10 Things that ANNOY Podcast Listeners

I only enjoy podcasts where people go off on tangents. That's what makes a lot of shows interesting. There are just as many people out there who LOVE a show where the hosts can carry us on a well-connected and hysterical journey that brings us right back to topic. I fully implore any of you podcasters out there, that if you and your co-host have really good chemistry, please go off topic and make us laugh. I want it to feel like I'm with friends, not being lectured.

This is probably why Ladies and Tangents is so popular. They have their topics, but they section off like 15 minutes for each one, but if they offshoot somewhere else because of it, it usually ends up as a hilarious discussion.

This is so interesting. First this is the first comment I’ve read. And second , this is exactly the type of content I want to share. It’s random all connected and mostly improve with topics that relate. I had a close friend who reached out and wanted to set up a podcast/KZbin channel with me. We had 100% spot on chemistry. The bantering was hilarious. We had a couple people tell us to set up a TY or podcast because we were very funny. I hope to meet someone similar , who I can develop fun bantering chemistry with. Thanks for sharing. 😊

My advise is to listen to the playback of your own show. If you find something you said, or did to be annoying, your listeners will too. It's very good training to improve the quality of your content. BTW, I'm new to your channel, this is actually my first video, but I instantly subscribed the very moment I saw the title card of your show. My pet peeve on some podcasts is when a guest starts talking (and making good points) and the host interjects with “their experience”. In other words, they start talking about themselves too much and it takes away from the guest.

Yes, I wonder about this one too, because I'm creating a podcast, and as a listener of others' podcasts, I often actually like when the host inserts relatability -- yet yes, when it takes over, not so good, and as a new host, I will want to watch out for this!

Wikipedia is considered non-copyright protected and MOST things can be used without accreditation, as it is not considered an "officially reliable" source because anyone can contribute and edit- I did not realize this. so I looked this up and confirmed it just moments ago!

My daughter and I have been doing a podcast for 2 1/2 years. We don't have many listeners or subscribers and we do almost all the things this video says not to do, but we are having a ball and have a growing collection of conversations between us to save for the future.

I know, people expect so much of content creators and are so quick to criticize. But I think behind their pickiness is always something to be learned. Once they become your super fans, they’ll buy anything you tell them to 😁

The ones who complain about ads and patreon are the ones you shouldn't care about at all. They don't ad value and their complaints, if taken as advice, will harm a podcast's long term viability and financial health. It's stupid to platform that in a serious way in this video because it's actual bad advice, even with a weak disclaimer after.

​​@@OfficerRFriendly some folks go to alternative information resources to avoid for-profit. It's fine if "you're" offering a podcast for free, yet that means you don't put up any ads, AT ALL. Free, not a discount. Johnny Carson, successful entertainers thanked the TV audience for allowing them into our living rooms. This arrogance is quite entertaining! Just because you have a podcast, doesn't mean you have anything relevant, important or accurate to say.. The customer's always right... Or you're not going to have any customers. I've joined some podcasts and supported them very early on-then suddenly the priority became 1000 subs, ads, likes, thumbs ups, donations-and the priority & conversation entirely changed. And I unsubscribe. They changed, I didn't. Perhaps when podcast folks would like to ask for donations, instead of giving people just a link to give you money, explain what you're spending the money on. Explain that you're not taking other paid ads. If that's the case. Explain what uniquely qualifies them to be paid for their opinion. What have they got into that podcast? KZbin is "free"- why you want to be on here -all that exposure for free. You don't have to pay to post your podcasts. You have to share profits if you monetize Some folks come on here simply to share information and knowledge if you want to change your base audience, don't like people complaining that it's not "free", on a free KZbin website? Then only offer your podcast on KZbin premium or paid subscriptions. Don't get your marketing and exposure on a free website, for free- where people join because it's free. But it's not free, if you want to put up ads, beg for money, subs or likes because you're asking for something of value to you. And every time we click your video, give a thumbs-up, we're turning our private data over to KZbin analytics, giving up our privacy to watch your content. For us to donate, we've got to turn over our information to patreon, trustpilot, all these irrelevant websites we have to join, just to give you a couple of bucks? What the hell?! We turn over our KZbin accounts and give them permission to invade our privacy, look at our videos and comments, to donate? Why don't you make donating less invasive For free or not.

