Idk I mean I can’t be this type of parent because God knows when Donkey Kong 64 collectibles were eluding me I had my mom buy me the prima strategy guide. I had the strategy guides to a few big games back then, but also those guides included art and developer secrets too so it was just more than just walkthroughs 😂

Honestly i could support the idea of such a rule, at least for a first playthrough. If i'd have kids who wanna go completionist they can use a guide for they can't figure out in the first playthrough, but other than that... i applaud the effort from that mom. I just hope she doesn't demand they go completionists without guides.

Number 10. Richard Russell. As a former ATC the conversation between him and air traffic control is heartbreaking. His comments about being "just a broken guy" and then saying he was going to attempt a barrel roll then nose down and call it a night ... those stay with me. Feel bad for the ATC who was talking with him. We got training in how to handle traumatic situations but ... well. Yeah. RIP sir.

I'm with the mom with the no guide rule on jrpgs. Alot of those games require you to really pay attention as to what's going on. Plenty of puzzles and problem solving. And helps develop memory since they don't always have a journal for quests. Good skills for kids to learn.

FWIW I am actually this kind of parent. Depends on the game but generally I push an anti-guide angle on my kids. Terraria for example is not reasonable, you need access to a guide

They survived because they have the knowledge to survive in the Amazon given by their community. Soo funny someone believed they survived because videogames LOL!

Yeah I just looked it up and what I found is that it's more due to exposure and culture. They were indigenous people and were raised in the rainforest and with survival knowhow that others wouldn't have.

As soon as Number 1 started I pointed it to that plane crash but... there's absolutely no way it was related to videogames. And it isn't. Also yeah anytime you pawn any console most shop make you try it out before they pay u. Not much to do with "video games". He was a ramp guy who knew more about Dash-8 than pilots themselves. He had a basic simulator at home with a proper software. He started aircraft all by himself, pushed back by himself, he managed to jump into moving(!) plane, close that door, taxi and take off and then did a barrel roll. He also knew how to use radios and a basic navigation. This you can't learn by playing a game as described in your comment and a video.

#5 I got an even better story. I worked on an Naval Air Station in Japan. We had 2 terminals (USA and Japan). The Japan terminal had a bunch of Old Japanese Armor w/weapons on display. On my day off the Japan terminal caught on fire and burned down. I was told the next day that during the fire, 2 Japanese military workers ran out of the burning building carrying a 50in TV. The Armor alone was worth over 1mil and they decide to save the TV.

Fuck man I remember being stuck on single puzzles for days as a kid. It definitely made a relatively short game a lot longer. I don't consider this weird at all. I would probably have some sort of middle ground thing like how I used to have to wait a month for the new gaming mag to drop for tips. I think this will actually help the kids at the end of the day. It will teach patience and a sense of accomplishments you don't get when you cheat and look things up.

Guides are pretty much mandatory for learning the mechanics of Dwarf Fortress, especially the ASCII version Hollow Knight on the other hand only requires the compass and some patience

My personal rule is to give every in-game puzzle a solid try, but if I find myself getting genuinely frustrated or annoyed with the lack of direction, then I'll consider looking for hints or a guide. But I set a pretty high bar for frustration in that regard, because the more I'm feeling "ugh, I don't know how to do this, I don't get it!" the more rewarding it feels when you have that moment of "OH! OH THIS IS IT!" Fond memories of me and my dad puzzling through Portal 1 and 2 when that game released, we legitimately cheered when we solved a more confusing puzzle lmao

If excellent is extremely satisfactory, and average is the middle, the stat they removed was "extremely unsatisfactory" which is likely where the rest of the 100% is. Falcon probably spared us gamers the indignity of hearing it outloud. lol. But yeah, based on that 38% of people were "good" or better. 46% of people were less than good, aka average or below. And...the rest... well, its unspeakable. Apparently.

yeah i was surprised to see that he portrayed Sky King in such a negative light. He was never planning on crashing the plane into a populated area, it was discovered that he researched isolated places nearby with no people living nearby and thats where he crashed the plane. The guy had problems but never wanted to outwardly take his frustrations on others. Also the plane he did the barrel roll in was never built to do that, so the fact that he was able to was seriously impressive to other pilots.

Fun story. Years ago (probably around 98) I was in Best Buy with my dad and of course being 13years old, I asked him if he would buy me a game. He said yes, but only if it was the game that I hated and took back to the rental store because I said it was too hard. The game? Final Fantasy 7. I literally learnt to drive because of a video game. My dad owned a simulator when I was a kid used by actual race drivers, I was in that car every day (system was built into the car itself with hydrologics to mimic g-force and cornering) My first lesson my instructor accused me of having atleast 300 hours so I agreed with him and passed my license on the second time I saw him 😂

Hard to believe people are on the side of the mom with the no guides thing. I honestly can't play RPGs anymore without a guide, I'm a completionist and want to collect every secret little thing, one time encounter, etc. There's no way to do that without a guide, especially if you have to do a certain thing at a certain time and aren't able to do it afterwards. I learned my lesson playing FFXII, not able to get certain items because I didn't do a certain thing in a one time battle.

Just to clarify, the last story about those 4 kids happened in the south of my country, Colombia. Those kids belong to a indigenous community that has a lot of contact with nature, specially the Amazon forest and they had games within their community and people that taught them about wildlife and nature... They did not learn how to survive from a videogame. I think there is a misinterpretation there, but I am not 100% sure. I doubt that especially since there is still hard access to electricity and technology in certain parts of Colombia. That event was all over the news at that moment (may, 2023), so I was not expecting to see President Gustavo Petro in a gameranx's top 10 lol, but great to see that Colombia was indirectly mentioned.
