As an experienced photographer I already knew most of this stuff. That said I was very impressed with the high quality and completeness of this presentation! How anyone can remember all that info and present it as quickly, thoroughly, and flawlessly is simply beyond me. Job more than well done and I will highly recommend this site to my photography friends.

wow! ive learned a lot for this short video. this is a comprehensive tips for a tripod search. you should be teaching photography in big schools, recently i enrolled in a big university for photography certification and i learn nothing but political correctness rather than photography itself. what a way to waste time and money, i thought i will be sinking my head to the deep science of photography, i got nothing but BS. the school is one of the Ivy Leagues im so disappointed, since i already into this BS i need to finish it for certification for my new job. Your outstanding professorial lecture keep us small and starting photographer a chance in this wild world. Thanks a lot and more power and long life to you Sir.

Great introduction to tripods and their use. I don't use my tripod nearly enough, but when I do, the photos are noticably sharper. I am still using a heavy duty Gitzo tripod from the 1980s with a Graf-Studioball. This stuff just never wears out.

Very informative video, Joe! I found a Chinese brand called Leofoto, that makes an Amazing travel tripod, AND it includes a fantastic ball head with one feature that I've not found INCLUDED on any other ball head...namely, a panoramic head! This allows the single ball head to function as a pano head, plus, if you swing it into the notch, turns the pano head into a "poor man's " gimbal head! (Max payload = 22 lbs.) Also, another feature of this tripod/head combo, is that the knobs/controls on the ball head each have a different shape and texture (ALL metal, CNC aluminum)! Simply ingenious design, because it eliminates the possibility of inadvertently loosening the wrong knob!! Why ALL ball head manufacturers don't do this is beyond me...actually, probably because of design and manufacture costs! In any case, this Leofoto LN-254CT Tripod is awesome...10X carbon fiber legs, included quality metal spikes (with rubber gaskets), included handy carabiner allen tool, and a very nice carrying case. Well worth $380, IMHO. Thanks again ,Joe.

Hi Joe, I enjoy every one of your videos. Just to add a bit to what you have mentioned here. The load capacity, when someone get a tripod only (without the head), consider the weight of the head to be added as well. Specially those pan & tilt ones.

I started using a tripod in studio when I bought an 85mm; I was getting slightly blurry photos because of mild camera shake. Now they're MUCH sharper! I'm thinking about upgrading to an Oben model I didn't know about pointing one leg toward the model. Good advice!

Very good video. One of the most important specs that I personally look for on a tripod is its versatility. Not only how high it will go, but especially also how low it will go. IMO how low it will go is easily as important as how high it will go. Of course it does depend on your type of photography. A big problem of my first tripod was that it would never go as low as I wanted.

Hi Joe, new subscriber here. Came cross your channel recently, really like your video. Just wonder are you going to do videos on iPhone photography? I am looking for tripod for my iPhone for two purposes, to free my hands by holding the phone, & there is no place to attach/or grab a tripod? Any suggestions. Thank you

Thank you! Dale Brown Glad you enjoyed it! I don't think you need to go with mirror up unless you are using really slow shutter speeds to shoot.

you should do a follow up video just on tripod heads and the advantages and dis-advantages of the types. I am currently using manfroto heads and their CR2 plate but keep debating getting a different head and switching to arca swiss.

Thanks for your advice.Yesterday I was shooting a time lapse sequence. With a ND filter I had the shutter speed at 2 seconds (wanted the clouds to be a bit blury), with a time interval of 5 seconds. The pictures were sharp. I had not thought of using a mirror lock up for this kind of shutter speed. Having said that I always use mirror lock up at night or astrophotography. What shutter speed would you start thinking of using mirror lock up?
@theJoeEdelman6 жыл бұрын
There is no one size fits all for this Mark Jarrett. My philosophy is that if I am going to do a shot at slow shutter speeds on a tripod - I am going to take every possible precaution to insure sharpness. Fortunately with digital cameras we can determine the need with one quick test shot.
@theJoeEdelman6 жыл бұрын
Your thought process works dgevert - but I would not be willing to knowingly allow the motion to be corrected by the length of the exposure - if I know it's happening - better to correct for it in advance instead of risking the alternative.
@bridgettucek66965 жыл бұрын
Joe, do you know if any tripods exist that have markings on the legs so that you can easily adjust heights at even points on each of the legs - like a number system or lines etched into the legs? Wouldn’t that be user friendly?

It depends aadsideas. Their 5k model which is like $179.00 is designed for heavier DSLR's but it is also very short and not suitable for many situations.
