Glitter&Coffee I watched A video from another gal who teaches labor classes at hospitals and she said that everyone has a different pain tolerance. Some people may want to have natural births but when they are that intense part of labor they change their minds and decide to have an epidural and it’s A-OK. Other people can tolerate the pain and can push through it. I was definitely one of those people who wanted a natural birth but in the end the pain was too much for me and the epidural was definitely a relief for me so that I could actually enjoy the birth. Of course epidurals have their own consequences and epidurals have stalled each of my births but in the long run everything worked out so I’m grateful.

Jennifer Wallace I agree. I had an unmedicated labor and delivery with my youngest. I was good until transition. Fear set in and then the pain felt worse I was scared I couldn’t do it. I was exhausted didn’t feel I was pushing right. A few months later my husband told me he thought I was dying. I thought that was funny. I had no clue he was thinking that during delivery. Currently 36weeks now and trying my best to not be nervous because I can remember how my last labor felt. I’m going to try for I medicated again but I will accept pain medication if I need rest.

I delivered my baby 9 days ago without pain medication but I had to be induced. I definitely used "these contractions are not stronger than me, they are me." I also used "my body knows exactly what it is doing or my body is doing exactly what it should be doing" Definitely wouldn't have thought of those without this video. My contractions never got to the unbearable state, just uncomfortable like any other cramp. I pushed my baby out and I didn't even have a clue I was so focused on the push. My husband had to tap my shoulder and tell my our baby is in the doctors arms and I was like what?! It was such an amazing first labor and delivery experience. Thank you for these tips in this video!!

My nurse, a very young lady just out of school was the most memorable part of my “precipitous”labor. Long story but I was already in L&D and getting discharged when my water suddenly broke and baby was born in a half hour. She suspected that baby was coming quickly when my water broke and I told her I had to use the bathroom. The resident doctor dismissed it and was hesitant to call the anesthesiologist because she didn’t think I was far enough in labor (my screams were seen as me being a drama queen). My nurse allowed me to squeeze her hands through the intense contractions since my husband wasn’t even there and I was not given an epidural. She called my OB in the middle of the night to rush in. I remember her putting a cold rag on my head. I just remember feeling terrible pain and feeling terrified and I’m so glad she was there for me.

My last birth was less than 2 hours and 4 hours after birth, I was up, had been to the bathroom, BEGGING for a shower and it totally freaked them out. They see prob 3-4 natural births a year and they had no idea how to deal with me walking around, eating, no sleep.

You REALLY can do it! I had no complications & labor helped me feel closer to my baby and my body. Ended up in a C-section, but that time spent laboring was NOT wasted 💕 She's 1yr old today & I love her just the same as the day she was born 😄 *Tip: Labor is painful but not suffering.* If you feel what you can describe as suffering (like, your heart hurts. trust me you'll know). Then ask for some relief. Baby's gonna come out today even if you take nap and some IV-meds or epidural. Stay blessed 🎁🎉

I’m very passionate about having my future children without an epidural if possible. My mom gave birth to my brother and I both unmedicated. When I was born, I came out in the breached position and inhaled a bunch of fluids. I had to kick and fight my way out of the birth canal. The doctor told my mom after I survived that it probably helped my chances of survival that I wasn’t exposed to the epidural medication, which probably would have sedated me and kept me from fighting my way out. I also 100% agree with the fact that we are literally made to give birth NATURALLY! We really don’t need all that pain medication. I’m not pregnant and never have been, but I like to learn for the future. Thanks for another super informative video!

I’ve been enjoying watching your videos. I am currently pregnant with our 8th child. I never had a birth plan, I never really put too much thought into what I will bring to the hospital. With that said I can’t believe it took me so long to actually educate myself about certain things that have become so important to me. My first 6 deliveries I had epidural. My last my 7th was all natural. My nurses didn’t believe I was truly was in labor! I wasn’t even fully admitted and my doctor walked in and they asked him why he was there so soon and he answered bc she delivers fast. I don’t know what happened but they had checked me so many times to the point I said stop touching me. It hurt so bad! Long story short I was 10 centimeters dilated. With all that said and done I was SO proud of myself for going through that naturally. After watching some of your videos and vlogs I know for sure I don’t want my water broke and I don’t want to be checked more than absolutely necessary. I almost fell for the fancy labor gowns and some other things and then I realized… who am I kidding! I don’t need those things. Thanks for all the tips!