Obviously I listened to the content of the top 10. But I paid the most attention to the top ten least annoying things about this podcast imo: 1-simplicity/consistent/uncluttered audibly/visibly. 2-"jumped in"to content quickly enough to maintain my attention 3-cleverly broke rule #3 without being annoying 4-subtle, creative editing without being jarring 5-emphasis on quality not loud attention grabs or special FX 6-locked and level eye contact with pro camera set-up. Didnt look fish-eyed or looking off in the distance. Didn't have to look up podcasters nostrils. 6-no distractions that drew attention to podcasters political ideals/regional origin/musical preferences etc. 7-well-rehearsed and natural 8-succinct 9-gave a simple, credible description of his expertise without being hyperbolic 10-spoke with enthusiasm, confidence, and clarity

We're 3 months in and the first bit of advice I would give is "know where you're going in the conversation." When you don't know, you end up committing a lot of these annoyances: long pauses, "um"s, lip smacks, tangents, repeating points, etc. Our podcast is guilty of this, so we need to do better at outlining each show.

Brand new I haven’t even started yet. I am binging your videos. I’m starting very low budget. Doing this with minimal equipment and I have never done anything like this. It’s just me by myself and whatever God has planned for this. I do not have a computer I will be doing it all from my IPhone.

Great list! I agree with all of them. My big pet peeve is when the host doesn't get to the main topic soon enough. We don't care about the meaningless banter/weather/etc.

Great points... a how-to of what not to do. My goal is to produce a podcast that sounds natural to listeners. (Listeners should never know or even think that it’s edited. A great editor is inconspicuous!) You’re audio effects (compression, shouting, etc) in this were slick. Nice touch!!

Ahhhhh!!!! One of my pet peeves is ongoing music while the host speaks. And you have done this in this video-nonetheless it’s a great episode and I am so happy to have found your channel. I listen to a podcast where the host has such great content but I can barely stand listening because of the super annoying music.

These are all great. One more might be length. So many podcasts are just SO LOOONG (due to some of the annoyances on your list no doubt). If your podcast about a movie is longer than the movie, that might be too long, right? We have a 30 minutes or less guarantee, like a sitcom or old school Domino's delivery.

With regard to this particular one, you covered many of the points that irritate me as well, including the NO EDITING and hosts talking over each other. I will be starting a podcast with a business partner soon, we are realtors. I don’t like the real estate videos in our area that much because there is a limited audience. I have content already written (not AI) as blogs about local history. We plan to tie in real estate loosely based on the topic. I’ve been taking notes on what we don’t like about podcasts, and most were on your list. But the biggest pet peeve is the talking about the weekend, hate that. As I am getting ready to start doing a podcast/vlog for my company really great material here as well as well as refresher as I use as I used to do talk radio in a previous life. Your point about inside jokes is well taken as a friend of mine who had been the morning guy at a major station in our market when I started out told me don’t do what he called “Board Talk” or “Inside Baseball”. I was a great fan of the late Don Imus (Imus in the Morning). A gentleman who called on me said he hated listening to Imus because he felt like the whole thing was an inside joke and if you hadn’t listened to him every day for years, you didn’t get it. Ironically, his wife loved the show. Your point about being scripted is spot on, I was afraid I’d sound like I was reading, so I would have an outline of bullet points that I wanted to talk about, which made it easy to see as well as reference.

Great list! Another annoying thing is when the podcasters just ask another question rather than going deeper on what the interviewee was saying. It's like they don't even recognize what they're saying and totally go into another subject. Either they are just wanting to get their questions answered a little bit, and keep within time and make sure all questions are being asked, or, they have no idea what the interviewee is saying and it's above their head. Sometimes what the interviewee said is so interesting! and then it just drops and moves on to next. I'd rather have a longer podcast cut up in shorter snippets to deepen on subjects. And that's why I'm creating a podcast -- still learning editing at this moment. It's called Technology of Self -- just really getting going now!

Really enjoyed this video. The thing that annoys me the most is people talking over each other and hosts interrupting guests. I was just listening to a podcast where the host giggled and laughed at everything the guest said. (And it’s a serious podcast.)

One thing i hate is when the audio fades in every sentence. Like when the audio goes from not there or really low to normal level audio every sentence that is being said. It's annoy as all he'll and makes it hard to listen to the content.

