Für alle, die deutsch nicht als Muttersprache haben: Die deutsche Welle (DW) bietet auch kostenlose Deutsch-Sprachkurse an. DW ist Teil des öffentlich-rechtlichen Rundfunks, wird also von jedem Deutschen über den Rundfunkbeitrag bezahlt, weshalb dort auch keine Werbung zu sehen sein sollte. DW bietet z.B. langsam gesprochene Nachrichten und auf das entsprechende Sprachniveau (C bis einschließlich A1) ausgerichtete Lerninhalte an.

Ordnung und Sauberkeit finden Sie "nervig"? Das manche von Pfandgeld leben müssen finden sie normal? Sich beim Essen übermäßig laut die Nase zu putzen verursacht bei mir würgereize. Krach am Abend oder besser noch in der Nacht ist sehr ärgerlich wenn man früh aufstehen muss um zu arbeiten, um diesen ganzen dekadenten Zustand mit finanzieren zu müssen. Die Lärmverursacher können ja ausschlafen. Anstatt unsere Art zu verunglimpfen, bringen Sie den Wissbegierigen und lernwilligen doch mal nahe , dass man seinen Müll nicht überall hinschmeisst, von der Waschmaschine bis zum Kühlschrank, von Matratzen und anderem Sperrmüll. Oder anderen Fussgängern auf dem Gehweg auch noch etwas Platz lässt. Nur einige kleine Beispiele die uns wundern wie man sich so benehmen kann. Wir werden sicher nicht auf dieses Niveau herab sinken.

I think the Ruhezeit and Mülltrennung are actually good things👍. The Ruhezeit benefits all, many cities in Germany even have local regulations for it. The wrong filled trash bins are either not emptied or you get fined for it, if you live in an apartment, you have somehow to share the consequence of your neighbors' mistakes

Die Nachtruhe ist nicht nur in der Hausordnung zu finden, sondern sogar im Gesetz. Da ich selbst immer um 4 Uhr morgens aufstehen muss, finde ich dieses Gesetz auch sehr gut 🤭😅

Everything here is so true! Me and my friends were once standing on the footpath in Berlin, talking and having fun. We forgot that we're blocking the way, then a man walked through us without a word, pushing his suitcase in my face and walked along like nothing happened and I could just stare in shock. Also, once we were sitting in a balcony slightly intoxicated, talking normally, laughing in between on a Friday evening. Then suddenly someone shouted something from another building. I checked my phone and it was EXACTLY 10 PM! The person was waiting for the clock to hit 10 to shout at us.

Yeah, I grew up in Germany and this German 'habit' annoys me. The situation, when someone not necessarily hits you with his luggage, but at least squeezes himself/herself past you, when you are 'in the way'. I feel this is a stupid habit. I prefer when people just ask "hi, kann ich bitte vorbei?".

I'm on a 11 day trip in Bavaria, and I've been learning German for 4 months. Before the trip I was thinking I may need to pretend not to speak English in order to practice while here, but literally everyone has been glad to speak German with me as soon as I start speaking in German. Also, no one has tried speaking Bavarian with me (thank God 😅). Every person I came across has been so nice, and most are really tickled and happy that I can speak some German. I don't speak nearly enough to have conversations, but despite this I've somehow had hours of conversations in German, bc the people have really been that patient and friendly :). So it can happen.

The 4th example of being talked to in English while wanting to improve my German really hit me! I was studying in Austria in 2020 for a semester abroad (I’m from the USA) and every time I wanted to converse in German, people just switched straight to English. It was a little frustrating, but it helped that some Austrians wanted to improve their English skills, so it made it a little easier to hold a conversation.

I had the same problem. When I was there it was always "We don't have to speak German, we can speak English". After a while I was practically yelling "Ich kann schon Englisch! Sprich mir auf Deutsch!"