my advice to any first time mamma who wants to labor and deliver without any medication, have your support person be firm on your behalf until you always get what you want because i got zero of the things i asked for and stated in my birth plan. My husband and i took the birthing class at the very hospital i delivered at and i was promised so many things that i got none of and frankly, i’m still upset about it even 14 months later. I was told i would have the option to have portable monitors so i wouldn’t be tied up to the wall, that didn’t happen, apparently according to the nurse i had “no one else is giving them up at this time” 3 hours after i kept asking for one. I couldn’t walk around the hallways like i was told i could, i couldn’t get in the already filled bath tub (which at home helped me tremendously and was looking forward to continuing my labor in the hospital bath tub), my nurse didn’t offer me any kind of laboring advice or different positions to try nor did she ever mention that i could be unhooked from the stationary wall monitor for a while every hour so i could walk around or get in the tub. During the birthing class i was told not to bring in my own exercise ball or peanut because they had plenty and would lend me one to use in labor.... then the midwife on call that was present during the pushing time, she made me start pushing early, at 9.5 cm, now i realize it might not seem like a big deal but to me it was, i pushed for 2.5 hours until she threatened with a c section which freaked me out enough to give one final push and finally my son was born. Then she cut the cord after a couple of minutes after i told her twice to wait until it stopped pulsing, she tossed my son almost over my shoulder and i could hardly see him not to mention he couldn’t find my breast. I have no idea who stitched me up or how many i received, no introduction or explanation even though i was fully alert and aware of the entire room (it took 4 months for my body to heal and the stitches to dissolve). I’m sharing my story to inform other moms of what can happen if you’re “nice” but not firm. And for any mommas out there considering the epidural as their main way of pain management, i ended up taking it after laboring in one spot for 6 hours-on the floor clutching my shoe!-i still experienced some pain toward the end before i started pushing which for me felt like intense menstrual cramping, also when my son came out i felt everything-the ring of fire does not get numbed by the epidural. So just be informed that even a perfectly executed epidural like the one i received will still leave you experiencing some pain, but at least it won’t be in addition to all the laboring pain. In conclusion, don’t believe everything the staff may tell you, always be clear and firm with exactly what you want because it’s your labor and your birth experience and you deserve to receive what you want! ❤️

I got an epidural, as a last ditch effort to avoid a csection after 26 hours of natural labor and only dilating to a five. Went from a five to a ten in an hour. I was not dilating until I got the epidural and believe that I would not have relaxed enough to dilate before they would have had to do a csection on me (due to the fact they didn't want me to be in labor any longer because my water broke prematurely and there was a risk of infection, which baby did end up having an infection and in the NICU). So maybe yes maybe every woman can have a baby without an epidural, however, maybe not everyone should. I am glad in the end I got one because in the end it helped me relax and dilate, and idk if I would have had to get a csection if I hadn't.

Thank you so much for calling it “unmedicated birth” and not “natural birth”. Now I’ve never had a baby but I feel that all birth (but especially all vaginal birth) is “natural” because your baby was made (by nature) to eventually come out of you and be birthed, whether that be with medication, without medication, or a c-section. I feel calling unmedicated birth “natural” is implying that any other form of giving birth is unnatural and so it is bad. This is very much shame-based language and can make cause some people to feel that they didn’t do it “right” because they used medication or needed a c-section. I really appreciate how you emphasized that however a person gives birth, they are amazing for growing a human and bringing a new life into the world!

I feel like during pregnancy and labor no one allowed me that control. Like you were talking about with #11 keep the control. I already gave up control of my pain and experience before I stepped into the hospital, first got Fentanyl and then a problematic epidural and never gave myself the chance to keep control over myself and my pain etc. This is such great advice and I am so excited to give it a real go for unmedicated birthing!

I am the worlds biggest wuss with pain and sickness. I didn’t have time to get the epidural with my 4th. I didn’t think I could do it. I screamed like I was dying and told the nurses to kill me. Then apologized after each contraction. The doctor said he could hear me in the parking lot. But here I am 18 months later. I wouldn’t choose it again, but I am glad I experienced it. It is empowering to think about because I didn’t have faith in myself that I could.

