@vorong2ru
@vorong2ru 5 ай бұрын
the third off the price is nothing. One train ride from Birmingham to London (1hr journey) costs more than a German monthly train ticket. This is so unaffordable that I know people who have never been to London in their life living in the Midlands because it's that expensive to go there. This is a shocking third-world level of "poverty" to not being able to travel to the neighboring town. And I'm not even mentioning half of the country can't afford their heating bills and have to live in cold wet houses because if they do heat them up properly it would cost them 30%+ of their monthly salary to pay for electricity and gas.

@@stevetaylor8698 The second part. Your first point is partly due to the problem that "social" care is not included in the budget, but failings in that area impact on the NHS at greater cost. Cutting social care budgets is a false economy. Now to the major flaw in your argument. More is not being spent on a per capita or a GDP measure. You also have to look at the amount wasted on first, the internal market, and second, pissing about with tendering. Even more will be spaffed up the wall when the US insists on pharmaceuticals being included (in their favour) in any trade deal. You can forget QUALYS and NICE.

@ReallyBritishOne
@ReallyBritishOne 4 жыл бұрын
Even this to other countries looks crazy, as fares are typically a set price. Some train lines don't even let you advance book - Southeastern has set rates for its services. London to Dover can cost more than a flight to Canada or Morocco booked a week or two in advance.
@sergarlantyrell7847

It's basically how they can get away with charging extortionate rates, because they can claim that there *are* tickets available that poor people can afford. *If they can plan ahead. (Because last minute plans are a luxury, and there's a charge for that) **If the rich people who can plan ahead haven't already bought them. (Because planning in advance isn't, to the train company's surprise, limited to just poor people) ***If you are willing to travel at quiet times of the day. (Because poor people probably don't have proper, 9-5 jobs, else they wouldn't be poor)

@@ReallyBritishOne seriously ?
@ReallyBritishOne
@ReallyBritishOne 4 жыл бұрын
@@FrostedSeagull yep, fares in the UK for trains are ridiculous - I think statistically they're the most expensive in Europe, and third lowest for for customer satisfaction. Long-distance trips need to be booked in advance and the price variation can be wild. A trip to Scotland or Cornwall can cost hundreds of pounds per person, even one way. My personal best example - coming from London and traveling to Edinburgh. A one way train ticket booked three weeks in advance cost £58, and the journey time was six hours. That's without the cost of the connecting train I need to get through London to reach the Scotland-bound one - that is probably an extra £10-20 if you have to travel in rush hour. By comparison, a flight to do the same journey booked three weeks in advance, cost £17, with an hour journey time, and complimentary drink. Getting to the airport is cheaper than getting to the train station too, as you can avoid traveling through London. If I was rich, I'd choose the train for the sake of the environment, but as I'm poor, it's an easy guess which one I went for. For a further point of reference, a train from London to Dover will cost about £60. You can't get an advance discount on that, because the company that runs that particular train line doesn't offer that facility. I've seen flights to Casablanca and Vancouver for less.
@ReallyBritishOne
@ReallyBritishOne 4 жыл бұрын
@@sergarlantyrell7847 all of this. It also labours under the delusion that private companies owning train lines is a competitive industry that benefits the consumer. When you're on a train and the driver or conductor says over the intercom "thank you for choosing to travel with Southern™ trains" you're left with nothing but frustration. It's not as if you could have chosen Northern Rail, or Virgin Trains instead when they don't operate on the same route, or even in your region of the country. The entire system is farcical and exploitative. There's not one like it in Europe... railways tend to either scrimp on quality or charge an extortion for luxury. The UK, quite uniquely, charges an extortion for trash.

