Umm but there is a such thing as an elephant graveyard. They dont go there to die purposely but its an area in an african elephant's voyage to ancient watering holes that once was a utopia but has dried up and vanished. Many are so tired when they make it there that they can't go on any longer ( mostly the babies and old) so they just lay over and die there. But elephants instincts keep taking them to that place on their long journey and so the cycle repeats.

IF you're going to count the reimagining of the Hercules story as a mistake then you need to count the reimagining of all of the stories as mistakes too. For example the original story of Aladdin takes place in China. The muses even mention the story we know of Hercules isn't accurate and they're going to tell us the "real story" being the first one to acknowledge that they are flat out reimagining the story.

Most of these feel like nitpicking. You guys ever read Greek myths? Not kid-friendly stuff, exactly. Also there are like a gazillion versions of them. Also the waltz in Sleeping Beauty? A fairy tale movie where the protagonist is cursed by an evil fairy? Yeeeeah not the place where I'd go looking for historical accuracy. I say this as a history major. (I agree on Pocahontas though)
@leinthstorm78276 жыл бұрын
exactly, and sleeping beauty cut herself on flax not a spindle, and the prince who saves her is actually a king who raped her, .. Don't think it would be a hit in kids films, same with the film tangled, the rescuer gets pushed from the tower, he falls into thorns and his eyes get impaled, he ends up wandering the forest blind to find Rapunzel when he hears her voice. I'm a huge fan on Greek myth, I tend to stay away from Greek based films because they make me cringe...
@trekadouble7576 жыл бұрын
I agree that there are a lot of different versions of Greek myths, but you need to consider that not all the version were as know in antiquity. There's always one version that is "canon", and other particular versions that are either particular for a region, for a period of time (Scylla in homer= hellenistic and roman Scylla), or even for a specific author. I say this as a latin and Greek philologist, so I study latin and Greek literature in University, and what we see in philology class about myths is different from what you'll see in history lessons and I would say when it comes to mythology and legends philologist are better specialists than historians, unless said historians specialise in mythology specifically. Also we shouldn't forget that some other authors, even antic authors, seem to have alter traditional myths as they wished to make them fit their own universe, so for me it isn't a problem to change myths a bit to make them fit our universe, but I think Disney went too far on this one and they could have just created a hero since their Hercules is so much more different than the canon Hercules. And yes there are not kid stuff, it doesn't mean it's impossible to create a version that is more kid friendly, sometimes to make things kid friendly you just have to watch the way you tell the story and not even the content of it.

It's a movie and an animation at that. When they make a movie, the writer rewrites the story to appease to the audience, in this case, children. Then when movies get something to close to the truth they get sued by the subject or families of the subject. And finally, yes, we can't have historical inaccuracies on myths, that's a sin. If Disney did all of their movies based on the original stories they would all be rated "R".
@finaoo11676 жыл бұрын
"Reindeers" is a less common, but perfectly acceptable plural for "reindeer". True. Prince Adam's portrait looks older than 11, but it's a painting, not a photograph, so maybe the artist made him look older than he was. My question has always been: where are his parents? If they're dead, why is he a prince and not a king? You're talking about Hercules as if he actually existed.
@candiedcockroaches6 жыл бұрын
Plus, the Reindeers part was just to make the song sound.. well, fitting for the character.

@@dhhshdjw_455 what the problem with his name? If we go on on that, stop saying Zeus, Hera, Hercules, Megara, and Hades, I'll ask you to say Ζευς, Ηρα, Ηρακλής, Μεγαρα, Αιδης (with the correct accents that I can't put here because I lack and ancient Greek keyboard). Hercules is Herakles name, just like Ulysse is the French version of the Greek name Odysseus. For your information, in Latin text from the middle ages, a lot of the French kings we name "Charles" and "Louis" and "Jean" today are named "Karolus" and "Ludwig" and "Jean" in Latin. The well known "Charlemagne" is also "Karolus Magnus" in Latin. It's just that we translate thing and that we sometimes loose things in translation, and that is even more true about ancient name because time did a lot of work on them. So I ask you, why is it wrong to call Herakles by another version of his name, Hercules, when it's ok to call Karolus Magnus "Charlemagne", someone that is also a real person while the other is a myth?
@trekadouble7576 жыл бұрын
@@dhhshdjw_455 why are you talking about reading the name? This is a movie,we don't read the name we hear them, so the way it's written is not relevant here, only the way we here it, and Zeus is not the same as Ζευς. I agree it's strange that they chose the Roman name for Hercules and the Greek name for the other gods, but this is just ridiculous to talk about it like nobody ever changes name in different languages. Also, Hercules is the name we currently use the most in English, and also in French. So consider parents who want to buy a movie for their children, they don't always know who Heracles is, but if the name is "Hercules", they'll know, it's just that Herakles isn't the name we currently use the most and when you make movies you have to consider what people know or don't know. I mean ancient Greek knew it and they would have used that name too for jokes or plays if it was needed
@trekadouble7576 жыл бұрын
@@dhhshdjw_455 also as I just checked, the modern Greek name for this movie is Ηρακλής, they simply use the most common name people know and people will be able to recognise. I don't see any problem with this, in every language on this planet we use our own version of foreign name or words just because it's easier for us, I don't see how people who say name from foreign brands and people wrong everyday can be upset about this, it's not a big deal and ancient Greek people probably wouldn't care