I just gave birth about 3 weeks ago, it was completely natural but not my choice. And I would like to say, everything I knew about labor and delivery was forgotten while contracting! I was also one of those woman who the did not follow the norms when it came to laboring. My contractions by the time of delivery were one after another with no break in between lasting 1.5 -2 minutes each 😳 I knew I needed to breath but I could not catch my breath! It was very intense but I made it through and I am very proud to have gone through it.

Breaking the water making things more intense is an understatement... I had my water broken at 5 cm and it was AWFUL. My contractions were very manageable beforehand but afterwards, I felt like my torso was on fire. It sounds dramatic, but that's what it felt like.

I've had 6 children so far. Four of my children I had natural births. I didn't use medication at all. Two of my children I didn't go to the hospital until the end and they were born within 30 minutes of arriving at the hospital. It is very possible to have natural births. I've had past labors last for many many hours and I still chose to not have any medication. I always walked through the contractions, until I couldn't walk anymore before the baby was born. It's easier being able to move around instead of staying in a bed. It's painful but so worth it. It's easier after labor if you had a natural labor, at least for me. My last one, I arrived at the hospital fully dilated and that was really painful. But it was so fast and I was so relieved. Until I realized I could have had the baby in the car or parking lot. I always go to the hospital and tell the nurses and doctors that I don't want them to ask me about medication. If I decide I need it, I will ask them. I make sure everyone reads my birth plan. I've never had any problems with the doctors or nurses. They have always been so supportive.

I had an epidural with my first and no epidural with my second. The contractions were worse with my first than with my second but I still regret getting the epidural. With my first I was in labor for 7 hours and spent 45 minutes pushing With my second I went to the hospital 2 hours after my contractions woke me up and I was at 9 cm! I had my baby girl an hour later after 5 pushes. I don't want any more babies, but if I do end up getting pregnant again I will definitely not be getting an epidural again.

I wish I had known all of the things you have covered in your videos / vlogs before my daughter was born... Almost 15 years ago! I had an epidural (b/c I've always been small... 5' 2" and we knew she was a big baby. 9 pounds & a few ounces. I was about 4-5 cm when we got to hospital. I labored for about two hours after water broke. After that hit 10 cm and I had to push. 20 minutes later she went into distress. About 5 people came running into the room, (Two to there for NICU to check her apgar) the other 3-4 nurses were there to "help the doc" and ME. He had told me she was big, so he did the episiotomy (and she tore me anyway... 4th degree!) that part was a given. He also had to use the vacuum, & a few others tools. I can't remember everything... because BABY! It took him *longer to sew me back up* than it did to push! Thank God for epidurals!!!😄

Birth plans are just a rough idea, nothing’s set in stone when it comes to birth (besides baby coming out) lol. I’m confident in myself and my body to do a natural birth but I cant 100% say yes or no to the epidural now because I’m not there yet and I simply don’t know how I will be feeling when I am there. I’m going to wait it out and if the time comes where I’m suffering than yes I will happily take advantage of the epidural! My birth plan is to have the baby (:

Felize Lastic That’s a good plan. I walked in with my first saying epidural please. I had been in labor past due for over a day. I just wasn’t dilating fast enough for them. I lived an hour away. I wasn’t going home. They had to induce me and planned the epidural afterwards. Once they induced me I dialed fully in one or two contractions. I was unable to get an epidural. I will never forget the nurse telling me to let her know when I felt I needed to push after she put the stuff in my IV. I told her I needed to. She said let me check you. Then very surprised she said, “don’t push or do anything I’m getting the doctor now.” I said, “So, about that epidural.” She said, “Oh sweetie, you’re not going to one. It’s to late.” I’m happy for it in retrospect! Now I know a lot about epidurals and don’t want one for my second who is coming soon. I told everyone I don’t want one, I did it once, and I can do it again. Plus I don’t want back pain lingering afterwards or a needle in my spine. I reserve the right to change my mind during labor and get one. Honestly, you barely remember the pain. You remember the moment they put your baby on your chest and you are so happy! They stitched me up afterwards I knew they were doing something but could barely feel it my body was in such a high seeing my baby.

