In this video I talk about 10 things I hate about the anime figure collecting hobby. I would like to say again that this video is for fun and is not made to be taken seriously. I love this hobby and I really hope that was still relayed in the video.

Btw to everyone here, you should not care what other people think about your figure collection. Those people in your life who truly care will be by your side. You should be free to decorate your room/apartment/home with all the cool stuff you like! Be yourself. You don’t have to explain yourself to anyone for having a hobby you enjoy. Trust me my apartment will have Persona figures everywhere along with some Spider-Man/Batman stuff and my PlayStation consoles too!

Well, DC and Marvel comics are understandable to most people. It’s usually with anime that gets judged, but I agree with your point. It’s not the worst nor the best, but we love to collect for fun so don’t get discouraged with others saying otherwise. Especially within the community when you can’t decide on a figure you like when others are down grading it.

Tbh I wont judge soheone no matter how weird his hobby is. As long as he is humble, professional about it and knows when to bring up this topic or not. I dont like it when they tell everybody and become obnoxious. Thats mostly kids sand teens. But if youre 25 and still behave like this then Im sorry mate but you need to grow up or get social social skills. Social skills thats the thing. Most big nerds and collectors or you know people like these have poor social or communication skills. If you do have decent skills then I can talk and respect you even if your hobby is somethign very strange to me. This doesnt apply to anime figurines but rather any kbscure hobby in the eyes of the masses.

I had 2 broken figures I had to super glue. My Omegamon G.E.M. Statue, and my 1/7 scale Purple Heart figure. I had to glue the toe and effects part on the foot of Omegamon, and I had to glue diamond piece on the hip processor, the clear rods on the ankle and head processors, AND widen the hole on the head. It was so frustrating!

Really agree with the first point. That one is so annoying cause it also makes the male characters not get figures often, particularly with anime that aren't the most popular ones. Kinda annoying cause all of my figures are girls and as much as I love them, I like the male characters too lol. Makes me look kinda sus to other people aswell XD

they don't release enough MALES characters figure, For example... Re:zero, too many REM, not enough Subaru. Konosuba.. too many Megumin , but not enough Kazuma... what they really need to release is a OTTO SUWEN scale figure - best boy lol

I think it just comes down to how the character designs for characters like Subaru and Kazuma aren’t as interesting or unique as the female ones. Even then we rarely see male figures tho which is a real shame.

I nearly had a heart attack yesterday when my brother slammed the door to the toilet next to my room and my Senku (Dr. Stone) and Yuki (Fruits Basket) figures went flying. Luckily, nothing was broken, which I am eternally grateful for.

One nitpick for me is when you recently get into an older anime and fall in love with it so the figures will most likely be after market price. For example I got into Kill La Kill really late just recently a year ago and the figures are really crazy expensive. Only have one beach waifu Ryuko figurine and wish I could get more but the prices are steep lol

I've never actually heard anybody talk about how isolating this hobby is. I've always seen in figure collecting videos talk about how expensive and space-consuming it is (WHICH IT 1000% IS!!), but yea I've never seen anybody mention just how lonely of a hobby this is! I absolutely love my figures and I'm so happy I was able to get them, but not being able to share your passion with someone else really is lonely.. at least for me, I either have people look at me with disdain, remain a semi-neutral stance (i.e. don't give a crap haha), or they're mad jealous of me because I decided to drop hundreds of dollars on figures, while they don't. But you know, do what makes you happy :D!! Maybe one day we can find a kindred spirit, and even if not, even with the MANY cons of figure collecting lol, I can't see myself stop in the near future xD! I just love being able to grab some VERY WELL-MADE merch of my favourite anime/manga/game characters!

I am very fortunate that I have a parent who is very supportive of my figure collecting. My mom loves to come visit with me in my collection room and often admires my figures. I keep them secret from my dad though as I believe he would encourage me to sell them. Sometimes I worry that my mom sees them as a waste of money, but when I brought it up, she said she doesn't care. She said so long as I can afford them and still pay my bills, I can buy whatever I want with my earnings.