@maddiemelody90016 жыл бұрын
It was because, even though the story line got disneyfied like a lot of other tragedies that turned into comedies when Disney took them over, it takes place in Greece. Meaning his name should have been Heracles instead of Hercules. It only got changed into Hercules when the story traveled over to Rome.
@BeeWhistler6 жыл бұрын
I can't blame them for making the changes to Hercules. They weren't exactly going for accuracy in it and Greek mythology is raunchy. And I have to add that there was no true story of Hercules as you said, technically. Oh, and another problem or two with Frozen... they crowbarred in all those irritating songs instead of developing the plot and characters, and it would have been nice if this magic was explained ever at all... what's up with the ice powers... how is there suddenly an actual sentient Olaf... what the crap is with the rock trolls? And what is Elsa gonna eat in the ice castle?
@GlitterBomb-wn1uw6 жыл бұрын
And why can Elsa hide her powers in gloves but not shoes? Her room’s floor should have been made of ice...
@trekadouble7576 жыл бұрын
I will disagree about the fact that there's not real story of Heracles. It's true that in Greek mythology there is always a few different versions from the same myth, but even though stories changed depending on the area, the city, or the author, ancient Greek and Latin still knew which versions were the most known and the most common. They knew their stories and their myths and knew the most known version, and because they knew the common version, they could understand what the authors who wrote about those stories where trying to say (if they were ironical, satirical, religious, elogious, etc). You shouldn't think myths are just some stories that have a bunch of versions and everyone could choose the one they wanted. It kinda worked like that at some point but people knew the different versions of the story and they knew which were common an which were particular to their own city or family or else. So about Hercules, even though sometimes Hercules is more serious, sometimes he is just a stupid fool who likes to drinks and beat people up, people still knew his story was to be the guy who had to do twelve jobs because he killed his wife because of Hera.

About Pocahontas, it may be true but I don't think there is any film that is based on a true story and is actually accurate (and in such an old story, no one can actually tell what really happen. , it shouldn't be no.1
@flourishinspire75285 жыл бұрын
It really does deserve to be number one because the true story is that Pocahontas was a child, she was basically kidnapped and paraded around Europe as a "tamed savage" before she died of European disease, and John Smith was a lying scumbag and a con artist who stole food from the natives at gunpoint multiple times and incited all sorts of violence and then went home and wrote about what a dashing hero he was and once Pocahontas was famous he said "oh yeah she totally threw herself at me naked when I was over there" despite the fact that she was a CHILD and they had zero relationship at all. The whole event that Disney paints as this love story actually resulted in the deaths of huge amounts of Native Americans and portraying it in the way they did is actually damaging. It is not "such an old story we don't know what happened" : we have actual documents and letters from that time and Disney refused the input of the actual Powhatan people which are STILL ALIVE. I realize you probably don't know all this, and I know as a child I loved the movie but please do look up the truth. I'm sure there's plenty of youtube videos that would show you.

Ok. I have found several problems with this review. I am an animation major and am currently doing art for a local gaming company in MO. I have studied and researched many things behind the disney animation and some things you have pointed out are not mistakes, but were actually chosen to be left out on purpose. 1. Aladdin's shirtless visage was left nippleless on purpose, because the nipples would be distracting to the viewer when looking on the main character. King Tritan was not a main character, but a sub character and doesn't share hours of your attention on the screen. Hercules was done in a completely different art style than Aladdin, allowing more detail to be shown throughout the whole movie with more recent technologies, so giving the animation a completely different look. (This is why Don Bleuth left Disney.) 2. An artist can draw the beast before the transformation to look older than 11 (the age when he turned) due to allowing the audience a sneak peek at the possibility of who the beast could be, not who he once was. So, the portrait could reflect who Belle saw on the inside, and not a young boy before he became a monster. 3. The singing ladies in hercules, even though there were supposed to be 9 more of them according to legend, would have been too much of a hassle to animate for the artists, and the 5 of them chosen worked perfectly without overcrowding. 6. Elephant graveyards do exist because elephants actually have a long memory and when they wander off alone, they are actually traveling there, where they remember that "this is where I am supposed to go". Elephants actually respect where elephant bones are laid, and will attack if the grave is violated. 7. Gustav singing reindeers wrong is actually not. It is up to the freedom of the songwriter to stretch grammar to fit the song. It is a technique used widely throughout music. 8. You think sleeping beauty dancing with her prince is wrong, well then you are nitpicking the lightest innuendo in DISNEY HISTORY. Thank you for your time.

