Congratulations on the video and the channel Oliver. Thank you for the information! You probably get this a lot, but I need to ask and I couldn't find a similar comment answered. I have a European passport. I intend to go to Finland this year, between September and December, knowing English, the basics of the Finnish language, and a few euros (around 1500€, perhaps) in order to find a job and live there. Do you consider this a doable goal? Should I look for a job before going or when I arrive in Finland? Would you recommend finding a place to stay or a job first? It would mean a lot to me if I had some guidance in this regard coming from a kind and knowledgeable person such as you.

Thanks Oliver - and very good information about what to do before coming to Finland. One missing point: Finland is, like all the other nordic countries, more or less a cash-free country. You pay all your «bills» with cards. Secondly: You seldom tip money in bars and restaurants; the salary takes care of that.

Hi Oliver, Thanks for the video! Here, I have a few questions: 1. Would you recommend students to buy their smartphones before coming to Finland? 2. Do you know if Finland will require international students outside of EU to go through 2 weeks of quarantine on their arrival to Finland?
@RoadtoFinnish
@RoadtoFinnish 4 жыл бұрын
Mmmm interesting questions.. haven't thought of these myself. I would say that buying a phone in Finland is a difficult question because that would depend on your country. I would say that this is totally up to you as phones are more "international" products than e.g. laptops where the keyboard is part of the hardware. Actually if you are interested in buying a new phone, there is a new trend in Finland. There is this really cool company called Swappie (swappie.com/fi-en/?changeLang) that sells refurbished phones for really nice price. They are growing like hell and they actually just today announced a new 40 Million euro round of financing that they are going to use to expand around Europe. I do recommend buying a phone from them if you intend to do so anyways. *Mandatory disclaimer, I am not paid to say this, but the founders are actually my class mates from business school so I love to support them* About the potential quarantine: this is very likely. Currently this is still mandatory, but there is no way of saying how the situation will evolve in the next three months.

@RoadtoFinnish
@RoadtoFinnish 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Mateo and thanks for the great question! Im also so sorry for the late reply. For some reason, KZbin doesnt notify me about all comments so I sometimes miss some of the comments in my videos. Anyhow, to answer your question, there isn't really that much to moving here. Id say the biggest hurdle is going through the residence permit process as a non-European Union citizen. However, this should be no problem if you have been admitted to study in Finland. The Finnish immigration service has a good website about the application process for the residence permit and the steps should be pretty straight forwards: migri.fi/en/residence-permit-application-for-studies Relocating and adjusting to living in Finland is a different question. While the US and Finland share a lot of the same values and cultural aspects, there are some more significant differences between the countries. However, this is just something you need to get used to and should not be a problem at all :) Let me know if you have anything more specific about this topic that you'd like me to elaborate on. Its hard to answer these kind of broad questions because they include so many smaller topics.

Hey you make really good and helpful videos. Thank you for your time and effort. I have a few questions regarding student card and apartment. I have accepted a study place in Finland. And currently I am preparing documents for my residence permit application. Can you tell me when should I apply for the student apartment and student card. What is the average processing time of apartment application?
@RoadtoFinnish
@RoadtoFinnish 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Rashmi and sorry for the late response. This weekend was the annual midsummer holiday and I was out of town so couldn't answer your questions before. First of all, huge congrats on being admitted to study in Finland 👊. Im sure you are going to enjoy your time here and id love to hear how everything goes once you relocate to the country. Now to your questions: *About student apartments* Applying to a student apartment should be your absolute priority number one at the moment (unless you have already done so). You can (and should) apply for a student apartment immediately after you have been admitted to study in a Finnish university. Depending on the city and the provider, queues for student apartments can be anywhere from some months to even 1-2 years so it is absolutely necessary to do this as soon as possible. However, there is no universal processing or queueing time as the time you have to wait depends on so many variables. If you are e.g. admitted to study in Aalto University, you can apply to AYY and Hoas apartments. Both have a different system in place. AYY has a literal queue system where you are assigned with a queue number and you have to wait until everyone else before you has been granted an apartment before you are offered one. Because there aren't enough student flats for all students, you might have to wait for a AYY flat for a long time. Hoas, on the other hand, has a different system. They grant apartments to students based on urgency and prioritisation. Nonetheless, you should apply right now. If not, you will risk having to rent from the private market. *About student cards* You can apply for a student card once you have paid your mandatory student union membership fee (you pay this when you enrol for the upcoming academic year) and when this payment has been registered (can take some days after you have paid the fee). Unlike with the student apartments, there is no rush with this. I have a video explaining student cards and the different options you have that I encourage you to check out: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hXaXgWt8rrpqnNE If you are not sure when you can order a student card, you can already register at Frank Students (company providing student cards in Finland) and they will let you know when you can order your card. You can do that here: www.frank.fi/en/ I hope these answered your questions. Do let me know if something was left unclear 👍