Great video, love hearing your perspective. The reason your total is higher when you go to check out in a foreign currency is that your bank is charging you a conversion spread and possibly a conversion fee. The spread is the difference between the actual conversion rate at that moment and the rate your bank is offering you at that moment, and sometimes there's a %-based fee they charge you on top of that. It's kind of sucky the way they hide that in your transaction, I feel you.

I respect your opinion with number 1 and I understand this is for fun, but some of us find an interest with collecting figures for a sole character...and so I’m glad I get to see more Rem figures every so often, but I do understand the frustration with some characters not getting as much love as her. Tbh, I myself am a little frustrated to see negative feedback on the over abundance of Rem figures while Hatsune Miku figures are not getting the same treatment. Also, it’s a little hard as a starter collector getting judged by family and friends about my hobby choice. It hurts my soul when a figure arrives and my dad tells me my “toy” is here 😓

I have to admit, I find myself sighing whenever I see a new Rem figure up for pre-order. However I'd also admit I do find each and every new release to be pretty cool. I find there to be an over abundance of Fate Grand Order as well as Rem figures. There's no short supply of either. But I do see it your way, if you are into a single character then I understand the appeal. Oh and as for your dad, he must understand these aren't toys! They are collectible figures darn it! Haha!

my first figure was of yukako yamagishi and when i finally got her in the mail, i was so excited to display her until i realised that her feet didn’t fit into the feet slots of her base... the box was new and unopened and i panic messaged the seller i bought her from. because she’s pvc, he told me to heat her up with a hairdryer and bend her feet into place... SUFFICE IT TO SAY, IT WAS A VERY STRESSFUL FIRST FIGURE EXPERIENCE... thought i would break her in the process

One example of something that bugs me is with Vocaloids, they've released a crap ton of Hatsune Miku figures, yet barely any Rin, Len, Luka, Maiko, Kaito, and Gumi figures. I already have 7 Miku figures(as of this reply), so I don't need any more of her. Yet I can't find any Rin or Len figures.

All of this!!! Especially dropping or breaking. I had just unpacked my Kurama statue from YuYu Hakusho....his leg broke when i put him in his stand....I repaired him thankfully as it was a clean break. I also dropped my Tales statue of Mikleo...his arm sheared. Thankfully, the break again was clean. I was so upset when I dropped him! Thankfully, I live with my best friend who also collects so out hobbies mesh but, I have had people at work belittling my hobby as it isn't 'grown up' and 'you still buying toys?' they are not toys and my collecting makes me very happy. I like those new standard size nendoroid boxes. You can stack them easily and they look very nice. But all other boxes from scale figures or older nendoroids or some DX versions are just a mess and I'm always trying to keep them out of the sight.

@@mistadrew7513 With good reason. Brittle, broken figures. Bad casts. An illogical stance to stick with the brittle PMMA/PVC-L as a construction material. They look pretty, but if you want to ship them, they might as well be made out of glass.

The long story short is that they have a history of brittle, broken figures, bad casts and an illogical stance to stick with the brittle PMMA/PVC-L as a construction material. You're right, not many people have friends/family in their circles who are into figures, anime, manga, etc. I'm lucky enough to have a good amount of friends and family who openly enjoy this type of stuff, everyone on their own levels of course. None of my figures have broken yet(as of this reply), but if they do, I was thinking of using model kit adhesives like contact cement to fix them. But I can't confirm if they work, since I've only used them on Gunpla.

These are all pretty legit reasons. I started collecting a few years ago and I think the one thing I get annoyed about is the collection of boxes. I have a corner of figure boxes and some are stored in my suitcase.