Just because Kristoff spends all his time around an actual reindeer doesn’t mean he’ll know the proper plural term for them. In the beginning of the movie, it shows Kristoff as a young child beginning to “harvest” ice and was most likely in that field of work all his life, so obviously he made little or no effort to pursue a proper education. You can’t expect him to know something as miniscule as that. Also, 11:05 “historical history that actually happened” isn’t that what history is? something that actually happened? and saying historical history is like saying “a round circle”

@peytonfields45776 жыл бұрын
I agree with a lot of the people saying that the Hercules change isn't a mistake. In original Greek mythology, Hercules (or Heracles, which wasn't his real name either. In myths I've read, he was born as Alcides or Alcaeus) was born to a mortal woman named Alcmene. He had a twin brother, though his twin did not share the godly father, Zeus. The twin, Iphicles', father was named Amphitryon. Alcaeus/Alcides got a new name, Heracles, after killing two poisonous snakes sent by Hera to kill him. This name means "Glory from Hera." Growing up, Heracles wasn't the noble and heroic teenager he is in the Disney movie. He was charged for murder before he turned 15, and to add to that, killed his entire family in a rage as an adult. Some stories say Hera inflicted him with madness when he killed his wife and children, but he was known to be short tempered. The only family member that escaped was his nephew, Iolaus, who managed to snap him out of his anger. There is a lot more to Heracles' story, but just from knowing this much it's obvious why Disney changed the myth to a more family friendly story. Though I see the mythological version to be more entertaining, Hercules is still one of my favorite Disney movies, next to The Lion King and Aladdin.

For all the grief Pocahontas gets, you have to understand this was a huge step from the way Hollywood had portrayed native people in the many decades prior. It is part of what I call the 90s turnaround, an era where you had several very highly acclaimed films being made, as well as music CDs such as Sacred Spirit, that finally reflected an overall positive view on Native Americans. The complete antithesis of how the American Indian was portrayed in the John Wayne and Chuck Heston days. We went from being portrayed as mindless savages hacking away at innocent whites any chance we got to a warm people, who lived upon Earth knowing She is our mother and is a living being, living freely for the day and for our own family and our people. The only problem that has resulted from that turnaround is a new stereotype, that we were all hippies who were at such perfect harmony with the Earth that we literally spoke to nature and nature talked back, and the New Age flim-flammers have capitalised heavily on this stereotype. Nevertheless, I will always think of Disney's Pocahontas fondly for its artistic achievements, the involvement of activists Russell Means, Irene Bedard and Gordon Tootoosis and others, its overall positive portrayal of native communities, and for being the first major Hollywood film to have the balls to start telling the truth - the first scenes from Virginia Company to Steady as the Beating Drum reveal to us straight away that the arrival of the white man in the so-called "New World" was an act of planned INVASION for their own gain, and that the white man never wanted peace with the "savages", who were not so savage at all, but instead a people who already had everything they needed. Communicating a story of genocide through a film aimed at children was a risky move on Disney's part, but they were subtle enough to pull it off. Russell Means said it overwhelmed him that Disney were the ones finally trying to tell the overall truth, and that people worrying about every little factual detail they got wrong were "missing the point" of what the project represented. I can't argue with that, and you have to admit, seeing the colonists singing about "killing Injuns" on board the ship immediately contrasted against the prayer-like "Steady as the Beating Drum" is an incredibly moving piece of cinema.

Disney snapped it up, I was expecting a tribute or a thanks to him.. but nothing, they going to steal Astro boy from him too? During interveiws they said 'Lion king was based off Bambi, it has no resemblance to Kimba'... riiiggghhhtttt

I think the biggest mistakes are: 1) Princesses are all pretty 2) They are all thin 3) They are poor (in the beginning) 4) They think being rich will bring them happiness 5) They dislike the provincial life 6) They are young. It'd be ok to find a princess locked in a castle at the age of 40 or 50 7) They are shallow, they look for a young, good looking prince. What if he was an ugly old prince ? 8) All princess know how to sing. In reality, princess in real life have no talents. 9) The villain are usually old people. 10) The villain are ugly. The villain could also be as beautiful or even more beautiful than the actual princess.
