I love that you demonstrated by painting a person of colour. I've seen so many videos on watercolour portraits and skin tones and they all focus almost entirely on white/Caucasian and other light skin tones. I'm super pale and live in a really white community, so I need all the help I can get learning to paint diverse portraits.
@lizziedae91
@lizziedae91 4 жыл бұрын
Alex O'Neil I think its bc most people have a harder time mixing those pale tones. The tiny amount of pigment, the actual colors used, and the large amount of water all seem so counter intuitive.

I love the combination of loose hair, splatters and the super detailed face. I have a hard time with building up face layers. Halfway through there is always this ugly stage where it feels like you are failing so hard. Sometimes after a couple more layers and details it looks amazing, but not giving up in the middle or stopping while it's too light/not enough contrast can be a challenge!

@kadysousa5678
@kadysousa5678 3 жыл бұрын
That is my biggest issue. The ugly stage lol I have such a hard time not giving up. And even if you do mess up it’s almost never as bad as you think and can be fixed/improved. One of the best peices if advice I’ve heard from an artist was to finish the piece. Push through and finish even if you think it’s awful. It gives you the opportunity to fix it and learn and it gives you that little bit of extra time into the painting that eventually translates to experience. So guys, I know it’s hard to get past the ugly stage but just try pressing on. You might end up surprising yourself and the very worst possible outcome is still giving you experience to be better :)

@@nadines.1880 Yes, but then you've got to have top quality paper, or you'll risk ripping it in the pull off process. I am a newbie in watercolor painting. I bought the Hahnemühle Anniversary Aquarelle paper and although it was not cheap it was not good enough for using masking fluid. When I carefully tried to remove the masking fluid the paper got ripped. Many hours painting in vain with sheets of paper going down the drain = very annoying. Next time I'll buy the best paper no matter if it's really expensive.

YESSSSS KIRSTY. I also love that you featured a painting of a subject with melanin. It's so hard to find content/tutorials for brown and darker skintones who also have 'green/gold'/red/purple/blue undertones. There's only how-to's for olive/pink/cream tones with the undertone variation. That's great and everything but having an abundance of tuts for subjects with more melanin is so....needed. This piece is so so so beautiful.
