Most Formula 1 rule changes take place between seasons, but occasionally circumstances force the rulemakers' hands into taking action during an ongoing campaign. In this video we've chosen 10 of the biggest rule changes that were made during the season, and explained why the FIA and/or the teams felt they couldn't wait for the winter in those cases.

@@AmokCanuck I have no clue what you mean. The mass damper was a genius innovation and fully legal to the letter of the regulations. The ban was shoehorned in by way of claiming it as a "moveable aerodynamic device" which was by no means its primary purpose, nor is it really an accurate description of the device. Whether or not it allowed for a different aerodynamic setup to be run is irrelevant in my opinion, because the same is true for many other components (such as those of the suspension).

Technically, according to the mass damper ban, an engine should be cataloged as a movable aerodynamic device.
@paultapper9388

The steering wheel moves and affects the car's aerodynamics, so that should be banned too! Given that pretty much every moving part on an F1 car affects the aerodynamics, this is basically an absurd rule that allows the FIA to instantly ban anything they don't like. Even more absurd, is that the movable aerodynamic device rule was originally introduced to stop teams feathering wings on the straights to reduce drag. So the thing it was intended to stop is now specifically permitted, i.e. DRS.

@kilerscn
@kilerscn 3 жыл бұрын
@@paultapper9388 Not only that but the teams also skirt the FIAs tests on the wings to negate the rule too. The FIA tests the wings to withstand certain forces so they don't move, except the teams layer the carbon fibre in a way in which it will pass the FIAs tests but will actually move when in race conditions. This means that the higher speed the car goes the flatter the wings become, reducing drag and allowing higher top speeds but in breaking the wings flex back to a steeper profile, producing more downforce.

Bhosadike that would be fun. I would like to see teams given more freedom in things like engine revs. If a back-marker or midfield team could run their engine harder, that would give them a chance of great results that could change their fortunes, but it would run the risk of engine penalties later in the year. I would love to see more leniency in the rules of body work structure because the current: "MUST BE MADE TO/BY RESTRCTED MESUREMENTS" limits teams far too much leading to far too many cars on the grid looking the same and only livery to determine which car is by which team. I understand that safety is paramount and must come first but surely there is scope for advancing this area in the future. I'd say reintroduce the following things: - The team radio limit - The mass damper - Traction control, but for rain races *only* The other ones I wouldn't bring back. Either they look ridiculous or are genuine moving parts.
@AntiVaganza
@AntiVaganza 3 жыл бұрын
I can't agree on traction control for rain races - rain is when we see certain drivers exhibit more of a special skill. With traction control, it would reduce the impact of that skill which is hardly fair. I am all for making the cars more even and can't wait f0r 2022 but driver skill should always be awarded .

@@HighFlyingOwlOfMinerva In my eyes, there are plenty of overtakes and risks in rain races, normally and I like to see the less skilled mess up. But let's just agree to disagree on this one:)

The mass damper ban seems poorly justified. The mass damper moves, sure, but the aerodynamic effect the car gets from it is more about the downforce that isn't lost when it rolls over a bump. The aerodynamic elements of the car (front and rear wing, diffuser, etc.) aren't changing in response to the mass damper, the mass damper just makes the aero elements more efficient (since they have less variation in vertical load so airflow over the car remains more stable). Maybe I don't understand the rule against movable aerodynamic devices but at least by the sound of the rule title I feel like that's targeting things like rudders or flaps (like you'd find on a plane) that allow the driver to modify the aerodynamic characteristics in real time to respond to the circuit and to create overtaking opportunities (heck, DRS is already kind of like this, it's just restricted to specific parts of the track). The F Duct seems closer to the intent of the rule (since it involved changing airflow in real time, it just relied on a rudimentary vent inside the cockpit that the driver would have to cover with their own body to function so the car itself wasn't changing its aero characteristics, the driver was simply modifying the way was able to pass around and through the car) and that wasn't even formally banned (the teams just decided to drop it, apparently due to "cost" reasons).

Probably to get up into cleaner air - away from the turbulence created by the car. It looks hedious but back then might have been more efficient.

I actually somewhat liked the staggered qualifying format, but it needed a different implementation. Instead of locking the lowest competitor in place, the lowest competitor gets shown the flag. The difference being that the competitor can finish his current lap, but not start another lap after that. That could mean that, if you hit the cutoff time as 20th, but you are on a fast lap, you can still get into Q2, if that fast lap is fast enough. But it is your final chance, no chances after that. That also decreases the front loading of the qualifying, as there is a larger number of cars still in competition at the end, even if it's their final chance.
