The Bayeux Tapestry was created in the late 11th century to show the events of the Norman Conquest of England in 1066. The designer also included little details that might be missed by the casual viewer. Here are 10 images you need to take a second look at. Read more about them at www.medievalist...

Wow, this makes the tapestry a very truthful, realistic and sensible depiction of human life at the Middle Ages.

How about the Tapestry time stamps the battle? The Tapestry also suggests there were two main engagements. The last 10 scenes (from Normans advancing to battle) can be divided into 4 distinct times ( 09:00, 12:00, 15:00 and 18:00) suggesting two engagements ( initial skirmish with Huscarls followed by main fight with King Harold). Scene 58 gives location of William of Poitiers's main body - ridge near Battle Golf Course.

Turold is not the dwarf, he’s the messenger in red. Why would they write a jesters name in the tapestry…

The strangest scene for me is just after William lands and he's feasting on 'fish' at a table with Odo in the centre. On the left (as you view) there is a bearded man who is reaching for what looks like a plate of gold coins. A servant on the right is pinching his nose & pointing to a fish on the plate. Could this reference to the anonymous (bearded) man be a reference to Harald Hardrada or someone who betrayed King Harold 11 ? Who is this character ?

What's the story behind the mockery of count Guy?

Guy was an ongoing enemy of Duke William, so the designer of the tapestry took several digs at him - see www.medievalists.net/2013/05/the-garments-of-guy-in-the-bayeux-tapestry/
