10 Things Nobody Tells You About Minimalism & Decluttering
I started living a minimalist life before I even really knew what minimalism was all about. The idea of decluttering and purging things that didn't give me joy has been something I've been doing for years. It's only in the past few years I've had a name for it. So today I wanted to share ten common things that no-one seems to talk about in relation to minimalism. These aren't bad things but things that just seem to go hand in hand with living a minimalist lifestyle. So if you've been toying with the idea of decluttering your life or if you already live a minimalist life I hope this video gives you a heads up on what to expect or helps you feel less alone.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy it and thanks so mucg for watching.

People judge people buy their possessions. I am a minimalist and people think I am because I'm poor and can't afford lots of ornaments or I because I don't have 20 pairs of shoes etc. I was told recently that because I didn't have the latest iPhone it was because I was poor. I just smiled to myself and thought, I'm not poor I'm rich because I don't have these things i don't have credit either. Life is about finding your own path, not walking in the shadows of others.

I am not a minimalist as of yet, however I am working on it...I know how you feel about people think you're poor because you don't have the latest stuff. That is how some people feel about me. When I was buying this and that that is where my money was going to someone else making them rich now my money is going to me making me rich. Not rich with money, but rich with happiness, joy and peace...and on my way to being credit free. I now buy what I need.if I don't need I leave in the store.

I think people judge others to analyze their own actions. They are seeking to justify (to themselves) why they are, or are not, doing the same. This combined with hostility is evidence of their own internal struggle.

Thank you for this! I started my journey almost 6 years ago towards a minimal amount of things to be more frugal, budget minded and because I felt like I was drowning in stuff. I lived in 550 square feet with my husband because that's all we could afford and both had to much. Then I discovered the low waste movement and it all came together. Now I am almost at the point where I am content with what I have but I also am still purging a bit more. I just need to convince my family that instead of gifts we want experiences.

I'm letting go of the clutter in stages, it's been an ongoing process for over a year now. What I do struggle with are family items & things I have been given even if they don't serve me . Your comment about being judges resonated, I'm holding back because I don't want to be judged by or upset my family.
@Thestyleinsider.
@Thestyleinsider. 6 жыл бұрын
I'm pleased you could relate to my judgement comment because this one is bigger than a lot of people realise. My mother has been very upset with me over the years for donating and re-gifting items which is a real shame. She sees it as a lack of respect instead of my need to simplify my life. But I suppose the bottom line is not everyone will understand or be happy with your decisions but as long as you are that's really the most important thing. Enjoy your journey :)

Yes, I agree that family can be a huge problem with getting rid of things. Now that I'm old I say " I don't want stuff I'm a old lady". They would love me to house their memento's. Unfortunately my 90's plus Mother has always held her memento's as great value. So I understand how difficult they can make it. I am a firm believer in regifting what is given that isn't what you want but might serve someone else. Sale, give, donation, it's all good.

Linda M It did feel good when I got a letter from the charity I donated a lot of things to telling me how much my donated items have raised for them, inspiration to do a bit more. I'm trying to explain to Mum I am still keeping one or two really treasured items from each family member e.g, I'd never stop loving my grandma's engagement ring or sell that.

I couldn't agree more. As you said minimalism is different to everyone, to me it is about keeping items that serve and items that you love. Its not a competition to see who has the least amount of stuff and I do like seeing homes that are decorated with a bit of personality, some are so sterile but if that is what the person wants and loves thats fine, who are we to judge.

I agree. It's not a competition to see who can live like a monk/nun! It's about finding joy and balence in what you truely need-who really needs 2+weeks worth of clothing?! Things you never use?! Most of us just need 7days worth of outfits and a pair of around the house clothes

I’ve been slowly clearing all the spaces in my home & as soon as I’ve made a big dent I look back & can see I need to do more. Each time I go over it I feel better & better. I find it really hard letting things go. I feel almost like a hoarder but the chaos of so much stuff leaves me feeling unsettled & depressed. The thought of having to clean it & sort it & tidy constantly is draining. Especially with a child. I’ve found since emptying my bed room & only keeping what I need I feel so much lighter. I still have some sentimental items around but my space feels spacious now & I don’t feel like I’m squeezing into a room. I’m by no means finished & ive a long way to go till I’m happy with it. But I used to say my home doesn’t feel like home & filled it till it burst now I appreciate the clearer look & it’s so much easier for me to clean & takes less time & looks so much more pleasing to the eye.