Ich hatte das mal mit einer Kollegin die aus Kanada kam und natürlich erstmal kein Deutsch sprach es aber lernte und sich zunächst noch nicht getraut hat mit uns auch Deutsch zu sprechen. Da musste man sich echt zwingen nicht auf Englisch mit ihr zu sprechen. Wir haben dann einfach deutsch mit ihr gesprochen und sie hat auf englisch geantwortet. Das hat ihr auch geholfen die Sprache schneller zu lernen.

There might be also another reason involved with this. Many German speakers speak a dialect and standard German is only kind of their second language. For a dialect speaker it is completely normal to chose the language he speaks based on the situation. In school standard German is mandatory so he is trained for this starting at a young age. When a dialect speaker talks to someone where he can expect that the other is no dialect speaker, it is just normal to switch to standard German. Otherwise it might be hard or impossible to talk with each other. English adds just another layer to this. Instead of switching from dialect to standard German then the switch is done to English.

Hello easy German team I wanted to tell you guys this so I’ve been waiting for your new video to come out. When I started learning German which was last year November I couldn’t watch your videos without looking at the English subtitles and after a while I kind of got frustrated and left your Channel alone for a bit. I continued to learn German for all those months by myself because I’m a teenager and I’m self taught but Then something amazing happened. Wow thats cool, i can say the same, i started learning german around February this year (but i had some school exam which i finished at the end of june, so i wasnt studying that much tbh) and back then I could barely understand easy Germans Videos without stopping them at every sentence and reading the english translation to help me understand the german sentences. But now, after studying german grammar and vocabulary, listening to lots of german music and reading many german short stories i can say that i can almost watch their videos without english subtitles, and im really happy to see my progress 😄. Even tho im still far from being able to understand without any subtitles at all (since these guys speak so fast 😂), i will definitely keep studying this amazing language. I was in Berlin in 2009 and I was impressed with how clean everything was. I am still impressed to this day as I have been to many large cities since and none of them compare. Cities in Japan came pretty close, though. One evening in Berlin I was waiting for the U-Bahn and I saw a woman in a beautiful fur coat with expensive jewelry walking around picking up a few pieces of garbage and sorting them into the proper receptacles. It blew my mind because here in the US you never see people with that kind of wealth lowering themselves to such a menial task, especially if they are not being paid to do it. I think that Germans have a strong sense of civic pride and responsibility that can be very inspiring

Also, it was 2009, so maybe Berlin lost its pride since then? 😋 I plan to visit Europe again, hopefully soon. @@jonathanbartlett1098 Baden-Württemberg is the state in the SW parts of Germany, also home to the Black Forest and.. well, something, I guess, yeah, Mercedes and Porsche. Cleanliness is not exactly a virtue in those parts of the country - especially in the infamous region of Swabia - but rather OCD. So, cleanliness not for reasons of hygiene but rather as a competive sport in suburbia to show off an even more immaculate front garden or getting up at 4am to scrub your driveway. Think Desperate Housewives, multiply by 50, subtract the sex and that's living in Swabia. The rest of Germany thinks of it as a place in between purgatory and hell. But they are filthy rich, one has to admit. And everything is clean. If you plan to murder someone and look for someone to clean up the mess, hire a Swabian housewive. Not even the FBI will find any traces afterwards ;-)

It was good to finally hear Nick speaking german. You guys did a fun video. One of my best experiences in learning german was having conversations with a german whose english was weak and me being an american whose german was weak. The net result was my struggling with german until I could go no further and had to switch to english. The german would struggle with english until she could go no further and had to switch to german. From the context of our discussion topic we simultaneousy improved our foreign language.

