My biggest beef is with the absolutely broken "Happiness" meter for your settlements. If I build an absolutely fantastic settlement that satisfies all of the requirements (fresh purified water, lots of food, energy, build all the shop types, have tons of defense etc etc) the meter seems to max out at around 82-85 or so. But if I have just 3 people in my settlement, and missing of the amenities and extras, it will hit 100 happiness extremely quickly? ** This was linked to the trophy as well; its nearly impossible to get the happiness into the 90's doing what you're SUPPOSED to do, but to pop the trophy, you basically just exploit a numbers game and get to "maximum happiness" with only 1 or 2 people in a bare-bones settlement.

Happiness is definitely broken. I can build identical Settlements, side by side, same number of settlers, all got a job, every amenity available, one has 80-82 happiness, the other has 60-62. I haven't seen 100 happiness in years.

I came to understand that the size limit is Bethesda's way to protect the game itself from crashing. The game is already huge, so they have to set a limit for us to tinker the settlements. BUT, what stupid is, they couldve given us choices to destroy buildings or clean up trash etc so we can create settlement the way we want it. I finally get a PC FO4 and use mods for this reason alone. Best decision ever

Thank goodness for scrapping mods because skeletons being left alone in the vanilla game was a dumb choice by Bethesda that got on my nerves. I'd create an awesome wastelandish settlement and would have those still scattered about. I'm putting a ton of work into my settlement to build it up, why would I want a bunch of skeletons hanging around? I shouldn't have to move them out of the green zone and have them pile up _outside_ of my settlement, I should be able to scrap 'em along with every one of those bushes and brambles that are always in the way.

The settlement building should have a crate for gear you want the settlers to use. Just throw weapons, apparel and ammo in the crate and eventually they will equip it. I'm sick of talking to every settler and giving them combat armour.

+Daniel Liddcoat actually that's exactly how average containers work. you don't need a special crate, but just a random crate and settlers under attack being near to it will automatically equip themselves with weapons and ammo, if it's better than the stuff they have. they even take weapons from the attacker's corpses. *but* the question is, what counts as 'better weapon'. you have to keep in mind, that unlike your player char the settlers don't have perks to increase their accuracy, damage and so on. so, it might be possible, that they don't choose a high-end-sniper-rifle, because their accuracy is just shitty and pick a double-barreled shotgun instead (because with a shotgun accuracy doesn't matter that much). so, what seems to be 'better' in your inventory isn't necessarily 'better' for the settlers. *and* this also means, that you have to be careful with storing stuff, that you don't want them to have (like unique weapons or weapons with area effect, that might kill their fellow settlers) too near to the places, where settlers go.

This happened to me outside Cabot House. Got the quest from Edward, walked outside and immediately got blown up. I attempted several times to fight my way through it using jet/vats/anything I could think of, but no - just died, and even if I survived I'd still have the giant robot thing aggro'd to me as well (and then respawn at the autosave just as I walked out the house). No option but to load earlier and go through all the dialogue again to regain the quest.

NightingaleD The Red Dogmeat's a dog. Firstly and lastly. Dogmeat can't hold an intelligent conversation, doesn't have that tall, dark, robotic, digital film-Noire swag and style and doesn't have high brains and intelligence like Nick. Dogmeat doesn't even have a kick-ass backstory and he didn't even get his own DLC. Nick also has a witty and sarcastic charm to him that mirrors mine and he quotes classical musical references and literature. Nick has beautiful eyes. Not only that, he is good-aligned, has a good heart and strives to help others and do the right thing without taking too much credit or extra rewards.... but he's not afraid to do a little dirty work or tell people what he thinks. He always demonstrates manners and tact too. Simply put, if this guy were real and I weren't already taken, I'd be all over him. I wouldn't give two nilly fucks if he was a gen 2.5 synth. I'd make it work. Call it what you will, I gots a soft spot for robots, cyborgs and androids, okay? I blame Alphie 2, Beast Wars, Reboot, Terminator and every other robot toy and game I had as a young girl. Not only that, I don't like traveling with Dogmeat and he blocks doorways and is not an effective sneaker, gets in the line of fire and needs Stimpaks like every three minutes. Dogmeat's only good for the Kellogg mission and even then, once you've played the game more than once, you can just go to the Fort where he's hiding at. O, did I mention that he's a DOG?

i figured out the reason for the minute men on my first ever play through. I made it to the institute with the railroad, then destroyed the with BOS. i decided that the institute was cool and followed their missions for a while till it became apparent they were dicks. i shot at a few scientists and made my escape. now who is there to destroy the institute? the minutemen. whatever you do you cant make them hate you.

Well I know you commented this a year ago and probably don’t play Fallout 4 anymore but if you still do there are plenty of mods that are great for taking out buildings, I believe it’s called “Scrap Everything” though I could be wrong. A little buggy and very touchy but I managed to make my settlements look spectacular.

I make do with the terrain in place and the structures that can't be removed. The game is about survival not beautifying the Commonwealth. Even the NPCs with jobs consider themself part timers. The Settlers damn sure aren't doing any work cleaning the place up and I just built them a Settlement, I ain't their mama.

