Small talk? No, we don't like a lot of empty words. At work, we only want informations as short and precise as possible. Don't waste my time, get to the point. Here this is not inpolite, it is factual. We ask privately because we have an honest interest in the person. Conversely, if you ask something personal, I think you have an honest interest in me. That is empathy, and this is how deep conversations and social ties develop. So if you are not interested in the person, don't ask. Instead, choose a neutral polite phrase and go your own way. We only get angry when somebody is late AND if he or she does not have a good reason. Having an accident, or the means of transportation broke or something is family business. :)

The knocking on tables thing is basically a less formal version of clapping. You wouldn't do it at the theater or a classical concert, as it's basically the "lazy" version of clapping - but in more relaxed situations, like a comedy club or with a teacher or professor you know well it is totally fine. Thats why you will find it more often in class room settings then elsewhere.

If you ask a German "How do you do?" then you will get the current situation, incuding their significant other, their kids, their kids' teacher, the teacher's pet, and their parents-in-law. Well, kinda, Germans just don't understand that this is just an intro to a little small-talk.

Was ist an Socken in Sandalen verkehrt? Ohne Socken scheuert man sich doch bei längerem Tragen die Haut der Füße wund! Sandalen zu tragen ist sehr gesund und deshalb tragen wir Sandalen auch bei niedrigeren Temperaturen, was wiederum nur mit Socken möglich ist! Also, bitte erkläre uns Deine unbegründete Abneigung gegen Socken in Sandalen!

Du hast vollkommen recht, Menschen die aus unbekannten Gründen Socken in Sandalen nicht leiden können - sind total beschränkt und piefig, weil sie nicht wissen, was gute, gesunde Fußkultur ist !

Ich finde es stattdessen piefig, einen Menschen - wenn auch durch die Blume - gleich komplett negativ zu beurteilen, nur weil er die "Ungeheuerlichkeit" wagt ihre Socken in Sandalen optisch unmöglich zu finden. Zudem habe ich mit keinem Wort bestritten, dass diese Kombination der Fußgesundheit förderlich sein mag. Dem unbenommen bleibt es nach wie vor für mich eine ästhetische Totalkatastrophe. Und nur am Rande: auch bzw. vor allem, wenn kontroverse Ansichten im Spiel sind, sollte man die äußern können, ohne gleich pauschal verurteilt zu werden. Dies als kleiner Denkanstoß über Kommunikations- und Diskussionskultur...

For example if you ask someone " How are you?" be prepared to hear how he really feels including all pains this person might have. We are not at all in useless talks. If you don't want to hear the complete story don't ask.