Thank you for the show. All things I’d agree with when watching others’ KZbins or interviews too, for that matter! Ok, you asked for what else bothers us. Here are some and a few you won’t like as your account does a few of these too.. but not horribly so! (But I know you’re the pro and am sure you’ve done your research and found it works, so feel free to ignore these few.) All of these are not aimed at anyone in particular, just things that are annoying to many (but rarely dared mentioned ) in various podcasts people do! Ok, so here it goes: If including video: 1a. Make sure you don’t have a bunch of clutter around that looks messy. If someone can’t even be bothered to tidy up a bit and show some effort then it says to moat of us that they really don’t care or are totally self absorbed. 2a. Don’t add miscellaneous sound affects just bc you can. It make me feel like the podcaster must assume we lack any attention span that we need to be distracted / “entertained” all the time with various pops, bubbles, squeaks like we’re some baby or puppy something. Annoying and childish oftentimes. Why not go all the way and just start talking in a baby voice to us then? Lol. 3a. Don’t make it appear that we are being zoomed in and out of the frame instead of leaving the frame as is- that’s far more natural. If I want to make it appear you are closer or far away I can rock back and forth as needed! Again, I don’t have ADHD- I don’t need constant distraction! 4a. Avoid constant logo shots every time just one point is made. We’re not stupid- we got it the first time and, yes, you’ve gotta make money but once near the start and once at the end should suffice. 3 times max! 5a. Like point 1a. Don’t offend me by looking like you just woke up or spilled your cereal down your t-shirt or haven’t brushed your teeth. At least look slightly ready! I don’t know you well enough to see you in your slob wear.. nor do I want to.. no matter how enthralling you might be. 6a- worst peeve- but more so with KZbinrs doing interviews! Don’t look at your screen!! Look me in the eye by looking at your camera. Otherwise it feels again like it’s all about you and not your audience. Ok, now if just audio podcasts: 1b. Don’t blare loud music where it’s gonna give me a headache or startle me as I’m tuning into your show unaware. It’s like shouting before you’ve even said hello! And don’t have music or background sound affects so present that it actually is distracting from hearing your voice and message. 2b. Don’t assume everyone thinks you’re super smart or funny because, bravo, you know how to swear! Not everything needs to have the f-bomb or whatever all the time. Try to sound intelligent and employ other words like you have more than an elemental grasp of the language. English, for example, is an amazing language- use it! Also, why unnecessarily offend your audience if they just don’t like swearing for whatever reason? Don’t assume, for example, if you’re talking about paranormal stuff that therefore none of us have any standards or class even and care if you burp out obscenities because you lack verbal imagination or self restraint or just don’t slightly care to be respectful. 3b. Likewise, don’t make constant dumb frat boy jokes about drinking- a lot of us left that ages ago or never were into partying. It’s cringe worthy when people can’t seem to embrace being an example instead with some sense of maturity/responsibility. Getting drunk is no longer funny for a lot of us and a lot of us care about our health too btw! 4b. Don’t have background soundtrack the whole time! It’s particularly an American thing here it seems. Silence even for a second cN be Golden! You can build up excitement and tension as much by what is not said as what is said! Ok, these are some things I suspect most people don’t even consider! Hope this helps some. We’re not all the same even if we might enjoy the same subject matter and tune in! Why turn off people right off the bat with some of these things?! Now, will you reply as you said you will? That too can be super annoying when hosts say they will reply to comments but don’t. Better yet, just don’t say it then if any of you know you can’t. Thx

Thank you for your consideration for the listener. For me, I prefer no background music while the presenter is speaking. I find it to be a distraction to my ability to concentrate on the topic at hand; thereby diminishing the effectiveness of the overall message.

You stated all the things that annoy me when listening to podcasts. Quite frankly, I can't figure out why someone would want to listen to an unedited podcast. Or one with bad sound. Or one with the inside jokes that go on for too long without any explanation... (I could go on to mention all the things you said, but I won't.)

You did two of my peeves in the first 1-2 mins 😂 I like very short intro graphics like 2 seconds of a logo. Also asking for subscribers or likes or comments or anything from me when I haven’t even got into the first 5 minutes…why should I subscribe when I have t heard you yet? How should I comment when I haven’t listened yet? Why should I like when I haven’t heard the video/cast yet? 😂

If people are having a conversation I like stereo. The BBC does a great job with this while still permitting either channel to be listened to in mono if the podcast listener chooses. I listen to podcasts with over the ear headphones and too many podcasts sound sterile.

Going off topic is a good point, but when it comes to unscripted conversation based podcasts, doesn't always apply, Joe Rogan Podcast for example.