Hi your videos are really helpful. Is it really mandatory to carry laptop. How the study happens in universities. Is laptop is involved in most of the work
@RoadtoFinnish
@RoadtoFinnish 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Abhijit and thanks for the positive feedback, i do appreciate it! No, it is not mandatory to have a laptop but its highly recommended. Most of the work we do is done digitally and almost all deliverables are in a digital format. Universities do have plenty of computers at the campus BUT considering how much work you need to do at home, i think that you really need to get a computer to make things a bit easier for yourself. Otherwise you have to hang out at the campus for super long hours just so that you can get access to a computer. Studying in Finland happens in multiple different formats so its impossible to give you a direct answer here. However, it is quite common that classes in the beginning of your studies are done as mass-lectures where you have hundreds of students attending at the same time. In those courses you usually have to work independently on different kind of assignments and deliverables during the course. In addition, you will have a exam that takes into account all the material used during the course (books, assignments, lecture notes and discussions...) The further you get in your studies, the smaller the course groups are going to be. Also, depending on your field and major, the further you get in your studies, the less book exams there are. Again as mentioned above, this depends on your school, major and the courses you choose so its impossible to give you a direct answer. Btw, i have to admit that i dont remember whether or not you were already a part of our Discord server. If you are not, i do recommend that you consider joining. When is the health insurance checked? Should I buy it after reaching Finland?
@RoadtoFinnish
@RoadtoFinnish 3 жыл бұрын
How ive understood this is that you have to have an insurance before you apply for a residence permit. More information about this can be found on the finnish immigration service website: migri.fi/en/insurance If you are unsure of the exact steps and procedures, i would recommend that you contact the finnish immigration service (migri) directly because they will be able to give you 100% correct information. I operate with the information that they share on their website and based on my own experience so i might not be 100% correct every single time especially when it comes to residence permits. The permits are processed individually and there might be some small details that i miss.
@ag1805x
@ag1805x 3 жыл бұрын
@@RoadtoFinnish I have received RP and till now there were no talk of insurance.
@RoadtoFinnish
@RoadtoFinnish 3 жыл бұрын
Interesting. I would contact the finnish immigration service about this because they do state that a non EU or EEA citizen does need to have an insurance. It might be that its not required in the RP application but you still need to get one before moving to Finland. Most universities have listed proof of health insurance as one of the mandatory documents that you need to have when you arrive to Finland. No matter whether or not migri asks for it in the RP application, you are still required to cover your medical expenses with an insurance so make sure to take care of that before you travel to Finland. Otherwise you might bump into issues at the border.

Info from Migri website: Insurance is a mandatory requirement for residence permit for studies. No mention of the same for residence permit for researchers.
@RoadtoFinnish
@RoadtoFinnish 3 жыл бұрын
Mm interesting. Okey so what i recommend is that instead of contacting migri about this (they have a tendency of being a bit slow with email answers) i would contact your professor or the admission services at the university. The admission offices should know the answer to this question and they should answer pretty fast especially since you have already been admitted.

I can't thank you enough for this video, I got a question off-topic please! I have a 3 years gap between my graduation from high school and now, I have been in university in my home country during that time but I got no degree and I want to start from new in Finland, will that affect my residence permit application?
@RoadtoFinnish
@RoadtoFinnish 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Sardy and thanks for the really interesting question! I have to say that I do not have any experience with this topic but I would guess that your break from studies will not affect your residence permit application. Instead, this might have an impact on your university admission application, but again, I have no expertise on this area. Although, I could try and look into it. What school and field of study would you be interested in? I could try and have a chat with someone who is a bit smarter than me.

@@RoadtoFinnish thank you for your response Oliver, I have already granted a study place in a vocational qualification, now i am in the period where i am applying for the residence permit and i am worried that my application will get affected by the 3 years gap and I am wondering if I have to explain in the application the reasons of the 3 years gap, do I have to send any certificates that I was in the university or something like that, what do you think i should do? Thank you so much

@@sardy2475 I tried to get info from Finnish Immigration Services but they did not give me a direct answer. I interpret this as 'every residence permit is granted on an individual basis'. I also tried to look for any indications about this type of case from Migri's documentations but I couldn't find anything. This makes me think that this should not be a problem AND if the immigration service wants more information on the topic, they will ask you for it. So I would not stress about it.

