Here's another very common mistake. I learned this one 30 yrs ago from my cousin who is a mechanic. Most people, when parking, put their car in park and then set the parking brake. When you take your foot off the brake pedal, you will notice the car will move a little before it stops. This puts tension on the Transmission gears and shift lever. Over time, you could run the risk of not being able to shift out of park. Instead, put the car in Neutral, set the parking brake. Take foot off brake pedal. Once the car comes to a complete stop, then put it into Park.

Ideally you should use the parking break no matter how you park. Especially if you parallel park a lot. It's a good idea just in case someone loses control and slams into the front or back of your car so that force isn't transferred to the parking mechanism. Another thing you can do for those who don't use them. If your on a small incline, we know that quite often the car rolls just a bit when put in park. That's because of the slop in the transmission since the breaks have nothing to do with the transmission. It has nothing to do with the parking mechanism. We know that quite often when we stop on a hill depending on which way you were going when going down the hill that we tend to get the bouncing effect. This is why things in the transmission tends to get damaged. To stop this bouncing effect from happening, put the gear selector in the opposite gear from the direction you were going and down on the hill. You've probably noticed that when you were going forward up a hill, the car doesn't bounce or up the hill in reverse. For example, if you go forward into a parking space that's going downhill, put your car in reverse for a moment until reverse engages. Then shift to park. Likewise, if you back into a space going down hill, shift into drive until it engages, then shift to park. This will stop or lessen the bouncing effect you get when parking on a hill. This works because by going into the opposite gear allows the transmission to tighten up to the uphill direction thus preventing the car from rolling in the opposite direction. But by chance you do get stuck in park, all you need to do is find someone with a bumper that'll line up with yours to slightly push the car forward just enough to take the pressure off of the parking mechanism. This will then allow you to shift out of park. If you can get enough people to push just slightly would work too.

#9 Tire Pressure: Pretty much any modern car has a Tire Pressure Monitoring System, or TPMS. These are special detectors installed in with your tires and will trigger a low tire light on the dash. Just don't ignore the warning. If it keeps coming back on after adding air to your tires, there may be a slow leak in at least one of them.

You don't need to "warm up" a modern day engine anymore BUT you should let it idle anywhere between 10-30 seconds before driving so that the oil pump can pump the oil to every part of the engine before you go. Also if it's really cold outside, you actually should let it idle and warm up a little bit because going over 3k rpms on a cold engine isn't good for it and cold temperatures make the oil thicker
@ryans4134 жыл бұрын

Heres one you missed, this one applies to mainly older cars but still good to think twice about. Starting your car to warm it up in winter is a good practice for any car however, a few years ago my neighbor had her car stolen from her driveway because she had started it with the keys. What i did to avoid this problem is i had a keyless entry and alarm system with remote start installed on my car and so far it has been worth every penny but if you don't want to spend that kind of money you can simply get an extra key for your car and lock it after u start it however, a thief can still break the window and drive off with your car.

All of these things rely on one thing... they assume your transmission is electronically controlled. Older automatics (such as those made prior to about the late 80's) were mostly mechanical so some of these features may not be present, such as mechanisms to prevent you from going from drive to reverse while driving. Modern transmissions will prevent this because all commands go through a computer before being executed, and the car/power train computer will prevent some of these things from happening, but if you do this in an older automatic transmission it may very well let you do some of these things.
@miscellaneousstuff83626 жыл бұрын
Please make video on old, retro cars. Too much electronics with newer cars which makes you depend on services. That's why I love old timers. When driving an older vehicle like we have in family, it is best if the driver has mechanical skills. Even better would be a mechanic with driving skills! Our car can be started without battery. Most of the things can be fixed with insulating tape and a piece of wire. Leaks under the car is a good sign, usually when the old timer does not leak it means nothing is left in a car. Old timer gives problems but it never fails, new cars won't give you any problems but they fail you in worse possible moment. Sometimes we ended driving old car with two cylinders, sometimes with no light but we always made it home. The only problem is to find car service who still remembers how to operate with a wrench and hammer. When we bring this car to service they beg us to send for a priest, to say -dust to dust to this car. My Grandpa tell them no way, guys, this car has been on the road for over 50 years and will be for another 50.

