I think the stereotype of having no humor comes also from the cultural and the language barrier. Not all jokes makes sense when you don't have a background information and translation makes the jokes often unfunny. Germany has a great culture of politcal cabaret but it makes no sense of translating this for people who think that Adolf Hitler is the president of Germany.

Germans with no humour. Hmm. I don't believe that the language barrier is part of it to any great extent. Obviously, attempting to translate one of Helmut Kohl's famous gaffes, like: "Wichtig ist, was hinten rauskommt" can present you with difficulties in achieving the same level of humour, but that's also true of some English humour; for instance: "Incest is relatively boring". The perceived lack of humour in Germany is, in my opinion, much more of a cultural misunderstanding. Whereas in English-speaking countries, folks encountering each other for the first time tend to shake hands and smile, and maybe slip in a joke or two, that doesn't happen very often in Germany (this actually applies more to West Germany than the former GDR - where I lived for many years). (West) Germans are paranoically intent on being taken seriously. To do that they put on a very serious expression; thinking that that'll do the trick. Of course, for us folks from English-speaking countries, such behaviour prompts us to silently ask ourselves: "Just what the fuck have I done to make this person so belligerent?" Gionn Caomhin Morpheagh this this an interesting theory I really like. For centuries, it was hard to survive in German and the past 100 years were only good for everyone in Germany during the past 30 years. That’s why I think Germans tend to take life more serious and demonstrate this. Being a „Hallodri“ is not considered an achievement over here. Other than in the States, Italy, Africa where you may very well end up to be President like that. I think our seriousness is both a strength and a weakness.

I, a German, was visiting my American girlfriend (at that time) in the US. It was really interesting to be asked how I am by everyone. Even the guy who wanted my ID for a sixpack of beer. The first two or three times I tried to be polite and respond, only the "wtf" in the eyes of the people who asked me after i started giving them a detailed analysis of my well-being held me back. From my trip on I wonder why you guys are doing this. You can see someone go to a group, say "hi, how are you" to everyone and turn straight to the next guy without bothering waiting for a response. It's not polite, it's kind of rude. Not the person doing it, but the whole act. If you don't want to know how someone else is doing, why bother asking? :D

In Germany you should always be on time, except for parties, you should never be on time or early for parties, that can be perceived as rude. People don't "stare", they look. Calling it " staring" is rude. ;) German customers want to use cash hence cash is king.

Being on time is a sign of respect for germans (or austrians), or at least for me. It's a form of respect to value someone elses time as much as you value yours, and thats why we are on time mostly. Also, smalltalk is a waste of time.

About soccer fans: in Germany there is the word "Risikospiel" (i.e. "risky derby") for some soccer matches. This does not mean that the game of the football teams involved is dangerous, but the encounter of the fans of these teams. In risk matches, around the stadium significantly more policemen are deployed to prevent brawls, bottle-throwing and squabbling between the fans of either team.

Here in Chile it the response can get kind of weird, you can answer "good" or "good, but don't worry about it" 🤦🏻‍♂️ The standard response in the UK, whether you have been diagnosed with cancer or won the lottery is "not too bad". I think national characteristics, like optimism or pessimism can be affected by the standard response to the question "how are you?" The USA ... wildly, and unrealistically optimistic Chile... optimistic, leavened with caution Germany... stark practical realism UK... "life is pain, highness. Anyone who says differently is selling something"

Chilukar , I needed ages to get used to this when I first came to Germany from Ireland, 26 years ago. When you see one of your neighbours whom you know and you greet them with “Hallo, wie geht‘s” ?, they’ll often tell you that they have a bit of a cold at the moment and don’t feel very well, when you just mean it as a greeting. I was often stuck talking to some of them for over ten minutes, listening to a list of their physical symptoms and had to try and make a quick getaway. Mind you, they listen to what you have to say too. They are wonderfully friendly people and once you make a friend here in Germany, they’ll be your friend for life.

Proper bread gets enough time to rise and ferment, is just flour, water, salt and yeast...no additives, flour improvers, or god forbid as found in American white "bread"-sugar. 🤢 Chorleywood (Industrial bread) from mixing to processing is not real bread. Plus it takes 3 years of rigorous learning and exams to become a Master Baker in Germany. And you can't open a bakery without those qualifications. German bakers are the best for a reason. That's why American bread is fattening and German is not... (unless you put piles of butter on top 😂)

Real bread is made from flour and water plus a little Starter made from only flour and water then left to ferment & be fed with more flour for a week or so. No yeast. That's a short cut. Look for a Schaubäckerie or a Klosterbäckerie. You can smell the fake bakeries from the aroma evident as soon as you walk in.

It's not only a saying. Most lectures and seminars at universities start "c.t." which means "cum tempore" = "with time", which means 15 minutes after the given time. So, if the university calendar says that the lecture on French medieval architecture starts at "15:00 Uhr c.t.", it actually starts at 15:15. The opposite would be "s.t." = "sine tempore" = "without time", therefore 15:00 means 15:00.

