I got accepted to both UC Berkeley and UCLA and I'm currently trying to decide the two. Trust me when I tell you I've been eating up these videos UPS. I dreamt of being at Berkeley since I began community college, and when I found out I got accepted I've been experiencing this imposter syndrome and now fear is holding me back from going to the school I dreamt about. However, your video just brought me strength and for the first time I now truly believe that I belong there because I've been working HARD for it. Thank you! Hopefully, wherever I decided to go whether it's Cal or LA, I know I'm going to be the best version of myself and work through the challenges.

I graduated Berkeley almost 20 years ago with a B.A. in Cognitive Science. The dotcom crash happened and it was very tough to get a job. I struggled throughout my 20s financially because I could not really establish a career. However, I was not as socially astute as you are so I do not think you will have as hard a time as I did in those years. But I feel that we need to prepare young people for the dark reality that can sometimes happen after college. The best thing I did in those college years was work 35 hrs/wk and finish college with several grand in surplus money instead of being in debt.

Hey Cindy! Thank you so much and you are so beautiful too! Also, I totally understand, I felt the exact same before I came here and you know, i'm not gonna lie I have very little support from my parents, and even sometimes today things can get a little overwhelming for me, but if it wasn't for my experiences at Cal, I wouldn't have the backbone to survive in the real world. I think that's the biggest difference from those who have a negative experience about Cal, because sure things weren't the easiest at times, however I didn't really have a choice to be sad about certain situation because I didn't have a home to visit or go back too, and I had to truly train my mind and thoughts to see every obstacle as an opportunity, and I promise life becomes a lot less intimidating that way. Sorry for the super long response lol.

Jyoti Swamy I greatly appreciate the long response! Thank you for opening up and talking about the not so happy side of things. It needs to be said. With that being said, I can definitely relate. But like you mentioned, it’s about training your mind. I find that truly inspiring and I thank you for being so brave. UC BERKELEY SENT ME MY LETTER OF ADMISSION!!! I knew (& my fiance) that this was my school because Is the place I didn't see myself in but is the best! Hey Jyoti, My name is Ariel. I live in Los Angeles and my goal is to transfer to UC Berkeley as a Sociology major! Do you have any advice for me?
@re-entrytransferstudentass38366 жыл бұрын
Hi! I'm a Sociology major too. I transferred in Spring 2017. For applying, I highly recommend visiting your college's Transfer Center and getting help with your application. Have multiple people look over it and give you advice on how to improve your personal statement. At my community college, there was a representative that visited our campus form UC Berkeley. I don't know if they have that down in LA, but I got advice from them. I also joined three different organizations to help me get into Cal like Experience Berkeley. In Experience Berkeley, they paired me up with a mentor and I visited Cal every so often to get help with my application. These programs have a high success rate of getting students into Cal. My academic experience: Sociology classes are mainly attending lecture, participating in class discussions, reading a lot from books and the readers, and writing essays. I would say you should try to get a study plan early on. I personally had to change my study style to accommodate the Cal academic rigor. I had to use the resources way more than I did in community college. I think the students that do the best give it their all, get to know their professors and ask questions in office hours and class, and actively seek out the resources they need. At Cal, I quickly learned that they aren't going to hold your hand to guide you through college, you have to get out there and take initiative or you are going to fall behind.
@jyotiswamysworld6 жыл бұрын
Hey Ariel, thank you so much for watching and the advice that I would give to you is don't give up, because you can do and be anything you want. I applied to UC Berkeley 3 times before the accepted me, and I wouldn't regret my choices for anything. Really think about the school before you choose, and don't settle for anything else, if it is what you truly want.

Berkeley is next to the hood! That’s # 1! You can get robbed. There’s constant campus announcements about it.
@jyotiswamysworld3 жыл бұрын
I grew up in the hood, but you can't let fear stop you from living and getting educated. Berkeley does offer a walking/protection program for those students who don't know how to navigate the streets, which I mentioned in my video. The program offers students to be shuttled or walked to their homes for free as long as they are Berkeley students.
@greatnesss87473 жыл бұрын
@@jyotiswamysworld Growing up in the hood doesn't prevent you from getting robbed. I did too. Being scared and knowledgeable are separate. I was just pointing out a pronounced abnormality that usually doesn't exist at other top tier institutions. Thanks for being so prompt in your response Jyoti!
@jyotiswamysworld3 жыл бұрын
@@greatnesss8747 Yes you are correct growing up in the hood doesn't prevent you from getting robbed (pretty obvious) and I wasn't implying that growing up in the hood prevents you from getting robbed, but there are resources that people can use to help prevent such situations, which I already stated in my video and in my reply. Many people have different reasons as to why they want to go to UC Berkeley specifically, therefore fear should not prevent people from stopping their goals/dreams, which in some instances include getting a degree from UC Berkeley, this is the sentiment that I was aiming to project.