When I first encountered minimalism lifestyle years ago, it honestly threw me off right away. One of the biggest things about minimalism is that it really is a way of thinking, as much as what you own/have. And if you live with other people you can only minimalize your own things. I'm so happy I ran across this video. After watching some other minimalist videos, I found them to be so impractical. The one I watched right before yours advocated to get rid of clothing items you haven't worn in 90 days with no thought given to seasonal items. I don't wear my heavy winter coat for 5-6 months out of the year, but I'm not getting rid of it after 90 days if it is still in good repair!

I moved from a warm sunny Arizona back to the Midwest. I made sure to keep my winter coat and a couple of sweaters I could rotate through. However if I don't use it after the years up(usually spring clean) I purge it. This winter I got a couple more sweater because I had forgotten how bitter cold it could be and the Arizona sweaters were to light weight.

I have watched tons of video's about minimalism do's and don't but minimalism is something you have to carve out for yourself for what fits your lifestyle. The most extreme I have come across was a man who could pack everything he owned into one backpack. His rented apartment was bare. I found it interesting but way too extreme for me.

Hi :) Your house is beautiful. Love the overall look and the light colors. I'm 70% decluttered, too many clothes, cosmetics and household cleaners left. The culprits for me: home decor taking up the flat surfaces I had 20 vases, glass blown figurines, souvenirs from airports, 200 magazines etc), indoor plants (dusting and changing the potting soil), fragrance things (candles + holders etc), curtains (3 or 4 spare ones in closet) and extra towels, table cloths, kitchen wear stuff. It's all out of my house now. I'm all about easier/faster cleaning and no time consuming useless items in my house.

Congratulations on your decluttering journey! I find that I only use 5 cleaning products : laundry detergent, dish soap, a soft scrub, multipurpose cleaner and peroxide. The multipurpose is for my flat surfaces :floors,walls, counter etc. The peroxide is for germs and the soft scrub for the toilet, tubs and sinks. I suspect you could just get away with the dish soap and peroxide but I cook with oils and fats so I prefer a bit more powerful cleaners . Hope this helps with your cleaner purge!

The Style Insider Well, I couldn't do it constantly, too overwhelmed: ''I will never be done'' thoughts and still keeping too much stuff the first couple of purges. It took about 2 months. I get called cheap all the time because I am a minimalist. I come from a very rich family and money was never a barrier in anything, but I like to live simple as it helps me be more productive in my personal work and business. I still own an iPhone 6S Plus, it is as good as new as I take ultimate care of my possessions and I find no reason to upgrade to any phone yet. I change my wardrobe every 2-3 years, mostly buying the same plain clothes because the old ones develops armpit discolouration. You don’t need to be poor or rich or “vegan” to be a minimalist. I am a huge seafood consumer and I love my occasional red meat and poultry, not stopping me from being who I want to be, eh?

Great points and so well-said especially point 2, speaking from personal experience , I come from a family of hoarders , they didn’t understand why I always say no to gifts they want to give to me( they especially think I am being picky and criticising their tastes 😞) they also don’t understand why I take pleasure in a simplified room and nagged me on it

Diane Wong Hoarders do always feel like they are being judged. Especially by tidy minimalists. When people ask what I want for gifts I try to explain that I'd rather be given experiences than "things." A gift card for a nice restaurant, or to the movies is always appreciated. Even a gift card for Lowe's or Home Depot is always welcome. (Something is always needing to be fixed or replaced if you're a home owner).

I am giving things away and throw stuff out a lot and it really feels good! But SOME of it gets replaced with things that make my life (or ours as a family) easier. So unused clutter leaves, and things that serve me come in. What stopped coming is "things that I want" because tomorrow I might want something else and the wanted item becomes clutter while making me feel bad vec it emptied my bank account.

The criticisms regarding the Minimalism journey/lifestyle joins the ever growing subject list. It’s truly disheartening. I began watching minimalist vlogs for encouragement and have found a few useful tips to help with my own journey. I don’t try to “mirror” what I watch. Let’s hope that soon the end will come regarding the “thumbs down” rating and the negative or hateful comments.