Another reason for #7. A mechanic told me when my fuel pump went out. The pumps are submersible. They rely on being under gas to run cool. Unfortunately, finding a car with a manual transmission is getting really hard. The last one I bought was a 2011 Ford Fusion, which was extremely rare, now unavailable. Every Corvette has the paddle shifter, which I do not count as a manual. One thing that really pisses me off is to read an ad that says "manual transmission" when it doesn't have a clutch. I'm sorry, but having the manual mode on an automatic transmission does not make it a manual transmission. Any transmission that uses hydraulic or electric power to shift is an automatic no matter what the liars tell us.

#2 only applies to tranismissions that are electronically controlled . Older transmissions may not have this feature. Some have a lock/prevention mechanism that will cause the transmission to slip (but not go into reverse) thus making a clicking noise. I know because I accidently put an older car (late 80's) into reverse accidently while moving forward and the trans just made a clicking noise.

About blind spots: There is a right and a wrong way to adjust your wing mirrors. You don't need to see the side of your own car in the wing mirrors. You do need to see vehicles coming up on your flank. Adjust your mirrors the way professional rally drivers do. Just as a vehicle disappears at the edge of your front mounted rear view mirror, it should become visible in your wing mirror. That means tilt your mirrors outwards. Unless you are very short so your seat is very far forward, your mirrors will most likely need to be adjusted outwards as far as they will go. Angling your mirror this way eliminates the so-called blind spot. Make it a practice never to linger in another driver's blind spot. You are vulnerable to any sudden lane change the other driver may make. Either slow a bit to drop back or speed up to pass the other vehicle quickly.

When backing up toward a wall, especially at night, [don't forget to] look in the rear view mirror and confirm that the brake lights all work. Exterior lights can be checked by turning them and the hazard warning lights on and walking around the car, but verifying that the brake lights all come on when they should is more difficult. A loose brake-pedal wire (happened to me) can go unnoticed until you get rear-ended. I identified the loose connection before any accident occurred, fortunately. Don't forget to learn whether the parking brake affects both rear wheels or just one. On an icy interstate highway, I tried to apply the parking brake to retain full front-wheel traction and slow down at the same time. I went for a spin--literally!--and smashed up the car pretty badly. No injury and no other vehicles were hit. It was a heavily insured rental. I got off easy.

Number 7 is slightly wrong. Running low on gas won’t hurt the cat, but can damage the fuel system (pump, injectors). Really the only two things that commonly damage a cat are rust and the car over-fueling. Rust is obvious enough, but over-fueling can melt the precious metals inside. Running low on gas could potentially clog it in theory, but chances are the injectors would go first because of the large particles. Great video and great channel.

A few extra pointers: 1. If theres any contamination in the gas tank its gonna get into your fuel system anyway because its drawn from the bottom. 2. Never attempt to start a car that is out of gas. Especially if its a modern one. Modern cars have electric pumps in the tank and a lack of liquid gasoline leads to the pump frying itself due to lack of lubercation. 3. Don't ignore leaks of any kind for too long. In old cars a drop or two on the floor every now and then is normal, but if you see it gushing out, dont drive it. 4. Don't freak out about a check engine light. If it comes on and stays solid its usually no big deal. If it flashes, then its a serious problem. And some OBD2 scan tools are cheap and can tell you exactly what's wrong and how to fix it. Those will work from 1996-present day. 5. Don't ignore strange noises. Its trying to tell you something. 6. Dont run it hard until it warms up.