1. Companions commenting/complaining about you picking up junk. *grabs military grade duct tape* "You might want to focus on the valuable stuff." 2. Having to install a mod to fix a glitch that prevents you from playing entire faction quest lines, which then disables trophies/acheivements. Yeah, thanks Bethesda. My biggest annoyance with Fallout 4 is that certain big events later on in the game don't affect the characters it should affect. What I mean is, for example when you finally find your son, why can't you tell Piper, who's probably super interested in the story? Why can't you tell Nick Valentine, who you hired to find your son in the first place? Why can't you even tell Codsworth, the only one besides you who remembers Shaun? Finding your son is the big motivator of the main quest, so it just makes no sense that you wouldn't share the news with anyone. It's really immersion-breaking for me.

you can use the small concrete wall and put it next to your structure and hold left click/x/A and then you can sink it a bit if you dont want to use foundations. You can even use this technique if your guard post is floating a bit

Yeah, the settlement building in the vanilla game is near-unplayable because of that. If you're playing on PC though, the mod 'Place Everywhere' is a great solution. You can overlap things (like junk fences, which actually makes them useful and not THE WORST), sink stuff into the ground and rotate items on X, Y and Z axes.

I’ll admit, I am a clean freak. It bothers me so much that you can’t pick up trash in your settlement, it bothers me so much. I really wish you could use the workshop for example in the storm bunker in sanctuary. Or the basement of the mansion on that island. It would’ve been really cool. They also missed out on so many likable characters that could’ve been companions, like billy and Shawn. I wish you could also travel with a group of minutemen. I hate the automated exits (ex: diamond city to the fens, ect.) When I get into gunfights and I accidentally walk through them and it either crashes my game or causes some glitch I also just can’t stand how incomplete the game is... the 4th installment was going to be “the one” and it is considerably revolutionary as far as graphics and mechanics go, but the fact that not only is it still extremely buggy, but the story is gappy too... in both fallout 3 and new Vegas the story consists of making life in the wasteland better/safer, and fallout nv had the best storyline of them all... but in fallout 4 its focused mainly on “synth equality”.... each faction bases all of its’ work on how it views synths, idk it’s just annoying

Great news for number 4! There is a mod called Sim Settlements that completely overhauls the settlement process! It allows your settlers to build on their own, and create structures that actually look really cool. You can set it to be completely automatic, so they just build and you don't have to do anything, or you can layout the general structure for the town and where things go and they'll take care of everything else, including little details with clutter and other items. I'd really recommend it, it's how Bethesda should have made the settlement process to start off with. Kinggath, the creator, has a KZbin channel going through everything about the mod if you're curious.

Companions: They always hinder your attempts to farm your crops! And when in areas where there are booby traps (trip wires, grenade clusters) they try to obstruct your view. And I think: Maybe my companion is a synth... I sure want to shoot it and find out! Settlement attacks: After you defend a settlement, you can't use the trader - you have to go elsewhere, because you get the ' sure glad you helped' dialog from every settler.

The thing that irks me about Fallout 4 is that quest where we have to follow Dogmeat after he sniffs Kellog's cigar. And he will travel for miles and miles AND WILL FIND THE GUY! I mean, this is the kind of plot I expect from Bingo, or maybe Lassie. Not a post-apocalyptic game. And BTW, it doesn't matter if you ignored Dogmeat or not. Even though I didn't even MEET "him" in my game, when this quest was there, it was kinda unchanged: There was Dogmeat, and I had to use him to complete the quest. ¬¬

The best way to play is immediately save Preston. Kill everyone at all the settlements he sends you to rapidly finish all the quests. Take the castle finish the castles quests. Build a wall around a bed and some corn and water in Murk water construction site. Give Preston children of atom rags and a board. Spawn a horde of death claws in the walled area with Preston and leave him there for all eternity.

The fucking dialogue system. Or should I say, "Pick your 'Yes'" system. Never mind the intricate dialogue paths of Fallout 2. Never mind alternate dialogue choices based on your skills and perks from Fallout 3 and New Vegas. None of that. 1-whenever you attack bloodbugs, they sometimes retreat to the point of no return 2-when in the glowing sea, sometimes youll see a group of mole rats bunched up together, not moving a muscle, and staring in one direction as if they were synths. but activate to attack once you get about 5 meters close to this random event. 3.Companions(especially Piper and Dogmeat) get stuck on literally nothing and whenever they attempt to follow you while stuck, its as if they are on an invisible treadmill 4.Preston 5.When on the Prydwen vertibird hangar, sometimes youll see flying vertibirds flying right through the docked vertibirds and Prydwen which disturbs me. 6.Random people talking to me while im talking to somebody else 7.After claiming the Castle(Fort Independence), youll get a quest from Preston G. about reclaiming the Fort's armory, after that, youll meet up with Ronnie Shaw,blah,blah,blah, and then she'll tell you to find another way in, so what the game does is it points to rubble and doesnt say anything else, because of that, it takes quite some time to figure out that your supposed to use the workbench to clear out the rubble.

it kind of really annoyed me that the BoS would give you the vertibird grenade things, but you aren't given the option to go in the sky and circle a certain place with the machine gun, this hands down would have made reclaiming the Castle so much easier and more fun. Also it'd be a cool solution to killing Swan.