In high school I worked at the Magic Kingdom and earned a "Ich spreche Deutsch" pin after passing a basic oral test. Most Americans read it and erroneously asked, "You speak Dutch"? I figuratively rolled my eyes and said, "No, German". As Deutsche Einheit occurred my senior year it became helpful to the former east Germans. Some English-speaking Germans, and I'm sure a few Austrians, spoke to me auf deutsch to help me practice my German. In 1996 I visited Germany for the second time and most people spoke back to me in German, even though they spoke English very well. There were a few, however, who refused after greeting me in German. I had a wonderful time and looking forward to visiting again, maybe even staying for a month or two. It's nice hearing the language again and really enjoy your videos. Es tut mir leid das ich auf Englisch getyppt habe. Ich habe diese Sprache zeit 2010 nicht gesprochen oder geschrieben.

Hmm, also das mit dem Lärm nach 22 Uhr finde ich persönlich wirklich sehr störend. Wenn ich am nächsten Tag sehr früh aufstehen und zur Arbeit muss, ist es für mich nicht möglich im Bett die nötige Ruhe zum Einschlafen zu finden. Nicht jeder hat die Begabung auch bei größtem Lärm sofort einschlafen zu können. Insofern finde ich nicht, dass das etwas nervig Deutsches ist, sondern Rücksicht aufeinander durchaus etwas erstrebenswertes.

Sehe ich genauso! Es wird so oft mit „spießig“ gleichgesetzt, womit es in meinen Augen nichts zu tun hat. Es hat was mit Rücksichtnahme zu tun.

Ja, ein paar Nachbarn haben neulich mitten in der Woche eine Geburtstagsfeier gemacht. Mit lautem gegröhle, Countdown und "Happy Birthday to you" um Punkt 0 Uhr und anschließend lauter Musik. Ich mein, am Wochenende bin ich ja gern bereit, ein Auge zuzurücken. Mitten in der Woche fehlt mir dafür aber jegliches Verständnis. Zum Glück konnte ich aber einfach die Fenster zumachen und hatte so meine Ruhe (auch wenn ich im Sommer sehr gerne mit offenen Fenstern schlafen würde). Bin allerdings auch schwer vorbelastet, weil ich über 1 1/2 Jahre mit lauten Nachbarn um die Nachtruhe kämpfen musste. Und ich rede hier nicht von "die haben um 22:05 noch Musik angehabt", ich rede hier von "die haben zu jeder Tages und Nachtzeit laute Musik angehabt, manchmal bis 4 Uhr morgens, manchmal auch AB 4 Uhr morgens, manchmal so laut, dass bei mir die Scheiben geklirrt haben, obwohl ich 3 Stockwerke über denen wohnte", und das über ein Jahr lang (man musste halt erstmal auch rausfinden, von woher das kam, dann erstmal auf die freundliche Art versucht mit persönlicher Ansprache, die genau gar nix gebracht hat, dann den Vermieter einschalten, usw...). Und kaum waren die Nachbarn aus der 8. Etage ruhig, fingen die Nachbarn aus der 12. Etage an, mitten in der Nacht Karaoke zu singen, kleine Kinder trampelten um 3 Uhr Nachts laut brüllend durch die Wohnung und was weiß ich nicht noch alles. Der Hammer war, dass ich mal am 25.12. um 4 Uhr morgens bei denen auf der Matte stand (meine Frau musste an dem Tag arbeiten und hätte gerne noch etwas geschlafen), und am selben Abend noch fangen die wieder an, Party zu machen. Da hab ich die Polizei gerufen weil ich mit den Nerven einfach nur noch am Ende war. Der Scheiß macht einen auch psychisch krank. Sorry für den Rant. Obwohl das ganze jetzt schon bald 10 Jahre her ist, sitzt das bei mir immer noch ziemlich tief. Ich glaube jemand der das nicht selbst durchgemacht hat kann nicht so ganz nachvollziehen, warum es einige Menschen gibt die hyperempfindlich auf lärmende Nachbarn reagieren.