Wow, you hit on so many things in this video. Just about every issue you touched on I was like, "YES!" Boxes is a HUGE issue for me. I hate to admit this but I actually started breaking down and throwing out my boxes. I know, blasphemy but I have, easily, well over a hundred figures (and I'm being generous with that number) and boxes pretty much filled my basement. It came down to me keeping my anime boxes or my quarter scale statue boxes and, well, the anime boxes lost out. Thankfully I have no intention of selling my figures so there's that. Figure assembly was another topic I understood. Figures that were a nightmare for me were: Kotobukiya's Attack on Titan Eren, Misaka, and Levi figures, Megahouse's Persona 4 Narukami figure and the Tales of Vesperia Yuri Lowell by Alter. By the end of dealing with these figures I found myself gluing pieces together which, I know, is a huge no-no. Kinda goes into your topic of figures breaking. But with all the things we hate, there are a million things to love so, in the end, it's all worth it. :)

I was watching one collector who has made a point of creating storage space under each display shelf. It keeps everything up higher off the floor and they keep all the boxes directly under the shelf - also solves the "where to store parts" problem as the boxes are easily accessible

i always keep the spare parts in the boxes, once i get a figure they get assembled and put into their detolfs and they'll stay there until i need to dust the shelves. i never need the spare parts so they're safest in their original boxes

Thank you for the video, its nice to hear some issues that even I share being expressed. I started this year and I have no one to talk to about this new hobby of mine. I brought it up at work once and was treared as if I was some disgusting troll under a bridge. I feel ya about the figure repair!!! I have a set of Akeno and Rias from High School DxD... they are polystone figures from Amie-Grand... Akeno just has a few strands of hair and part of her red ribbon that broke . But Rias came SHATTERED!!! Both legs were broken at the boot joints, her head was snapped off at the neck causing half a dozen major breaks to her hair as well as several minor breaks plus the front sculpt of her bangs snapped off. And with all the snapping and moving she has scarlet paint transfers on her face arms and shoulders. And several bits of frill from her lingerie were also chipped off... I couldn't ignore her damage so I have been repairing her slowly... it is a long careful project.

I was assembling a k-on figure, and i broke the peg on the foot. I rushed downstairs at 1 AM. I was being super quiet while searching for gorilla glue. i fixed her, but you shouldn't look too close because it is very noticeable lol

As a Gunpla builder I can totally relate with stuff like Nendoroid Easel Stands! I've spent over $300 on something as simple as Gunpla Action Bases that can hold my Gunpla properly and let alone they take around 7-10 minutes to build if you memorize each step to build an action base!

I like Re: Zero, but I'm so over seeing a new version of Rem coming out every other day, I can only imagine if they even had 1 or 2 more employees working on other characters .. we'd have so much more variety lol. That's true. Of course I have Rem and Ram figures but I'm very missing some of my favorite characters from not so well known shows. For example I really like The Dropkick on my devil! anime and they released only Jashin-chan nendoroid and nothing else. I still hope that they will make at least Yurine too.

Plus posting and customs it is sometimes a really high price. But I'm using that only for my most wanted figures so it's not so often.

As a new collector, the broken figures being resold isn't that bad to me. Mainly due to the one I bought broken being Cordelia from Fire Emblem, who resells for nearly $300-$500 these days, who was my grail figure. She was originally missing the end of her lance and the staff was bent, but considering she was only $100, I jumped on her. The staff I could use heat to rebend, and while the missing piece bothered me, I was just happy to have her since I don't plan to resell her anytime soon, if at all. (The seller did find the missing piece, and I fixed her up and she looks good as new btw!!!) So owning a broken figure I'm sure would annoy anyone, but fixing up a figure so dear to my heart with all the care and love, and at an amazing deal, was actually seriously rewarding! My first broken figure experience was positive, so maybe this is why owning a damaged figure isn't such a big deal to me, just depends on the situation I guess :)

She popped up randomly one day on the Mercari app and I snatched her up. Definitely worth the wait, I hope she comes home to you soon! A lot of what you described ring true for me too. Especially the bit of how some manga/anime have less figures - eg not a Fate or Re:Zero fan means not buying a lot of really intricately-designed figures, and having to make do with the limited number of characters of my fav anime with boring poses.