Hi I recently got an admit in university of Turku, masters in smart systems. I was wondering how the job market for autonomous system is in Finland?
@RoadtoFinnish
@RoadtoFinnish 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Aishwarya! Huge congrats on being admitted to Turku, that is absolutely wonderful to hear! Im sure that you are going to enjoy yourself there 🥂. Its so lovely to hear these positive news from all the different people on the channel. To your question. I can naturally not guarantee that you can find a job no matter the field or your education. However, having said that, autonomous systems, automation, artificial intelligence, robotics and all things related to these topics are a huuuuuge market in Finland. You might not have known this but Finland is basically a land of engineers and historically speaking the majority of managers in big corporations in Finland have had an engineering background. Just to give you some context. Anyways, autonomous systems are growing super rapidly and even though its still a rather young field, the amount of jobs is also growing super fast. Even better, a large amount of these jobs do not require any Finnish. So yeah, there are definitely great and very well paid opportunities in this field. As an example, in addition to this youtube channel, im actually working on a tech startup that is, in the future, going to need a lot of engineers working on autonomous systems, IoT and AI.

@@RoadtoFinnish hi Oliver Thank you for the reply. I had absolutely no idea about the massive market for autonomous systems in Finland! However, I do have another question. Along with Turku, I got another admit from Canada. I'm quite confused as to which is better in terms of staying back and working in the field of smart and autonomous systems. The fee structure is fairly similar, the only difference is the immigration. I know that officials have to post an opening in the EU for a month before offering it to an international candidate ( we only get a year to stay back and find a job once we are done with our masters). With that being said, what would you suggest? Thank you :)
@RoadtoFinnish
@RoadtoFinnish 3 жыл бұрын
No problem at all. I just want to note here that getting a job as a student (no matter your citizenship) is never easy in the beginning. Usually getting your first job in the field is the hardest but it gets easier with every step. So just take this into account. Also, one more thing that should be noted is that getting a degree is never the end-all-be-all solution. Simply having a degree is never enough but you also have to be a) proficient in what you do and b) have the knowledge and skills to pitch yourself in a job application process. You know, just as a disclaimer so that no one can blame me of lying 😏. Having said this, i think you have an interesting situation in your hands. I cant say anything about Canada in terms of education and career opportunities and you have to do the choice of country on your own. Finland and Canada have a lot of similarities in terms of culture and day-to-day life so id say that you are safe with both options when it comes to these kinds of stuff. To comment on what you said about the prioritisation of EU applicants. This only applies when the company is looking for people who are physically outside Finland and who need a separate work visa (residence permit) to come and work here. This does not apply to you if you are already a student in Finland. When you apply for a job in Finland as an international student here, there is no kind of prioritisation in place when it comes to who can get an offer. [Edit] Also, you are correct in that after graduation you will be able to apply for a 1 year residency to find a job here. However, this only applies if you do not already have a job at the time of your graduation. A lot of people find a job already before they graduate and this way they will are able to apply directly for a residence permit on the basis of work. These are processed on a case-by-case basis but the only reasons for why the immigration service would deny you a residence permit after getting a degree here (if you already have a job) would most likely be based on serious issues like rule breaking etc.. More information about this can be found here: migri.fi/en/after-graduation

I am naturally biased when it comes to Finland vs Canada and i would naturally want you guys to come here. This is after all why this whole channel even exists 😅. Finland is going to need tens of thousands of skilled international workers in different fields in the upcoming years and im trying to advocate for our country and also do my part by creating job opportunities through building this tech company that i mentioned. Btw, if you are interested in learning more about this, we are about to launch the company in a few weeks. In short, we are aiming at disrupting the way that we produce food by making vertical indoor farming mainstream. We are building a fully automated (keyword being automation) indoor farming system that could be used to produce fresh herbs and leafy greens in any indoor location. This will make for better products and a more sustainable industry.

@RoadtoFinnish
@RoadtoFinnish 3 жыл бұрын
Hey and thanks for the question! Your age should not impact your choice of school at all. Since you are a high school graduate (again, your age doesnt matter here), you need to first do a bachelor's level degree (undergraduate degree) after which you can do a master's degree (graduate). As a detail, in Finland we dont use the term college. We have two types of schools of higher education: universities and universities of applied sciences. I explain the differences between these two in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q2PGdYZmraahoc0 In order for you to figure out where to apply, you should first figure out which field you want to study. Do you already have a field in mind or are you still thinking about this? Btw, since you are interested in studying in Finland, i really recommend that you join our Discord server. The idea of the server is to build a community of people interested in studying and working in Finland.