Using imperial or metric depends on what you're measuring for instance your height is inches while measuring the length of something is done in metres while distance is done in miles. Weight is done in pounds for living things but grams for ingredients.
@merrygoblin
@merrygoblin 4 жыл бұрын
Think it might depend on what generation are you. Speaking as a Generation X, I personally "think" in terms of inches for short length (cm are more accurate and I measure in cm or mm where necessary for accuracy, but when I'm forced to guesstimate a short length I think in inches as cm are individually too small to mentally picture). I know my weight in kg, but wouldn't know a pound or stone if it came up and bit me in the you-know-where (and kg are easy to imagine, its a bag of sugar!). I think of fluid amounts generally in litres - as 1000ml = 1000cm3, or the volume of a 10x10x10cm cube, it's fairly easy to mentally picture - not sure I'd actually know how much of something a gallon was. But of course our roads signs and speed limits are in miles and mph, probably because successive governments over decades haven't wanted to make the commitment to change all the road signs. And fuel efficiency is still usually quoted here in mpg for some reason (rather than the L/100km they measure in Europe), maybe just to go with the miles thing?
@turnerthemanc
@turnerthemanc 4 жыл бұрын
Measurements are all over the place in UK. Must be totally confusing to foreigners. Cars do miles per gallon, but no one knows what a gallon costs because its sold in litres. Beer in pubs is in pints. Beer in cans is ml's. TV's are in inches. (42" TV) I describe really small things in mm, but when it gets a bit bigger, I switch to inches (that starts at about half an inch). I weigh 16 stone 11lb. My dog weighs 14kg (Only humans are measures in Stones)

Wills Womble No, I lived in the West Country for a long time, and it's definitely relative. The salaries are appalling and because you need a car to get around, it means you often have to run two cars because yourself and your partner work in completely different towns and it becomes very expensive. Having no money in the countryside was a lot more depressing than having very little spare in the city, where I can walk two minutes from my front door to find shops and cafes and plenty to do. And I live in a very village-like London suburb, away from the centre, so it does not feel at all like the city and there are lots of fields and places to walk so I have the best of all worlds.

Two bits of advice..... Trains.... use something called "Split-ticketing" (I used to work for East Mids Trains, so know a few tricks), with the Raileasy site automating the task for you raileasy.trainsplit.com/...... try to book a min of 2 weeks in advance for best prices, and DO NOT use any 3rd party booking sites like The Trainline, Red Spotted Hankey etc, as they don't always offer the best fares, or limit availability of some ticket types (If Raileasy is not an option, go direct to the Train Operating Company in question, for a more fair deal..... if unsure of what operator, a Google Maps search for your Journey will often tell you). Avanti West Coast, operate the Manchester services from Euston (Was Virgin). Noise at night, you may notice that trucks, buses etc which have those reversing beacon sounds, are not permitted to have those activated between the hrs of 11pm / 7am in some places.... Excessive noise from a property also comes under this same law, with exception to emergency works, with said works kept to a minimum to complete the emergency task. If applicable, your Landlord may have regulations, which extend beyond these times, so worth checking out if required.

Average speed cameras do t flash. They have infrared cameras, they light up the number plate on the car and computers read and record the car registration, if they see that registration pass between the cameras too quickly then a fine is issued. The cameras on the motorways especially the M25 are normally smart cameras that will adjust to the speed of the motorway signs. If you’re seeing a flash then someone is speeding. On the motorways the cameras are very clever at picking out the car in multiple lanes that was speeding.

I would call the building Management Company to make a formal complaint and also phone the council. Different councils will respond differently depending on their resources (some will response the same night, others will take 2 weeks before they will give you a call to enquire what your complaint was about), but you definitely should call both. This didn't go down well with some people and she didn't seem to want to learn from her mistakes. Then when the self pity started people turned away. Catherine has never behaved in that fashion so has not attracted such criticism. Meghan seemed to think her californian style of doing things was going to sweep everyone up with her, not realising that the average British person views a lot of that as risible tosh. this distance would cost you £10 round trip pretty much anywhere in western europe and yet you're proud it only costs £92 pounds? No wonder they rip you off that much as you don't even care. The referendum was the public Vs the establishment. It took nearly 4 years for the will of the people to prevail as the establishment refused to accept the result. Also as can be seen, majority governments make for strong governments. If we don’t like them we vote them out. Finally National Insurance contributions means you are also paying in to get a state pension but you will need a minimum of 10 years to hit the lowest threshold.