das liegt eher an dieser "amerikanischen" Ich Ich Ich Kultur in der Rücksicht auf Andere (die Gemeinschaft) keinen hohen Stellenwert hat und das durchsetzten persönlicher Interessen im Vordergrund steht. Leider geht das immer mehr verloren und Menschen die wie in deinem Beispiel Ihre Nachtruhe brauchen leiden darunter. Finde es auch immer befremdliche wenn Leute empört sind, wie ich mich erdreisten kann ihre Bauunternehmen am Sonntag Morgen als störend zu empfinden usw. Leider wird der Trend immer weiter in diese Richtung gehen. Tue mich gerade aktuell auf dem Wohnungsmarkt sehr schwer etwas für meine Junge Familie zu finden, da ich immer davon ausgehen muss dass jeder Nachbar ein potentielles Risiko darstellt.

Great video again 🎉 Another thing you could have mentioned: how quick the cashier scans the products in a supermarket. They do it so quickly that I never get time to pack and sometimes some yogurts or Eggs fall on the floor and break. It goes too quickly and the experience is super stressing (for me and my British husband at least) 😅😂

Weeelll - as an ex-cashier I can tell you most of it is a question of organisation: I never pack my stuff in bags at the checkout but put them straight back into the cart. When putting your stuff on the belt, put the heavier things first and the things the cashier has to weigh at last (that buys you a little time, he he). It's also best if you have your wallet ready when you're still in line... ...and NEVER count coins, give a banknote or pay with card. Leave the coins for little shops where there is not this rush. This way you maybe have a chance to get even with the cashier ;-)) But don't worry about this too much - because most cashiers have A LOT of FUN playing their skill (full well knowing the customers can't follow the speed).

In Germany, people would have called the police 3 times over. In Germany, I had neighbours complain the next morning that my music was too loud the previous night inside my flat. It takes A LOT for an English person to complain about anything their neighbours are doing... I would say most Germans will not tolerate a noise disturbance at night.

It's not just a german thing that people respond in English when you want to learn the language. The same happened to me when I visited Norway for the first time. I learned some basic Norwegian at the University. It was a requirement to learn a new language for my Bachelor degree and I chose to learn Norwegian. When I visited the country 3 years later I wanted to practice my skills and started conversations in Norwegian but 50% of the people I met replied in English. They probably just wanted to help me and make the conversation easier when they realized my Norwegian was not good.

People just want to save others the embarassment one can feel in a conversation with strangers if they can't communicate how they want to. Usually we switch as soon as we notice our English is better than your whatever country you're visiting.

I am German but was born and raised in Canada, yet, I am more German than anything! When i first went to Germany I felt better there and more at home than I ever did in Canada. 4:40 The reason why many Germans continue to speak English is that they want to make sure that there are no misunderstandings in conversation. Even if the other person speaks some German, they may not speak it very well and may not understand everything and may be embarrassed to ask if they don't understand a common word. In the end, you can tell someone how to get to the station and it won't help the person at all because they won't be able to follow your directions and will get lost or have to ask the next person who comes along. This will not happen if you speak the person's native language well enough and give the answer in that language. There is no negative aspect here, Germans are just trying to be as helpful as possible. And remember: if you have a problem, e.g. you need to go somewhere urgently and you don't know how, this is not the best situation to "practice German". Asking for help is not the same as small talk, even if there was small talk, but by asking for help the situation was already given.

Als ich an einem Sonntagmorgen durch München geradelt bin (bin auch Ausländerin) stand an einer Ampel plötzlich ein alter Mann im Rollstuhl auf dem Fahrradweg. Weit und breit war niemand zu sehen außer der Mann und seiner Betreuerin und ich auf dem Rad. Ich vermute die Betreuerin wollte die Schwelle des Bürgersteiges für den Rollstuhl vermeiden. Ich fands aber so lustig, dass der sehr alte Mann im langsamen Rollstuhl auf der Fahrbahn für die "schnellen Roller" stand, dass ich neben ihn hinfuhr und fragte, ob er bereit sei, mit mir um die Wette zu fahren. Hahahaha Der weißhaarige Mann erwiderte daraufhin: "Dann muss ich mich aber sehr klein machen, um keinen Gegenwind zu haben." Made my day

