Most of the people who won't let you over are new here and haven't adjusted to our laid back attitude. Believe it or not there are low traffic areas, but everyone wants to live on the West and South West side of town. Most natives don't venture out 11a.m. to at least 2 p.m. Great to have you here. I'm definitely going to check out more of your videos.

I love this! I moved to Houston 8 months ago. I was staying in the Katy area and I had to drive to the north side everyday for work! That traffic killed me and people can not drive. I develop road rage when I moved down here. I am from Detroit, so traffic is not that bad as it is down here. The tolls...oh I am not paying tolls. Lol I turned that thing on when i first moved down here. This video was very informational.

@Zanda Williams it’s is very hard to find a good job or any job for that matter with a criminal background. The best advice I can give you is to go into business for yourself. Learn a new skill or a trade that way you can make your own income. Real estate investing, barbering, hairstyling, fashion styling, bartending, being a make up artist, these are just a few that come to mind.
@hddun
@hddun 4 жыл бұрын
@@LeeLivinLife Zanda, you should look at construction work. My Dad had a construction company and those people are real forgiving--my Dad had several African American men and some with criminal backgrounds--he didn't care if they wanted to work. The work can be hard but the money is BIG. I suggest go to a local Electricians Union office and get into there Certification program. A Union Electrician in Houston makes about $20 an hour starting pay. Welders do well to but you have to go to a trade school. Many of these schools are part of the governments re-training and you will get paid to train.
@hddun
@hddun 4 жыл бұрын
@Zanda Williams Zanda, I suggest you look for construction work. It pays good and they don't look too hard at a person's background. My Dad had a contruction company and hired ex-convicts. They were good employees and showed up regular. I suggest you research some Union programs for training. Many skills like welding are in such demand--they PAY YOU to train. And when you finish the training they can help with job hunting. There are lots of skilled jobs in Houston, there are huge construction projects going on in the Petro-Chemical complex on the eastside of downtown. Houston is the world capital of chemical and refining plants so it takes a lot of welders, carpenters, electrician, fitters, etc. The pay for non-college guys is good because living costs around Houston are low. Example: Gas prices are about $1.70 per gallon. Apt rents start about $600 per month. Here is something I pulled for you for welders from the Baytown (20 miles east of Houston) job board: www.ziprecruiter.com/Salaries/Combo-Welder-Salary-in-Baytown,TX houston.altierus.edu/electrical-construction-technician Good luck. Keep your chin up. Everyone needs a fresh start--you can do this!! God Bless you my friend...
@hddun
@hddun 4 жыл бұрын
@Zanda Williams I would think so. Big construction jobs have several types of workers--skilled like electricians, book keepers who keep track of what is being shipped on to the site / they also keep the hours for the crews / common work (this can be pretty hard--around here there are a lot of common labor workers but seems many of them are Hispanic and kinda just show up here to work--if you get my drift. I would check into the Texas Workforce Commission which has training that will pay you while you do training. They have offices all over Houston. But what I know is most of the big projects are on the eastside of the metro area--real big like 5 year projects. If you are coming to Houston, I gotta tell you its a "car city" like LA. So if you don't drive, find the bus routes over the area. Or locate to the following surrounding cities: Channel View, Texas City, Baytown, Deer Park. All these places surround Houston and with a car they are about 45 min to an Hour in peak but only 35-45 min off peak traffic (we have a good freeway system). www.twc.texas.gov/

The parking thing is just in Midtown/Washington/Downtown. Otherwise Houston has super lax rules about parking. Parking in Montrose or river oaks isn't really ever a problem. And even in midtown and stuff you eventually find all the free places to park if you go out enough. Also I feel like with the whole getting over thing; having grown up driving in Houston, I think most drivers just expect you to be aggressive and just go for it like you said. I haven't really experienced drivers who actively refuse to let you over and cut you off like I have in other cities. Welcome to Houston, glad you like it!

Hi I am from the Missouri City (Mo. City), TX and have lived here my whole life 40 years! I agree with the comment below…native Houstonians like myself are not aggressive drivers. Native Houstonians will wave their hand to thank you for letting them merge on to the freeway. Houston’s population has grown drastically so I also believe that most of the impolite drivers are not from Texas or they are people whom are frustrated about the fact that traffic is getting horrible here over recent years.Houston is a driving city so if you can’t do traffic I agree that it is best to live close to your job if it’s possible…that has been my lifesaver for not putting many miles on my car. Good review!

Good luck Larry. I live near HCV. Very nice area. The lots in our neighborhood are amazing. I have several 30 ft tall trees and a greenbelt running along Buffalo Bayou. Biggest downer is that my property taxes have increased along with the housing prices in this area. You will like the winter here--I play golf weekly and there are dozens of courses so we get a variety. The green fees (if you golf) run about $30 to $60. I used to belong to a prime country club but after retiring, I don't need the amenities of that so I 'm now just playing all over Houston. But if you dont golf, there is tennis, sport fishing (when I moved here from Dallas, guys invited me to go out to deepwater fishing. I had never done that and its an experience!. Out about 5 miles the water is crystal clear. Enjoy we have much to do here besides work.

Anthony, the worst thing about H-Town is the summer heat--about 90-95 each day from June thru much of Sept. But winters are very nice. And ame$nities here are budget priced. If you plan to own a home you will find that a home that fits your budget unlike LA. No state income tax. Gasoline prices are about $1.70 to $1.90 per gallon. Auto fees I have a Lexus 2018 and its $80 for annual registration. Rentals run about $600 mo for a 400 sq. one BR to about $1200 mo for top drawer type apt. I golf every week. Local city courses charge less than $40 for a round. Lots of people here are young people from all over since the major employment is in Medical, sciences, and energy much of it in engineering.

@@AnthonyOTooleMusic Anthony, if you don't have a car, I suggest that when you come here to look for lodging inside of LOOP 610. Its the old Freeway loop around Houston. The best part of that is the West / Southwest areas. Going to east side gets a bit "seedy" -- its old industrial over there. For just walking and bicycles check out the area around Rice University. Its like a small college town in the middle of a big city. Its not real collegegiate in many ways--since its a small engineering oriented school its not about Frats and the social stuff of other small schools--its nerdy but in a good way. If you have already lined up a job, you may not have too much of an option. Like LA, cars dominate Houston commuting. The bus and rail transit are OK but nothing like the East Coast citie--I used to work in NY and was taken by the trains and subway systems up there. Hope that helps. Mainly if you are working here try to be close to where you will live or vice versa. If you are looking for work, the best opportunities here are in Medical, research in bio-medicai, and IT. Oil and Gas were good but the market crashed with the cuts to airlines and commuting as well as the move to EV's. Good Luck.

@@AnthonyOTooleMusic Anthony good choic for easy living in Houston. Montrose it smack in the middle of every thing and close to shopping, entertainment, bars, jobs (downtown is only 15 minutes by bus or Galleria about 15 minutes west by bus). You probably know its a Rainbow area so have an open mind. The culture in Houston is very open -- my view because its a seaport open to the world--several hundred thousand people here are Ex-Pats from all countries in the world. Makes for great food, great fun, and great friendship....
