I will always be greatful for my 3DS. My childhood dog was terrified of cameras, and would literally flee if you tried to take his picture. I have no idea why, he was already a few years old when we got him. I ended up getting a 3DS a few months before he passed, and he was very used to seeing me playing my original DS, so I was able to actually take pictures of him. It's basically the only pictures I have of him. He was such a good boy.

I loved my 3DS for Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance (I see you, Square Enix...Kingdom Hearts 3D, lol). I have no idea why, but seeing the opening and hearing the orchestral version of Simple and Clean just always made me cry 😂. I found it very beautiful and I'm a sap for Simple and Clean as it usially means the end of an adventure (yes, I used to be *deep* into KH. Not so much anymore, growing up and all that). I didn't use the 3D function all the time (I wear glasses so it could sometimes add just one more glare-like thing I have to contend with...though I do like 3D movies), but I didn't mind the feature.

For #5, there was also "Defiance", a TV series on SyFy featuring humans and aliens coexisting on a postapocalyptic Earth ravaged by alien terraforming technology and an MMORPG set in the same world, with events in one being reflected in the other. I liked the show but I never played the game.

The zapper gun was awesome. It's only real problem was that it wasn't designed for television sets built years after the zapper was discontinued. New TVs refresh way too fast. The way the thing worked was that after the trigger was pulled, the screen would go black for one screen to make sure the player wasn't cheating. Then a white square was placed where the target is. If the gun detects the white square, it registers a hit. If not, it registers a miss. Unfortunately, this requires precise timing and was calibrated for 1980s television sets which refreshed at a slower rate than later sets.

The Biofeedback gimmick could’ve been great in jump-scare games. The player is getting too chill? Dim the lights and spawn some zombie where there usually wouldn’t be any. The player’s in danger of a cardiac event? The lights get brighter and zombies either get scarcer and/or slower/weaker for a few minutes. Could’ve made things more dynamic.

I don't understand the logic of increasing the difficulty when your heart rate increases. If your heart is racing, you're more likely to be struggling with a game (likely meaning that you're getting frustrated/angry), so making the difficulty go UP is a bit daft in my mind.

The NES actually had a few terrible peripherals besides the power glove. There was the NES R.O.B. which never functioned the way you'd want it to. There was the Power Pad for Track and Field which worked kind of like a DDR pad. The NES Laser Scope which looked like a helicopter fighter pilot headset but didn't really work. That trend continued into SNES peripherals as well with things like the Super Scope.

I love that the Kinnect raised privacy concerns back then and now people buy all sorts of units that are knowingly recording every single thing you say or do. That's not a defense of the Kinnect or Alexa, just funny how people are now BUYING privacy invasion and weren't cool with it when it came with the device. Also, how did the power glove reach number 1 when it sold well? It was bad, yes. But you featured a product that failed so hard it destroyed a company that was making quality games for ages, or the kinnect that failed hard, twice and nearly sunk the console along with the DRM

9. actually 3d gaming is great if done right, just that some company when adding their own "stereoscopic 3d" into their games - they just half a**ed by using one camera in the game duplicate a 2nd one and moved to make a 2nd image for the other eye which still 2d and adds a miniscule depth (2.5d). company that did this that i know was crytek - using 2.5d on crysis 2 and 3. the 3ds did okay but newer 3ds like the xl should done it better. 8. optional. 7. kind of stupid to make it a permanent thing on xbox one for a time.

I think if Kinect 2.0 was an optional add-on it would still be around and we would have probably got a Kinect 3.0 with the Series consoles. As is people saw it as additional evidence Xbox was ignoring their core audience to market to the causal's when the Xbox One launched that it ended up garnering so much hate they killed it off to try and save face. In the Xbox 360 days when the original Kinect came out I remember people being upset it didn't match the hype from marketing but for the most part people thought it was interesting and bought one or though it was stupid and didn't it didn't have the hate then that the Kinect 2.0 got from being forced on people.

The Kinect had an additional complicating factor, in that it was the first time a console was actively pushing always-online requirements. Not only did the console require you to accept a camera in your living room, it was going to be connected to the internet at all times. Making matters even worse (at least for US audiences), the announcement came the same freaking week as a series of leaks regarding government surveillance within the US. All of a sudden, privacy was THE topic on everyone's minds, and Microsoft dropped their announcement of this mandatory always-online camera right into the middle of that climate. If I had to point to a single factor that contributed to the Xbox One losing so much market share to the PS4 (beyond the PS4 being much easier to develop for than the PS3 was and getting a larger library than the PS3 as a result), that would be it, and Microsoft's console division still hasn't really made up that loss.