Don’t shift from Reverse to Drive or Drive to Reverse until the car has come to a complete and total stop. If you don’t stop completely You’ll be using the clutch pack inside the transmission that changes the gears as a brake which will wear it out prematurely and cause it to slip and not want to go in reverse. Don’t force more gas into your tank after the gas pump stops. Overfilling the tank can force gasoline down the filler neck vent tube and into the charcoal filter canister. The gasoline will eventually destroy the filter material in the canister and allow air into the fuel system making your “Check Engine” light come on and give you an “Evap” code. Don’t ever drive though deep water because water can make its way into your transmission through a small vent tube that is on top of it and destroy it. Don’t ever mix up positive and negative when you jump start your car. Your battery is 12 volts with a negative body ground. Many of computers in your car run on only +5 volts and have resistors on the + side to reduce the incoming voltage but they share a common - body ground. If you attach +12 volts to the negative ground you will force +12 volts into those 5 volt electronics through the grounded side and fry them.

Never try to roll a joint while driving on city streets, wait until you get on the interstate and up to full speed. It'll be a lot easier and safer that way.

If you're low on blinker fluid and there's no auto parts retailer nearby, you can solve the problem by pouring a bucket of steam over your muffler bearings.

One thing to care is to change shifts when the motor needs not when you feel like , helps saving fuel and protects transmission and motor . It takes some time to do it right but worth it .Another one is the way you use the clutch and sincronize that move with acceleration .

A problem with overfilling the oil is that the rotating crankshaft then works like a washing machine agitator or the blades in a kitchen blender. The oil in the oil pan is turned into a froth, and this aerated oil has ineffective lubricating qualities as the oil pump tries to push froth rather than liquid throughout the engine.

Some manufacturers phased out the "oil dipstick" on certain models, so that's not entirely true. They rely on oil life sensors and level sensors to determine how much oil is in the pan unfortunately.

I thought it was a good idea to teach my sister how to check her oil, since she only have it checked for her yearly maintenance "date" She also removed the LPG _(Natural Gass)_ tank, since she thinks it's scary to fill it. And here in The Netherlands LPG is about 20~30% of the regular price!

If you put the car in reverse while driving then chances are you’re grinding your transmission gears into bits of metal and putting it on park while driving then you’re not only grinding some of the gears but the breaks too.

Just two things I noticed in the video. 1) All cars have a dipstick to check your oil. That is not true. My 2018 Volvo XC60 T6 doesn’t have a dipstick. You cannot check your oil. The computer will let you know your oil level. 2) No one’s gets their “tires balanced”. They are made of rubber. You have the WHEELS balanced. I have never seen the lead weights, used for balancing, fastened to the rubber tire. My comments are only meant to not confuse new drivers/car owners.

on the topic of fuel fuel tank newer cars have fuel pumps installed in the fuel tank to keep them cool .Run fuel below a quarter tank exposes pump and cause pump to get hot. And tire pressure should always be checked when tires are cold,when checking hot air expands and will give you an incorrect reading.

I had someone come to the shop with engine troubles. I checked the oil to start things off to find black sludge and bits of metal. I ask “When was the last time you changed the oil” He said “Change what oil?” I ask “Do you know what a oil change is?” He said “No. Is it important?” I said “YES. How long have you had this car?” He said “Almost 2 years” I had nothing to say after that 😅 my hope in the human race dwindled that day
@ProAdi966 жыл бұрын
Well, my mechanic once told me that he had a customer with a golf that didn't have oil changed for 4 years... and somehow still was able to drive. The oil was then changed, and a month later the engine failed.
@hannahadkins97646 жыл бұрын
Check water level, especially in the summer. And don’t check it right after driving because you can burn your hand.wait about 30 minutes. In the winter use antifreeze because water alone expands when frozen and can cause damage.
@hannahadkins97646 жыл бұрын
You should keep all fluids in check. Oil, Radiator Fluid, Brake fluid, Windshield fluid, Transmission fluid, Power steering fluid, Air conditioning coolant. This will protect not only your car, but prevent you and others from getting into a wreck.