There is a practical background to this. Technically every course in university is scheduled to be two hours long. So you have a course from 8 to 10, one from 10 to 12 aso. I am sure you can already see the problem with this...being that those courses don't happen in the same room and the students often have to walk over half of the university to get from one to the next. Hence in reality, every course ends a quarter before the full hour and starts a quarter after the full hour. That is the so called "Akademischen Viertel" - the time planned so that students have a chance to get to their lectures in time. (And yes, there are also one hour courses, which then end exactly on the hour and sometimes even start on time, but they are specifically signed). So it is less an excuse and more an acknowledgement of a practical need.

As a German, when you are 8, it is compulsory that you get your funny bone surgically removed. No more laughter after that. I'm American but my family is mostly German descent. I'm not going to lie your videos make me want to move back there. Germans seem to be very clean, respectful, punctual and just overall a lot like me. I hate small talk, like i'm supposed to pretend like meeting the cashier at Walmart is the single greatest event in history, no shut up bag my groceries and take my money. I hate people that are late, if i'm not at least 5 minutes early i feel like i've done something wrong. Also the fact that places close at night and on Sundays, well it means Germans prioritize family over money which i can really respect. They seem to have enormous respect for the law, rules and order in general which i can strongly relate to. Americans look at laws more like suggestions than laws. America has become so divisive, materialistic, and fake. Honestly i'm just sick of it. I love America but its gone downhill fast, or maybe all the old people saying "back in my day" are full of shit and its always sucked. You can meet someone in public and they'll act all nice and polite, but as soon as you get out in traffic with them they will cut you off, not let you merge etc. Every time i read the news its "Trump did this or Trump did that", "so and so is a racist". Everyone in America is at each others throats all the time, whites against blacks, men against women, conservatives against liberals. I think this is the dark side of free speech, everyone being too open with their opinions. Then there's things like healthcare, paying huge amounts of money to see a doctor who will do NOTHING to treat your condition and just prescribe a bunch of liver-destroying chemicals( medicine as they call it). Education where you go to school to learn nothing useful and they dumb things down to the point where no one is challenged just so they can get higher graduation rates because that determines the size of their paycheck. Employment where you are constantly under-payed and overworked because you have to do the job of 10 people because either they won't hire enough people or the people they do hire are so lazy you end up doing their job. I'm not saying Germany is devoid of these problems, the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence after all. But America is only going downhill from here in my opinion, its best to jump ship while you still can.

The tradition of Coffee and cake is called "Kaffeetrinken", automatically including cake - NO cookies - for older people. Very interesting generation thing. If I ask a friend wether he is up for Kaffeetrinken, he will think of grabbing a cup of coffee, maybe at home, maybe not. If my father asks a wether he is up for Kaffeetrinken, he will turn up at my parents house, undoubtedly expecting self-made cake and coffee.

Being late in Germany.. or rather, as a German.. Personally, I tend to run late. But through living in different countries I realised that even that isn't quite true. I was late to most of my abi exams. However, if someone is specifically waiting for me, I am always 5 minutes early. BUT. Let's say you are invited to a party. It starts at 19:00. If I am close friends with the host,I would arrive at 19:00 or earlier, to help. As a general "friend" I would arrive at around 20:00. As an acquaintance, I would come at 21:00.So all the closer friends would've spent time already. I would feel super weird between friends meeting between 19:30 and 20:00.

At age eleven or so, I remember looking straight into the eyes of our German landlord's wife, buying milk at their ground floor store, just to see her what she was all about. We locked our eyes and for a moment, her pupils were all I saw. A religious person would say I was dredging for her soul. She turned out to be a very sweet, friendly and loving woman. They really liked their American Baukostzuschuss tenants. We had the apartment right above theirs. Their grocery store, large for the fifties, is now an electronics hobby shop in Heidelberg.

I lived in the same town you are living as a soldier. It was a wonderful place good people I even spoke passable German. Going back to visit soon after 43 years now I'm retired. Americans know so little of other cultures. I'm American but I consider I became a man in Germany I was 19 left when I was 22.

Kaffee & Kuchen is mainly a family thing that happens very roughly around 3 pm. So getting invited to it by friends is rather unusual and it doesn't surprise me you haven't been invited yet. But it really is sorta a tradition, especially in smaller towns and rural areas. I live in a big city and we don't really do it here, but whenever we visit my grandma, she has at least one cake prepared for having Kaffee & Kuchen^^

Coffee and Cake does not have to be on a sunday. It's more of a time of day for social (mostly familiy events). You would invite the family for lunch, for dinner, or "Kaffee and Kuchen" which would be around 3-4pm. For example after your Birthday or Christmas

I heard about the staring part so many times and I honestly don't get it. In my 23 years of being german I never experienced someone staring me down without reason. Whenever I meet eyes with someone accidentally one of us quickly looks away. And I mean... I (and I bet most people do) look at people from time to time because there's something about their face or their clothes that interests me, but I always look away when they're turning. Is that so different from the US?
