What about Cleo being a Soviet spy? She shows up in Paris and gets Beth drunk just before her game against Borgov. When Townes shows up in Moscow he speculates the Soviets fasttracked his visa application because they figured he'd distract Beth. This implies they knew about Beth's feelings for Townes, something she only told one person from the entire lineup of characters: Cleo. What is more, Cleo had previously had a suspiciously serendipitous first encounter with Benny's chess group and instantly started a relationship with Benny, who was the US champion and about to challenge the Soviets at the time. 100% Cleo was a Russian honeypot.

Oh shit. I also felt something was off about her, and fully expected something fishy to come out of her, but it never came. They constantly implied that Russians play dirty (for example the guy who joined her as a bodyguard of sorts made it a huge deal, which appeared to not bear any fruit, until now you pointed out Cleo - it fits). I believe it.

The story is amazing. All Beth was ever looking for is a family. And when Jolene said that they are, Beth becomes more motivated than ever. She stopped the pills and drinking because she has a family to take care of. She now also listens. This is evident when the boys called her. This is not a chess story. This is a human story dealing with an exceptional gift.

These are either stretching coincidences or so obvious they're not exactly "easter eggs". Here' are some actual details just from my personal viewing. 1. Beltik played the Caro Kann defence vs Beth in their final match. First scene in the very next episode, we are introduced to Benny explaining why Caro Kann is terrible - this is a subtle detail on how Benny is leagues ahead of Beltik. 2. When Beth is training with Benny in NY, on one of the boards you can clearly see the squares marked A-H and 1-8. This is a great historical detail as during that time descriptive notation (used throughout the show) was being phased out in favour of algebraic notation, so it makes sense they are marking their boards to learn the new notation quicker. In the final game with Borgov the little kid who rushing out to inform the crowd also uses algebraic notation and not descriptive. 3. In Paris when she was late for her match you can see various shots bottles place in line with the squares on a chess board, implying they have been playing shots chess, an actual drinking game. 4. Nona Gaprindashvili is mentioned in the Russian tournament and shown in the crowd. She is the only real life chess player actually depicted on screen - others like Spassky and Morphy are only mentioned. This is in line with the show's theme of female empowerment in chess. 5. In the simultaneous game vs the chess club, you can see Beth has the white piece on every board. This is again a real life detail and true to actual simultaneous exhibitions. If the boards had alternating colors, the exhibiter could make the other players play each other by mirroring moves.
@Holdit66
@Holdit66 3 жыл бұрын
Regarding #2: Algebraic notation was in use by the non-English-speaking chess world long before it took hold in the US and UK, that's why the Russian kid called out the moves in that format.

It probably shows that she has been keeping up her Russian studies!
@maddiethemadovich
@maddiethemadovich 3 жыл бұрын
I might assume that's how it is because the phrase "сыграем" is actually easier to pronounce without an accent, because it has less syllables, thus less unstressed vowels (especially unstressed "o"'s that sound more like "ah" but not really - it even has its scientific term "schwa"), thus less places to screw it up

My favourite trope is found family, and when Joline came to see her and later boys all got together and called her to help I started crying so bad. They are her family. Beth and the boys + Beth and Joline.

The pills are green-white because it was a photography decision to give the film a 2-tone Orange / Teal color scheme. Orange being since Anya had the brilliant idea that Beth ought to a read head, counter to the novel where she has dark hair.

The pills are green because they are based on Librium, a common tranquilizer in the 50s and 60s. Librium was two-toned green just like that.

Does anyone think like i do, that at the start of the series, Beths real mother, driving that car fast, after she has had a big argument with her ex , intends to kill both herself and Beth, by driving into that truck head on, and thats why she tells Beth to close her eyes ? The book is different, her mother is killed in a crash, but she was not with her in the car.

I love how in the first episode, when she takes the green pill (Librium) for the first time, she feels very drowsy and accidentally burns her hand on the radiator, to me that was great foreshadowing!

@Bia L it is a conspiracy theory that says we are not 2020 but +or - 1200. To them Mohamed, Caesar and Alexander the great are the same person but the western villains have repeated their stories with different names for... Well, we don't know why... There is no explanation for why. And their only argument is that between the year 476 and 1200 there is very little text that we have remained selling from the West (but not from the Arab, Indian or Chinese kingdoms)

Seems like she sat down to play because she was invited to. It could have been anyone of the old men, who tended to all look alike(?), anyway. When she got out of the car, she knew where she was and where she was heading on her walk, to the park with the old men playing chess.

Another thing I noticed was the sizing of the chess pieces on the ceiling when Beth hallucinates. They're all one size when Beth first learns chess as her sole interest is chess but when she starts showing interest in the opposite sex and intimacy, we see a singular chess piece grow larger and overshadows Beth. This illustrates phallic symbolism, showcasing that Beth is growing into a woman and the male-centred industry she's in. This is just what I took but the fact that the chess piece was also the King kind of adds to my initial thoughts.

The first one is too forced, Shaibel just taught her that way in their first matches, and in her final match against Borgov, it's just more realistic if she wins playing white.

I saw the number one and it's quite stupid. She played black in her first game and white in her game against Borgov. Well, there are only two colours so what are the odds. I don't see anything special in that.

I think a better detail would be that when she first sees Mr. Shaibel playing chess, he's playing the Queen's Gambit against himself and she uses it to win her biggest game at the end.
@mine5584

In the beginning when she played against Mr. Shaibel, a chess player far superior to her at that time, he was playing white. And on her game against Borgov, she played white to hint that she was a superior player to Borgov
@ivayloivanov2921
@ivayloivanov2921 3 жыл бұрын
@@mine5584 no, I don't think that's it. It is all your interpretation and just because she won the last game doesn't mean she is better than Borgov not to say far superior player. Borgov played risky and untypical for him opening in the last game and the game they played was very competitive. They both had their chances. The games they played were real life games with some improvements done by the great Garry Kasparov.
@ivayloivanov2921
@ivayloivanov2921 3 жыл бұрын
@@Empressoftheflames yes, that is a better detail. To say that she played first black then white or the opposite is silly. There are only two colours so it is not a big coincidence if the colours match or they are opposite.

I haven’t noticed anyone talking about the chess piece that Borgov handed Harmon at the end of the match, before he hugged her. The State Dept. agent made a HUGE deal about the possibility of Borgov trying to slip her a secret communication, possibly during the game. She asked the agent what he could possibly slip her and he said ‘it could be anything’…LIKE A CHESS PIECE?!?
