I'll throw in the newest Darksiders. I like the original "trilogy" and I was skeptical about the twin-stick shooter looking arcade game, but it actually is kinda fun. Just a different kind of experience, but not necessarily better or worse for it. Which is kind of a good way to go, if you plan on changing the formula. Fromsoft also has some good tales to tell there. Bloodborne/Sekiro/Elden Ring are all distinctly soulsy, but they also all explore new things, from open world, faster pacing and even something that technically amounts to a rhythm game.

The thing about the Tony Hawk game, is that this was around the time Activision started incorporating peripherals to multiple game series or licenses they owned at the time. For instance, a year after Tony Hawk Ride released, the multiple Cabela's games the next several years; Dangerous Hunts 2011, 2013, African Adventures, etc. All included a peripheral, known as the Fearmaster or something to that extent. Basically this thing would monitor your heart rate to determine how clear your aiming is. It's a cool concept & it worked very well compared to the Tony Hawk peripheral! Plus, it worked in other games, although it's a bit clunky to use for say, a platformer. But in the Cabela's games it was largely optional, and I eventually opted to completely use the controller setup after a bit.

The thing with DMC is that, while the gameplay was fun, it was practically the same gameplay as before but with a shittier story. Nah, the gameplay is different too. The style meter isn’t that close to the original in DE’s hardcore mode, Dante and Vergil’s play style differences aren’t balanced, there’s no taunt button, it takes weapon switching to use moves that normally all go to the same weapon

I remember well about how people reacted to The Bureau: XCOM Declassified. After games like Interceptor and Enforcer (and X-COM Alliance being canned), X-COM fans were starving over a game that would return to the turn-based roots. When it was finally announced, people raged hard over 2K's choice. In fact the backlash was so hard that the reason Firaxis made the newer XCOM reboot was because of it and 2K wanting to save face.

It was out after the reboot of xcom which is the genre that a lot of people associated the franchise with when they ignored the older games you mentioned. (That's the originals, not the remakes). The Crash Bandicoot series could make the "changes fans hated" list, too, obviously, later in the series. And then the "changes fans loved" list again with the newest entry. :D

Funny story about the origin of "Donte" as a nickname. As someone who visited threads and forums during the production of DmC, I was among the first few people to push the nickname, which was meant to be pronounced like "Don't-te". I can't quite recall if anyone tried to expand on it, I think it was mainly just meant to be an "offbrand" jab at his name, like those goofy images of Link from Zelda where he's drawn funny and called "Lonk" or "Lunk". That does bring me to little fun fact; In Japan, people referred to reboot Dante as "Dino", which stood for "Dante in name only", and this is actually a somewhat common renaming meme in Japan, as I've heard about other characters in media being given similar names like "x in name only", though I can't remember any off hand since it was so long ago when the names Donte and Dino were being pushed around by the DMC fans. On the case of Silent Hill Homecoming, that was one hell of a wacky trip. Tomm Hulett, the self-proclaimed "biggest Silent Hill fan, no exceptions" and effectively the man in charge of the IP after Konami disbanded the original creators, Team Silent, once shared an interesting story in a podcast. According to Tomm, Homecoming was originally the beginning of a trilogy, hence its subtitle, and to feature many previous protagonists returning to the foggy town, such as Heather, James, and Henry. One of the characters, Elle, was originally a grown up Laura from Silent Hill 2, and the story would apparently involve the return of Alessa. That alone was pretty weird, especially for any fans of the series who know about Heather's connection to Alessa (and by extension, Cheryl), but that's not even the weirdest thing. Tomm mentions that the premise was to feature a "Dragon Ball Z style battle" between Alessa, who would wield fire powers, and Joshua, the younger brother of Homecoming's Alex, who would wield water powers. The entire story is so utterly ridiculous that it sounds like it was made up by a troll, but that's really what was originally planned. It's so insane sounding that it actually makes you wonder how that would have turned out had Hulett not intervened when he did. As crazy and stupid as it sounded, it sounds like something that might have turned out amusing if only for utterly ludicrous it was going to be.

