This is wonderful news! We tried The Nose Tree years ago in 3rd grade but abandoned the program after a few weeks for ALL of the reasons you mention here. I LOVE all things IEW (we still use the writing program), but have switched to Analytical Grammar. It sounds as though IEW really heard parents' concerns and responded. Thank you for making this video!

We have been using Fix It Grammar for the last four years. We just started the new versions this week. We are loving all the changes you mentioned. The amount of each item needed to find at the top of the page makes it so my kids can work more independently. One thing I noticed that I wish they didn't include is the indent fix. If there is only one sentence, it's obvious where the indent/new paragraph starts. It would of been better if it was a question....Do you need to indent? The way it is now they don't really need to think it through .Is it a new time, setting or speaker?? The new version will tell you if there is one or two indents or it's just not listed if none.

I'm late to this party but we are looking into IEW next year and I'm wondering if Fix It Grammar and the Style & Structure would be enough? Like does Fix It Grammar teach them thorough grammar. I'm hoping between those 2 it will be a well rounded language arts program.

Yes fix it grammar is a complete program. The only other thing you would need to add in my opinion to fix it grammar and structure and style is literature for your kids to read.

I can't find the answer: does Fix It Grammer teach the parts of speech and sentences? Or is it practice after the adj, proposition, conjunction, etc?
@LifeintheMundane Жыл бұрын
So Fix it Grammar does teach what each of the parts of a peach are but it is designed to start in 4th ish grade so many students going into it already have some familiarity with the parts of speech. They do have great review flash cards though that kids can reference to refresh on if they forget.

Now I want to continue but have so many questions and doubts that sometimes I want to quit. I got curriculums for each grade and I fell is too much work; it takes all day to finish. I'm thinking I can use "Fix it Grammer" with the 3 of them and work all together.

I know this is a year old video, but I am once again revisiting FIG to see if it would be wise to re-introduce it to my oldest 2 kiddos. We stopped using it after finishing the old version of Robin Hood (old book 2), I went to a convention last year and got to flip through the new Robin Hood (new book 3 now) and I was puzzled by the drop in the vocabulary quality. I mean, it was noticeable that the richness that was there in the older version was watered down significantly. My kids were not interested in repeating the same story despite the vendor lady for IEW saying "Kids aren't really going to notice a story repeating itself, they rewatch movies and re read books all the time, they won't mind redoing it." My kids felt different so we just dropped it for the last year. Started doing Gather 'Round Homeschool units, which has everything but math included in them, and could include all 4 of my kids in the joy of learning together. Now, after a year of the older kids being in the middle school, I noticed that creative writing and lewrning to write a report for each unit was encouraged more than formal grammar taught consistently, so I am thinking if bringing this back. Is there a place to write the vocabulary word and definition in the student book at all? The test of the changes look like they have streamlined it all much more, just wondered your thoughts after using the new version for the last year. Love your content, its so helpful!
@LifeintheMundane Жыл бұрын
So I have my child write the word and definition on the top line above where they are supposed to rewrite their sentence for the day. I did notice a change in vocabulary but I believe it was just a shift to make room for more levels. As we continue to go up in levels I have seen the vocabulary difficulty continue to increase.

@LifeintheMundane2 жыл бұрын
First of all you can definitely do that. I did it with my second child and it worked. That being said the old version of nose tree is harder and moves at a more accelerated pace then the new one and so with a 3rd grader I would tend to start with the new version because it eases you into the concepts easier but if you money is a factor you could try the old version first.