I wish you were my labor and delivery nurse!! My first birthing was mentally traumatic for me mostly due to miscommunication/lack of communication from the nurses. I did have a couple really good nurses, so I'm not mad at them. Just could have gone very differently if they would actually answer my questions and explain what was happening instead of just saying "we have to wait to talk to your doctor" over and over again... Multiple stuff went down, but between the first one and then a horrible epidural experience with #2 I'm struggling with feeling terrified of doing it again this September...

@Liz Falk . Hi, this is what helped me: (1) *Describe the security measures of L&D?* Will my baby be in nursery? (2) *Can my husband stay overnight?* (3) *Are there medical students involved?* (How? Can we opt out?) (4) *Do you provide formula and/or a lactation consultant?* (5) *When can we bring outside food?* Everything else is usually mentioned and you kind of learn as you go in terms of pain relief, nurse visit frequency, "normal" recovery procedure. *Put yourself 1st and call if you need something: pacifier, trouble breathing, snack, anything* good luck mama ❤🎉

Epidural with my first that didn't take, no epidural with my second. I spent 85% of both my labors on my knees, with the head of the bed straight up, biting a wash cloth. Was it graceful? No, not in any way. But I liked my freedom of movement and after my second, seems like I healed and felt normal a lot quicker.

I had my first baby over 10 years ago - I was young - but I was told when I came in at 7cm that I COULD NOT have an epidural. They said they don't give them at or after 7cm. I arrived at 11:45pm ish and had her at 12:22am. I don't recall them saying I was crowning at that time - but I find it odd being older (from research and your videos) that I was told I COULD NOT have an epidural... they also had to break my water... I'm 27 now and due in Dec - either times have changed or I was treated indifferent due to my age... :( I find that I'm learning much more online rather than in office...

When I was in labor with my 3rd, there were two nurses attending me mainly (there were more people in the room though). One was young and very sweet and gentle, the other was more "mean" (she wasn't mean) and I remember I pushed the nice one away and pointed to the "mean" one and was like YOU! I NEED YOU HERE! YOU TELL ME LIKE IT IS. Later my husband said I was really mean with the nice one when I pushed her away. I had no idea lol but I still feel bad about it! I think I just like people who are to the point and don't sugarcoat things.

Other people had me terrified of pitocin.. they said things like, "If you get pitocin your labor will be so intense you will HAVE to get an epidural!" So when my doctor recommended it because my contractions were slowing down I was initially like "no way!!" Lol. But he let me think about it and make the decision. I agreed to the lowest dose about 45 mins later and oh boy did that kick everything into hyperdrive because baby was born about 2 hours after that and nobody was prepared 😂 pushing phase was non-existent for me lol I'm pregnant again with baby #3 and hoping it goes that quick again cause that was amazing. I love unmedicated birthing because I can get up and shower right after hahaha

My first birth i got the epidural becausehonestly i felt discouraged and pressure fron my midwife she was like “ooooh those contractionsmust be really painful, you should get epidural” and she ask me again and again so i ended up saying yes to it 😞 i got an allergic reaction. But at the end i got to deliver my baby after my ob had told me that i was “tight” so i should get a csection. Worst dr ever. In pregnant for the second time and this time i will ask how you said and get as much info i can. 👊

I have no clue why this was recommended to me, but I had two unmedicated births. One was a c section that other a home VBAC- cause the first was an unmedicated c section. Fun fact, neither killed me (obviously) but the VBAC was sure as heck more enjoyable. I didn’t scream or carry on during either (don’t ask how, I don’t know) but as far as being “graceful” goes, I think I managed quite nicely second time around. Maybe cause anything was better than the first time? But bottom line, giving birth without meds can be done and it’s not that bad- if it’s a vaginal birth.

I never wanted an epidural, but had to be induced with my first due to preeclampsia. They had maxed me out on all BP meds and it was going up with every contraction, over 200/100. So they gave me the epidural which only half worked because it turned out they gave me a spinal fluid leak. Every bolus gave me maybe a few minutes of relief before screaming hot knives came back. My entire body was in pain. I shook uncontrollably and violently for 12 hours. That was almost 3 years ago and now I have #2 on the way. Hoping I can make it through without another sh*t show. Let's see!