From what I remember from old interviews, the guys behind Silent Hill Homecoming were forced to use elements from the Silent Hill film. The dmc controversy was the biggest joke to me. I played that game before I (attempted) the original trilogy and enjoyed half of 4. But everything people complained about in dmc, I expected to NOT be in the older games and it just wasn't the case. The old story is just as fucking wacky and over-the-top stupid. Which is completely fine, just don't act like DMC is weird for the same reasons that you relish in the old games. The only thing I can see from super sweaty hardcore nerds is that the combat is a bit easier to execute. Personally I enjoy the "switching system" in DMC a LOT more than the stupid style swapping to cram more button inputs into Dante or the "perfect" execution required to make Nero gameplay more fun. You get Nero's pull, but also get to grapple yourself, weapons are just as fun and creative, have some good impact and individuality and the gameplay flows super nicely, even with the gimmick colored enemies. Which is an insane feat, because something like that can literally break a game.

I actually really liked The Bureau. Yeah is just a cover shooter, but it has a pause mode to give skill and positioning orders to your squad. And your personal skill tree is very support oriented. So it ends up still feeling like a strategy game. And there is a decent variety of aliens too, a lot from the better known xcom games, but some originals like the goo things are there too. The base building was gutted, but you still recruited and leveled guys and had to research new tech. The story even took an interesting turn for the end. Overall I had a great time. You didn't even know that DmC is a different universe from the original games so im not buying you being a fan. DmC deserved the backlash people didnt like the changes within the game and how devs were just being assholes to the fanbase and because of that it failed and fans didnt buy DmC. You just come off as a made edgy teen that can't except that fans didn't like the reboot nor wanted a reboot and didn't support it. For that its dead in the water as it should be.

Dmc: Devil May Cry is such an incredible game (better than 2 and 4 for me) but it faced so much backlash just because of the new Dante. He was cheesy and a bit annoying but the game in general was great. Btw, has anyone noticed that Nero at DMC 5 was looking and acting suspiciously a lot like "reboot" Dante but with white hair and people thought that he was great?

There's this lesser known franchise of the South Korean developers Phantagram (and published by Blueside) called *"Kingdom Under Fire"*... Amazing RPG-strategy games but pretty much everything they have done to those games since the third entry has been an even worse change than the one prior. The only actually good thing they've done for the granchise since 2005 was when they ported the 2 Xbox exclusive games to PC on 2020 (and they are not even that good of ports but still way better than everything else)

I never really thought of it as 'not' a spinoff, even in lieu of a new platformer entry. I often find it baffling that for some franchises, creating a spinoff game gets treated as an 'unwarranted change in direction for the entire series', even when there's nothing stopping them from just picking up where they left off later (Look at Devil May Cry). Mario constantly takes vacations from the normal course of main Mario games to drive and play sports and even engage in tactical shooter combat and nobody really bats an eye, yet somehow the concept of a similar character doing the same thing doesn't occur to people.

@immortalfrieza

#8 The worst thing about Declassified is that a squad based third person shooter is a logical deviation from the original XCOM games... except that it has basically nothing in common with the rest of the series in gameplay or story. It has a set protagonist with a predefined backstory and personality, you just pick up equipment during missions instead of having to research them, there isn't a notable difference between the stuff you start with and the stuff you pick up to use later on, there isn't downing UFOs with your own fighter craft and everything that goes with that, or any fighter craft at all... One of the things that made XCOM appealing was that you were the underdog. You are fighting against a vastly technologically superior foe, so you have to take what you can get from them and use that to improve your own equipment and vehicles so that you can beat them more easily. By the end of the game you're not only on their level, but you're superior to them. You don't get that impression with Declassified. It's a real shame too, they could've made things pretty interesting had they put in real effort into Declassified and games like it, but we'll probably never see any games like it in the series again due to how half assed this game was.

One thing that really ruins games is when developers make changes that no one asked for or when they refuse to revert bad changes. This applies to a lot of sequels, but it's really prevalent in F2P and continuously updated games. Like the game Dirty Bomb on PC. It died for multiple reasons, but mainly removing things or making changes that no one asked for and then refusing to revert any changes. It's so sad some of my favorite games were killed this way.

Thanks for aiming criticism at the companies rather than the fans. There's a certain other gaming channel that will say it's all the fans fault. The fans are the ones buying the content so if you want them to continue buying then their opinions should matter. Some of these could have been original IPs and done well, but piggybacking off a series just to get their fans does the exact opposite of what these companies think it does.
