Hi Dale Once again an awesome video! I’ve passed all nine theoretical exams now. I wanted to know how much exam revision & prep time you put in for the FRTOL exam? Thanks once again

In terms of exam prep and revision, its pretty much as covered in the video. I did the Irv Lee Zoom course and that was probably an hour, then I spent the rest of the time reading CAP413 and then just trying to research what the exam would be like. I think by the end of your training (as I did mine at the end) you should be pretty confident with the RT, so just need to make sure you dont use any RT "slang" like pilots really use, vs what CAP413 states.

FWIW I did my FRTOL a few months ago, and the examiner used Skydemon's simulation mode to fly the route I'd planned at the start of the exam. I was in another room on a Zoom call so we could both see where the aircraft was and make the appropriate radio calls. It was all going well until the final approach to the destination airfield, where of course Skydemon doesn't follow any prescribed circuit but just plonks the aircraft down in the middle of the runway and yet you're expected to make the appropriate radio calls. It all worked out in the end, but having had the visual aid throughout the flight I found the switch to "finger on chart" mode at the end a little weird.

I had my watch on from memory, but only things you can take in is a pen, paper, current chart, ruler and then I asked for the paper clip.

Irv Lee's course is really good and bang up to date. Well worth it when you start Comms, the basics are made really clear, there are practical tips, and Irv offers a follow-up when you get near to taking the FRTOL

How do you know which frequencies to use along your route ? (Sorry if this was already mentioned in your video I may have missed it)

The frequencies are on your chart, so just as when you are flying normally you can see what areas you will be flying and the frequencies you may need to speak with. Also in your briefing you will be told to speak to X, Y, Z to request things also as part of the exercise.