This was really fun beginning to end. With regard to getting responses in German. First, I learned to start with 10 or 15 words in German. (Hello, I'm staying here in the hotel for a week, I'm in room 325, all good, but I have one question.) If you start like that, it is harder for the answer to come back in England. If you start with just "Guten Tag" or "Entschuldigung" with an English accent, that's where the dreaded answer comes in English "How can I help you?" Second, it depends where you are. If you are buying a museum ticket from a 60-year old in Weimar (former East Germany), no matter how bad your accent might be, I guarantee that conversation is going to stay in German.

I lived in an intentional community in a small town in Germany many years ago, and was surprised at some of the conversations. Several university students were talking about going out to dance. Then a long conversation began about the pros and cons of this idea. I was so surprised at the amount of time analyzing whether it was the right thing to do, whether it was a good idea or not. This was in the 1980s, and maybe it was that group of personalities. Nonetheless, I have never overheard the equivalent in the US, unless it was in jest. As you pointed out, Germans like rules, and maybe that affects some people's ability to be spontaneous, risking making a mistake. ??? - just wondering Thank you for another good lesson. Hearing more German will motivate me to study and memorize what can be boring when it is just me and a book!

I remember crossing a street yesterday here in Berlin on a pedestrian walk using a 4-wheeled walker. A lady came towards me and told me that it's common to walk on the right side. Being told what is wrong is typical German for me - even though there is another option to solve the problem. By the way: There was enough space next to me...! When I first moved to Germany, I was excited to get out and see what it was like. I grabbed my backpack and CD player (this was late '90s, early '00s) and left my apartment. I was maybe 5 blocks away and I saw a group gathered at an intersection. I walked up, looked left then right and couldn't see a car in either direction for as far as the eye can see. My German then was very rudimentary so I wasn't sure what they were all talking about. I looked left and right again, still no cars. I was wondering WTH was going on. Sort of confused why people were not crossing. There was nothing wrong with the road and there were no cars anwyhere. I was 3 steps into the road and could hear every gasping and muttering. I was even more perpelexed. I walked around (This was Trier) the city for hours, jaywalking who knows how many times. lol When I came across a friend who had been living in Germany for a few years, I mentioned it to him and he burst out laughing. A few days later, a large group of Germans and American friends went out for dinner. Everyone made their beer order, then food. Most of had our beers within 2-3 minutes, but one person I just met wa ssitting there without his. I asked him and he said "They're pouring it." Without saying anything to him, I figured I'd do him a favor and go ask the bartender where his beer was. She pointed to a 3/4 full beer in front of her. I'm thinking "What is this lady's problem? Is she dense?" Little did I know at the time, that I was the dense one. I told her to finish pouring it and give it to me. I wasn't rude, I just told her that I'll take the beer now. Only when I brought him his beer was it explained to me about that type of beer's process of pouring. What a royal jackass I was. lol I have LOTS of great stories big and small about my time in Germany. It was one of the best experiences of my life and what an amazing group of wonderful people, and a nation with a rich history, culture, architecture, language. and more. If anyone is ever on the fence about vacationing, don't waste any more thought, just do it. It's waaaaaaaaay better than you could imagine. After seeing and living in 27 states and about a dozen countries, it was one of my favorite places. I'd actually love to retire and live in Trier. I loved Germany that much.

These habits of the Germans of keeping tidy surroundings appeal to me. This so much increases concentration, and I guess does not diminish creativity. Whenever I face larger home-cleaning I go to German shop in Poland, because they are competitive on prices and creative cleaning solutions.