As an avid Bleach fan, it always pisses me off that there's barely any figures of say... Nelliel, Ulquiorra, or Grimmjow. So yeah, I can definitely relate to not being able to find figures of my favorite characters.

Point 6.. I recently got myself one of my grail figure Kaido One Piece WA-Max POP. The assembly of it or rather just the physical strength needed to lift it got me super nervous - especially hearing people breaking off parts of his moustache and the dragon head. I came to the realisation that I need to lift more weights to continue with this interest of mine. On the other hand, I see Point 1 as not so bad - if the characters I liked are in the minority, I think I won’t have the impulse to try to own all of them or have a hard time thinking which I should own and not. I can imagine people who love Rem and Ram having massive headache with almost one releasing every other month - I.e Derick of DTTC channel 😂

yay, really valid points! and thanks for pointing to these articles on SolarisJapan. btw you could save considerable amount of money if you looked into options of Canadian banks offering "online exchange office". you get a separate card and you can buy any amount and any currency you want e.g. 10 000 yen and it's stored on your account until you use it. you don't pay for additional currency conversion. it can be even easier with Revolut where you can buy any currency and it will convert to the one you need to pay with automatically without additional fees. unfortunately it's unavailable in Canada, but it's gonna be soon. all of this only if you want to ;)

Personally not many of these problems happen to me since I collect sh figuarts but every now and then I end up dropping one of my figures or having to explain it to my family and friends why it’s a fun hobby and not just a waste of time and money

I was trying to set up my Kirika figure from Symphogear GX and accidentally broke one of the little pieces off her back while trying to get part of her outfit attached. Luckily I was able to use some plastic glue to fix it (you can't even tell it broke off), but I was mad for a hot minute because that figure was like $220

I literally screamed when you talked about Fairy Tail. I recetly made a list of figures that exist for this anime and most of them are just... haaaaa. I love Lucy, I really do, but I wish to see more characters. Like, there are literally 1 Yukino figure. And Juvia figure? She is so old I can't find it in stores, and the one lot I found on Japanese auction costs 1 000 $. I am NOT paying 1 000 $ for a basic Juvia figure. I wish there were more of them. I wish there were Levi figures too. We have Gajeel & Wendy statues and no Gajeel & Levi statues and I find this unfair. There is one Juvia figure that gonna release sometime in the future but I think it's beach themed kinda 18+ figure so yeah. Pricing is hell. I try not to think about how much I spend when I order figures because it's always different and it's always hard to count 'cause of the differences in currencies. I should say I may be blabbering too much since I took my pills and I am now sleepy as hell. Ohhh, I remember how stressfull it was for me to assemble my Perona figure. First of all, her thigh was slightly bigger than the holder and now there is a line from that holder right on her striped thigh. And then we have her umbrella that STILL doesn't sit on the handle properly and slides off from time to time.

I actually recently pre-ordered the rerelease for Homura and Hikari (Pyra and Mythra), because I am not taking that risk of them costing 40k yen later down the road after they have come out. I believe they went for like 50-60k yen each before they announced the rereleases. (Also I just found out they have a rerelease this year in June, but I pre-ordered the ones for February 2023... just my luck)

Yesss I agree with everything! I luckily haven't dropped a figure yet but I also only really started to get into bigger figures this year and I am stressed about it lol. Also this is the most addicting and expensive hobby I ever got into and the amount of pre orders or figures I bought pre owned has my wallet crying. I am really lucky that my non weeb friends accept my hobbies and even let me teach them about it and seem actually interested in what I have to say! I have a friend who even takes cosplay pictures for me without any judgement.

I had this really bad accident with my Miku figure, was just looking at her without her on the stand, and then I dropped her, and the little part on her shoe bent, I was able to put it back into place, but the figure would wiggle and I was constantly readjusting her, Until one day, the little part decided to break, but super glue came to the rescue lol, I didn’t want to just throw the figure away because it’s expensive, and it was a birthday gift from my best friend.
