It really depends on the industry and location. I worked in London for 2 companies. I have colleagues pressured and worked together till 3am in the office without overtime pay. Of course, they were frustrated and quit shortly after that. I have another project manager who races against time, liaises between our department and the client until 5 min before entering the boarding gate at Heathrow Airport. Imagine spending her annual leave this way, calling and emailing us with luggage? Leaving at 5pm is not really a thing in the media and advertising industry. People are going to be very jealous if you leave early like 5.30pm or 5.45pm. For the groceries aspect, I think it's pretty much expected that your international favourites are going to be way more expensive because we're importing them. Fresh produce (more so if it's organic) from such places like NZ, UK, USA have to be expedited at a higher cost. We're not an agricultural country even though there are farms. Just like how Asian spices/ produce will be more expensive in European countries. Also since you know that there are other varieties / cheaper options are available elsewhere, you can make the trip maybe twice a month to those places. I assume since the both of you are drawing an expatriate pay (or at least comparable to the locals) to be living the lifestyle that you have now, it is still acceptable to be shopping at cold storage for example.

Regarding work life balance, I think it stems from our education. If you ask any secondary student, you will realise that a lot of us are stressed and often do our homework during the weekends. It is, in my opinion, a serious matter, because even as a student, I cannot unwind and relax even if there is no work to do, because work outside and inside school is always on my mind, I constantly chase my fellow students for work and more. It will be a problem that will cause some adverse effects in the future I think, since the “always working” mode is engrained into us since young. Sadly, when I have no work to do, I feel strange, since I’m constantly trying to meet deadlines and chasing people, therefore I think this matter stems from young, and I agree it is something hard for a foreigner to adapt to

To be honest the 9-5 was something I never though existed - I work in London and none of my "proper" post-uni jobs (i.e. non-student supermarket jobs etc) have ever been a 9-5 fixed setup. People tend to start as and when they want in the morning from 8-9:30am, and are free to leave from 5ish onwards but frequently stay till 6 or 7 or even later (this is in an international US tech company). That said, I have heard there's a big gap between London and non-London expectations and work culture. For example, I know someone who used to work in London for a professional services firm in the City, then moved to Birmingham, and told me that whereas in London it was such high pressure and people stayed late quite often, in Birmingham it's more relaxed.

Unfortunately, due to COVID, she is working from home and can’t escape work 24/7/7days. Her employer has actually vacated all of their offices, so that that virtually the whole company is WFH. The won’t even be an office Christmas party, mainly due to there being no Office. I am rather glad that I am pretty much at the end of my innings, as I think that I have pretty much lived through the glory days of human society. I really feel for the younger generation. I feel like Rutger Hauer’s character in “Blade Runner”, and empathise greatly with his monologue. “ I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. The U.S. will get something done very quickly but it may not always be perfect the first time. Mexico will never get it done right the first time but will work all day and night to get it done (with many breaks in between). Asia tends to be very unassuming and will often defer to the U.S. or UK. They will get it done right the first time but will not be very quick about it. The EU is weird, it just depends on what country. Good luck getting something done in Germany or the UK. But, other countries, like Poland, have a very bright young crop of talent but they never stick around long (always looking for the next "better" job). Anyway, it's very interesting.

Sorry to hear about the inconsistent prices local SG businesses charge. The UK is experiencing various long term challenges.

a friend of mine was posted to the UK and he brought along his singaporean work ethic. he got threatened and he left the job that second. it might be a little bit hard to adjust and wanting things done asap, but you can do it!

I always use visa paywave cos of how convenient it is, just tap with my phone and payment's done 😂 Also pretty amused at how many people can drink directly from the tap in singapore, I know how clean our water is but I never ever do that cos I still think it tastes weird 😅

If u have a brother serving his national service especially during his first few mths, he will almost be drinking tap water everyday. Haha It's safe but taste weird to me still.

Working in the marketing/customer service sector, it's a MUST to reply almost instantly because customers get so upset if you don't reply within the hour and they'll accuse you of being rude and they'll make snide comments like "Don't you want my business? Looks like you don't." Well, I can't exactly say "Fuck off somewhere else." unless I'm Gordon Ramsay.

Hi I am Singaporean. Strawberries at 15 dollar, did u go to a japanese supermarket? NTUC n Sheng Xiong have a box of strawberries at ard 5 to 6 n when there is promo u can even get it at 4 plus.
@leeyokepeng22094 жыл бұрын
$15 is the bigger box one
@ebonyloveivory4 жыл бұрын
No, I think they're talking about those Driscoll ones for example. The ones imported from USA, UK...anywhere further away. Bigger boxes, organic & international fresh produce are expensive because of import taxes.

Well, I think the issue with the work culture is that your boss expects all this work to be done, and if you can't do it, they will just fire you and find someone who will...or promote those that make the "extra" effort.. so it's like our lifeline on the line...

agreed on the 3rd point. in the past it was so much better with gurmit singh and etc. radio though some are mixed of old and new but they are pretty repetitive and yes listening to a different radio is nice. one thing on safety is that its not 100% because some people actually do steal, commit murdrer, molest etc but thats a minority

You can listen to world wide radio via your handphone. Radio is dead!

But I don't think there is a place safer than Singapore. 100% safe city is close to impossibile and Singapore manage to get even close to that number. The fact is that you cannot mess around with such a punitive laws. Am I wrong?

I don't know what's the deal with American Express, but many places in the US also don't accept American Express...

our groceries have to cost a lot because we import so much, it’s a must since we’re such a tiny country and have nearly zero natural resources to grow our own produce and for the radio, if you want newer songs go for 98.7fm!! you’re probably listening to 95fm or 92fm which is for the middle aged folks. 987fm plays kpop and trending songs on a daily i use paywave/apple pay it’s just basically contactless payment with your debit/credit card. i use grabpay very often too because of the points :) paynow/paylah is a must to have because some places either accept these two or cash. so if you only have your phone on you you’re close to dead

Wow as a Singaporean, I have no idea that foreigner rate exist!!! Even as someone who works part time at restaurants... Also, everything is a competition in SG, even GETTING FOOD. Anyway, do try Park Bench Deli! Some really good grubs there! I personally use ShopBack, fave, grab card! Wherever there’s cashback! 😂

Thank you for the video! As an expat in the UK, I can surely say there's no 9/5 here for non locals. Expats here, especially in London, have to grind hard to bring some food on table and get on the property ladder. I'd say you just experience regular expat live they have in any country, it's not Singapore specific.
@paul_london3 жыл бұрын
Locals are just fine with 9/5 though, casually fleeing into cafes and restaurants even before 3pm.

I mainly use DBS live fresh credit card to get 5% cashback on everything visa paywave and online and OCBC frank card to get 6% cashback on everything Apple Pay and online. Dining I use Burpple to get 1 for 1 deals if I have to dine out. Entertainer app if you’re looking for both dining and 1 for 1 alcoholic beverages.

Singapore tap water has 10% recycled sewage water in it....New water or something like that.
@cocoapanda20014 жыл бұрын
Yes, but newater, the recycled sewage water, is too clean to drink;, it is devoid of minerals. So we pump newater back into our open reservoirs and the water then goes through the usual process of treatment before it comes out of our taps.

Cash will always be king for me! I don’t ever want to see it disappear to cards and tap/flash. Satisfying to have it in your hands, helps keep spending down instead of just tap tap tap 🤷🏻♂️