There IS a very definitive Minimalist lifestyle. It is stark and bare. Think Japanese. BUT, there is a more Modern Minimalist style. I think there is a specific name for it but I can't think of what it is. I have gravitated towards a more modern minimalist style. I like less "stuff". There is truth in "less is more". But for me, the true minimalist style is way too stark. And minimalism doesn't have to be white walls and everything. I don't know where that even came from. Minimalism uses white sure, but also earth tones. Color is used to calm or energize you. A bedroom would be of a more calming color where a living space could be more vibrant. Its just not busy or very overly bright and usually one does not need a whole lot of color. I heard once that minimalist only keep things that are useful and/or bring you true joy. It does take some time to declutter, I mean it can take months. But the free feeling you have when going through a store, you don't feel the pressure to buy everything that catches your eye. Not to mention, it's so much easier and cheaper and faster to clean and keep a more minimalist home and office. Thanks for your videos, they are inspiring. And lastly, what is that song playing in your background. I love it.

I really enjoyed your video. I've seen all kinds of levels on minimalism with some so extreme that one man could pack everything he owned in a backpack. His apartment was empty. Too extreme for me. My idea of it is to only keep what you truly love around you and declutter the rest. It does make life easier when your home is not jam packed with items. It's a lot easier to keep it clean when you don't have so much crap to dust around. My big weakness is hardback books. I have at least a couple hundred and when you own a 3000 square foot house it's easy to find a place to put them. But I don't need them all so I have been slowly weeding them out and taking what I don't want to the local Library. I figure let someone else enjoy them.

That first point is SO important. I love my physical books, CDs, and DVDs. No I don’t want to “go digital”. Doesn’t mean that I can’t adopt the minimalist approach. A big thing I’ve had to overcome is: it’s ok to just throw things out. I was raised not to waste stuff and getting rid of things was really difficult until I just gave myself permission to throw things out.

"Minimalism means ridding yourself of items that no longer serve you." I love this statement, thank you. Minimalism looks different for everyone, and I really dislike the judgmental attitude of some minimalists who try to tell other people they're not doing it right. I didn't seek out minimalism, I actually discovered it about myself. And it wasn't while I was decluttering, but when I was compulsively shopping. I realized how much I hate clutter and owning things that sit there and never get used or, if they're a non-functional item, don't even bring any joy. But it's always a journey and work in progress like you said, because that's just the nature of life, and that's perfectly fine.

Did you like your own comment?... I do not think it's hype. I reached an epiphany that I could no longer acquire more stuff because I ended with so much clutter that I started to become a hoarder. I've been giving stuff away and I never want to feel like I'm drowning in so many things, ever again. That awareness will keep me in check. It certainly isn't a hype that I bought into. Some people reach the realization that they are owned by their belongings instead of the other way around later in life. I'm glad I finally adopted a mentality of having less. I don't want to go back. Certainly not just a fad.

@@ignazs.5816 Ignaz S. Good for you! I will eat a whole cake if I manage to declutter my whole house for once in my life, and feel the enlightenment you are feeling right now. You have many reasons to stay on this track and I admire you for this. But everybody around me suddenly talks about minimalism? They have a totally clean and uncluttered house. Well, I was looking up organizing vids and came here. (BTW, in the 80's I thought hip hop was a hype too).

@@johnroekoek12345 I think many minimalists become extremists about it. I don't think of myself a minimalist, living out of a backpack. I only wanted to get rid of stuff so that I didn't have to spend my time on organizing and arranging things. Some just do it to make a statement. I did it for my peace of mind. I think some of us reach the age where we think that we've had it with having so much stuff, but yet can keep a balanced viewpoint about it, without being preachy or judgemental.

Indeed! And of the worst kind in its way ~ because it has in fact been around forever! (particularly since the Victorian era -- moving into the Edwardian was 'minimalist' to say the least, in comparison; just as the 'clean' Georgian style was from the earlier Rococo). It's a 'hype' that some people have just discovered, recently, so they think it's 'new' and 'trendy' and that they invented it ... no! Every minimalist generation has been superseded by one who wants 'more' (in whatever way they define the more), just as they in turn are replaced by one who wants less.

I agree with you. Minimalism has no standard. Everyone has their own opinion about minimalism. I used to live in very little stuff when i was little because of our family can't afford to buy unnecessary stuff. As I grew older i became more aware of what I have and bought. Since I get married I took minimalism lifestyle seriously. But I didn't get rid of anything or downsizing the entire house. My husband loves to read books and collects good books. He still can have them without feeling its too much. Because having to have those books make him happy and bring him relaxation.