If I could add, blue ray winning the small format war as well didn't help
@LC-uh8if
@LC-uh8if Жыл бұрын
@@SudrianTales Blu-Ray only won the format war because Sony put one in every PS3. HD-DVD was the superior format and sold better in standalone players, but Microsoft chose to stay with DVDs, making the HD-DVD drive an optional accessory on the XBox 360. Video game systems far outsold standalone video players, allowing Sony's Blu-Ray to achieve far greater market penetration than HD-DVD. The XBox One had a Blu-Ray drive built in if I remember correctly, so Blu-Ray wasn't the reason the PS4 did better, though it certainly may have helped PS3 sales as it would give you a Video Game system and Video Player in one.

@@Redhotsmasher HD-DVD had a number of features (interactivity and online connectivity) from the beginning that were added in later revisions of Blu-Ray. Blu-Ray had more capacity (and therefore could support a higher bitrate though I couldn't really tell the difference on TVs back then) but both formats had plans to even larger capacities to one up each other which seem to have been abandoned when Blu-Ray won the war. HD-DVD had weaker DRM and no region locking, but personally I would consider that a win. The studios I'm sure would disagree.

i dont agree with quantum break here ... i actually wanted more of the 'tv' bits ... as i found that to be the thing that most interested me ... the gameplay was your rather standard action adventure/sci-fi tosh and kinda meh ... but the 'tv' bits were actually infinitely more interesting

Yes! Sci-fi is my favorite genre, especially space/time travel. I love how that game handled time travel. It lines up with one of the more popular principles/theories of time travel. I really want Xbox to give the rights to Remedy.

If I had to pick a company that I think could pull it off, it would be Remedy. But that’s still just going real big before establishing the story anyway. Control’s story was getting exhausting for me even though it as really cool. I would not have had the energy to watch hour long videos about it

I loved the 3D games I played on PlayStation. Apparently I was one of the few that thoroughly enjoyed it & was sad to see more titles didn’t implement it. 😅

My favorite memory of the Kinect yelling the dragon shout for whirlwind sprint while my buddy was playing Skyrim, resulting in his character blasting off the side of a cliff and dying. Good times.

The Wii U didn’t sell well, but the Switch’s successor does kinda beg for it. The dock is right there, and I imagine it has to be discussed. The possibilities are WORTH it. It’s the same with motion controls. PC gamers love motion controls in FPS games, b/c, whether you realize it or not, modern FPS games have to bend over backwards with aim-assist so you’re not IMMEDIATELY killed. There’s actually A LOT of trickery involved in making FPS games play well with dual analogue, b/c it’s just THAT BAD of an input method for these games, specifically.

I’m surprised #5 didn’t bring up the 5000 peripheral media FFXV has. Like, yeah that’s probably hypocritical coming from my ass with a FFVII Compilation avatar, but like. XV’s was intentional out the gate, VII’s at least took its time over decades lol. I love XV so far (working through story atm instead of XVI haha), but I still need to tackle Kingsglaive and the anime prequel too. OTL;;

I honestly hope Microsoft brings back the Skylanders IP with or without the toys ( though, if there's a way to make a new game that doesn't require the toys but allows those of us who still have them & the portals to scan our stuff for faster unlocks that would be great )...and the biggest problems with amiibo are supply issues ( ffs WHY all the obnoxious retailer exclusives? why so many issues getting them stocked? can scalpers just drop dead please? ) and lack of compelling usage. I keep hoping Nintendo announces a Skylanders style adventure game where you can scan amiibo to unlock characters to play as....think Smash Bros but a true crossover with a story

I normally don’t comment on here but in regards to Skylanders…you can’t say the peripherals bombed when it sold 3 billion in 4 years…

#6 Leisure Suit Larry 7 - Love for Sail was even further ahead, I think in 1996. It included a scratch and sniff paper that emulated 9 of the game's environments, called CyberSniff2000. The game would announce whenever you entered such an area in game.

Leather goddesses of Phobos had scratch and sniff even earlier, back in 1986. Interestingly in a similarly tacky genre.

Kinect 1.0 never bombed. It sold 35 millions and is the second best selling add-on ever after Balanceboard for Wii which didn't sell much more than Kinect. I know the video mention only Kinect 2.0 and not 1.0.

If you do a part two, you should include the game “lifeline” for ps2. You would use a microphone and command characters in game with your voice. Pretty cool concept that never really came up again.