Especially about the trash, I really get angry if people don't sort their trash properly. Especially the organic waste should not be mixed with others. We had neighbours once who would throw everything in the Restmüll, whilch led to the cans being full 2-3 days after they were emptied so we had to store our waste in the apartment until the cans were emptied 2 weeks later or we'd have to go somewhere else to take it. Same with the other neighbors, we all were really angry at the ones who did this.

I apologise firstly for this being in English, I can only speak very basic German words but I am trying to learn through your videos so Danke! I can say that we have a similar thing here in the UK with internet, it just took 3 weeks for my new internet to be activated 😂 I visited Berlin in September (my first time in Germany) and one thing I noticed is Germans are very direct, that isn’t a bad thing, I actually prefer people being direct and I wish people here had some German traits!

Even if they are annoying and nosy sometimes, I think having a united neighbor culture is very useful and great for security!!! In Mexico is kinda the same but not really :'/

Sehr gute Folge von Easy German ! Für mich ist die schwierigste Sache ist, z.B. manche Regeln verlangsamt mich zum Weg irgendwohin. Beispielweise, ich immer als Fußgänger achte meistens die Lampen nicht, um schnellsten mein Ziel zu erreichen. Das heißt, Manchmal überquere ich während roter Lampe (für Fußgänger) wenn es kein Auto gibt oder das Auto so entfernt oder so langsam kommt. Ich warte nicht und gewinne einige Zeit zu mir. Generell finde ich mir effiziente und praktische Lösungen, die mir Zeit gewinnt. Aber ist nicht immer Deutschlich :D

Herrlich! Ich habe ein paar Mal laut gelacht - und auch ein paar Mal gedacht "Jaaa? Was ist denn daran besonders?" Voll erwischt! 😂 Ich war auf der Suche nach einem Kanal für eine Freundin, die aus Schweden nach Deutschland gezogen ist. Für sie sind Eure Videos eine prima Übung, vor allem, weil die Untertitel gut lesbar sind, die Themen ansprechend und das Ganze sehr unterhaltsam ist. Vielen Dank dafür! (Müll in die Biotonne stopfen geht aber auch GAR nicht!!! 😅🤣)

Feeling guilty. I'm definitely German from the bottom of my heart :) But: If I stood quite stupidly (sorry) in the middle of a sidewalk and hindered others in their way I would smile and say sorry. This costs nothing and is just a form of being nice. To just ignore the issue I caused seems to me very German :)

Maybe things have changed in the past 20 years, but once upon a time in Freiburg, I was enjoying some excellent beer in the garden at Feierling brewery. Someone at my table said something very funny and I laughed out loud, and by loud, I mean Mozart from Amadeus (the movie) loud. The entire garden went silent and the evil stares aimed my way could have melted iron from 100 metres away. Moral of the story: don't be loud. Also in Freiburg (more than once), I asked if I could have a Flammenkuchen (yummy pizza-like substance with cream, onions and Speck (bacon-like substance) without Speck, to which the unsmiling waitress replied "NEIN!!!" and that was that. At the time, that was quite a common response. The moral of the story: don't mess with tradition. I think restaurants are more flexible these days, as vegetarian options are more common now, but I imagine that that waitress (if she's still working) is still saying "Nein!!!"...

I guess the Flammkuchen is already prepared and just gets warmed if you order it. Taking out the bacon just isn't possible. The waitress still could have been more friendly. I hope you still had a nice time in Germany :)

It's worth persisting. At the check-in the lady asked if I was English and I replied (in my best German) that I was, but as I was in Germany I should practice my German. The rest of the conversation was in German, at the end of which she offered me an upgrade as she thought my (limited) German was pretty good. Versuch es weiter!

@@horst4439 Dann hätten er aber auch Busbahnhof, ZOB oder Bushaltestelle sagen müssen, sonst wird man automatisch zum Bahnhof geleitet. Niemand sagt in Deutschland Bahnhof, wenn man mit dem Bus fahren möchte. Aber ja, dann hätte die Wegbeschreibung gepasst.