I think it's probably fine if you're doing a single route with one service provider, but actually works out better for the customer if you have to use multiple train services. I think in those situations, trainline.com for example must have certain deals with the different companies.

Another great video. Keep up the good work. Speed cameras were installed many years ago supposedly to reduce accidents but it soon became apparent that they are to generate revenue. Some sat navs have the speed cameras locations in their software and they work pretty well. Best to just not speed (I drive like an old women). Parking:- We chose our house mostly because it has off road parking. Not going to get political here but its silly stuff like parking and dozens of other things which made people vote for Brexit. Far too many people on a small island. Everyone wants to live in the UK. Don't take that the wrong way. We love you and your husband and you're both very welcome here.

Yes trains can be expensive. But never buy a ticket inter city on the day, if you buy in advance lot cheaper but only for that train. You have to be on that train, don't miss it. There are some bargains about, for example going Newcastle-Gourock tomorrow (about 4 hour journey) and back for £40. Yes with a senior railcard so that would be £60 for you. I have even been known t go 1st class if the tickets are cheap, on LNER they actually give you a meal, can make sense. Free Coffee too, much as you want. The other thing is you can split the journey without coming off the train. If you are going London -Glasgow, try splitting at Preston. You may have to come off the train, or not as the case may be. If you do make sure you have 30 mins to spare just in case. For London-Manchester, you may want to try London-Crewe on London North Western railway. Takes longer, you want cheap though unbeatable. For example on Tuesday 11th Feb (just checked), you can buy a single to Crewe for £9 still available. From Crewe i'm sure you can get a reasonable fare. Personally now, I always book LNER for any ticket anywhere. They most often send the ticket to your mobile or they will PDF it to Email. So no more losing tickets like I did once with no refund. However, the bugbear is that Virgin East Coast changed the site so can't book up bikes now on the LNER site. Thanks Richard. And then Richard gave up on the east coast trains. If you want to book bikes, my suggestion is Trans Penine express or great western as you can book the bike at the same time as the ticket. Don't ever book trainline, there is a booking fee. Why do that?
@vorong2ru

and what if i can't plan in advance and happen to want to go for an evening out to the neighboring town? Why does it cost more than a flight to Spain considering the train isn't even full? And why when I book in advance I still pay 5 times the price of a similar distance train ride in France or Germany? Why are you justifying this bs? £60 is 5% of the average salary in the UK after tax per month. We have to pay 5% of our salary just to buy in advance a ticket to the neighboring town? This is an unheard level of unaffordability.

As a fellow Brit (you're British now), the housing prices and train fares are definitely the worst parts of living in Britain. I moved to London from the South of England to shorten my commute to work which cost me £404 a month and 4hrs of my day. Not one part of me regrets the move as I can now walk to work, but I also pay £750 pm for a double room in a shared house... London... 😂😅

Agree, mostly. We had a referendum on the single transferable vote, but we said no. Media were generally against and misrepresented it. Media is crap as stated. Metric vs imperial we use both, generally for different things, went to metric unless there was a good excuse not to. House prices and thus rents crazy, partly due to foreign investors and a system which has rewarded owning empty properties.. Travel costs are awful, loads of history, Beeching, European rules on subsidises, privatisation... basically government takes the position railways need to make a profit, but road don't.

On metric imperial, I don't know why you're confused. We use miles for distance and speed (unless you set up your GPS differently) and grammes and litres for loose measured quantities. Pre-package stuff (eg milk) is still done in Pints, but the amount in litres is always shown if it bothers you. In any case, the actual amount isn't usually that important as you can see the quantity you're buying.

Regarding the late night work you should complain to the local council. Do not call the police it nothing to do with them unless there is likely to be a fight. People can only carry out work late at night if they have good reason, it is very unlikely that these people had a reason. If you have a reason , such as using a crane to lift in an air conditioning unit etc that can not be done in the day, then you have to get permission from the local council. So you should phone the council at the time if they do it again. They will come around and stop the work.
