The issue with heavy rain's blackouts is it's a scrapped supernatural side plot. Ethan was supposed to have a psychic connection to the oragami killer. But they decided that was too fanciful and killed the plot, but didn't remove the earlier scenes building to it.

The main criticism is that there are some diehard fans that say that FF16 is not an RPG anymore. It has some RPG elements sure, but apparently the RPG mechanics need to be deep for a game to be considered as such, which is kinda ridiculous IMO. Other criticisms I found were that the game was action focused but not to the point of being as solid as DMC or Bayonetta.

"Hammered" being the best word for it too. It's got all the subtlety and nuance of a 4yo child giggling waiting for someone to sit on a whoopie cushion. I think the real message of the game was that “violence perpetuates violence” or something like that. But that message gets heavily diluted when you’re forced to play through two perspectives of the same story where the objective is to advance the plot *through violence*

The massive issue with Destiny 2 was that it suffered the exact issue as D1. Vanilla, lackluster launch, paid expansions to flesh out and fix the game, rinse and repeat. A lot of people were accepting of this for D1 because it was the first time someone tried this particular format on consoles. But doing the same thing for the sequel burnt a lot of that good will. Destiny 2 still does things that people regularly crucify later titles for (Anthem, Avengers, Gotham Knights, etc).

I'm one of the people who absolutely agreed with the critics when it came to Deathloop. It was hands down my favorite game that year. I still maintain that up until redfall arcane did not make a single bad game and I share the conspiracy theory that they made red fall bad on purpose so they're never asked to do a live service ever again. Going through and finding different ways to play through the story of death loop was absolutely my favorite part about it. Honestly my problem with The Last of Us Part 2 is that it exists. Plot grievances aside, I thought that the first game’s story was so airtight that a sequel wasn’t necessary. I can understand people loving Skyward Sword. It's certain unique among the Zelda catalog and we haven't seen anything quite like it either before or since. What other game is like it? The original game had Link to the Past that felt similar (along with Link's Awakening and Link Between World). Ocarina had Majora's Mask and Twilight Princess. The GameBoy Color games have each other. WindWaker had the DS followup. But Zelda 2 and Skyward Sword stand unique. Even Breath of the Wild, which could have gone in a similar direction for Skyward since the WiiU could use the wiimote (and Switch had joycons) but it didn't. So, yes, Skyward Sword gives you a one-of-a-kind experience that I just don't care for it.

Last of Us II and Naughty Dog fucked up on several occasions, but even if you take these things out of the equation there are still things that were annoying to many players, likee still things that were annoying to many players, two of the more obvious ones are that it jumps back and forth and breaks the flow several times and that you play with someone who kills the beloved main character of the first game within an hour of playtime without having any real attachment to her. It's like they so desperately wanted to paint her in a bad light and then make her redemption arc work, but half the playerbase didn't care anymore at this point. I've made my peace that the game isn't what I wanted nor what I expected, but it's a decent game if you take the franchise out of it. As a sequel however it failed for me.

From what I've gathered from people who've actually played the game and still hated it, the sequence of events should have been played out in chronological order if the developers wanted that emotional gut punch they were going for. That, or have Abby conflicted with her emotions about going ahead and killing Joel. Like, here's the boogyman before her that's she made him out to, and he's nothing like she imagined. Have him take her in as another daughter like figure, and a sister to Ellie, and *THEN* have her go through with killing him. Abby is now guilt ridden with what she had done, having lost another father but this time by her own hand, and Ellie feeling of betrayal fueling her desire for revenge.

Movies and video games suffer from the same thing when it comes to critics vs fans, and its been explained in much better videos that I can explain here, but the gest is that critics are working and they want something they can write about. They dont care about the game itself, the fanbase, easter eggs, fanservice, nods and references, how well it slots into the mythos of the world itself. What critics want is something new, original, innovative. Something that pushes the narrative forward and has an agenda. Fans just want to be able to enjoy themselves and know that the IP stayed true to itsellf. If a Batman movie came out and it was just a movie about him in a psych ward surrounded by other patients who he portrays as his comic book villains in his pysche as he struggles to come to grips whether he is truly Bruce Wayne or Batman, and you never actually see him in the movie dressed as Batman or as a billionaire Bruce Wayne. The critics would lap it up and herald it as a 10/10 movie. Meanwhile fans would be pissed that Batman isnt Batmaning in the movie. Bottom line. Critics are just working and want some narrative that can be pushed no matter how shallow. The audience are the fans that want to enjoy themselves.

There is no other #1, and that's all I'll say about that haha. I think one of the bigger complaints about Destiny 2 wasn't that it was *like* Destiny 1.5, but that it should've *been* Destiny 1.5. I dropped out during Destiny 1 but my housemate was very much still addicted and was deep in the community, and lot of the gripes a saw come out of it were mostly about how they would've rather they just dropped another major expansion because while they didn't totally mind the similarities between the two games, they did mind having to start all over again and none of their weapons, armor, etc. carrying over. It felt less like a true continuation mechanically and more like a reboot. In regards to Street Fighter 6, I'm on board with griping about the World Tour grindiness and some of the weird texture popping, but gamers should learn by now how premature and even silly it is to complain about beloved major characters not being available at launch. Every game is missing at least one at launch, and most of them eventually end up in the game by the end when the roster more than doubles. The only characters people shouldn't hold their breaths for are dead ones (like Bison allegedly), but even then Capcom is no stranger to walking that back and retconning it either.

The last time Final Fantasy fans weren't divided was Final Fantasy VI in 1994. The most rabidly vocal people complaining about the changes are really only fans of VI-X and even amongst that crowd VIII and X isn't a safe bet. Besides the JRPG community is filled with negative people who hate everything as a badge of honor in an attempt that they have better taste than you and the newest game they enjoyed was Shadow Hearts Covenant. Also nearly every fighting game sequel is divisive at launch...until that game gets a sequel.

I always felt that the changes in each Final Fantasy game gave it their own identity. Not every Final Fantasy is the same and I thought each one brought something to the table. I felt 7 was generally loved when it came out as everyone was blown away seeing FF in 3d. There was always an excited expectation of what comes next and what new things would be included but also no one thought it wouldn’t be an RPG. You could always rely on that and it was a genre loved by all fans. I think fans have a right to express themselves without being demonised. Henry Cavil famously stuck up for fans when the interviewer tried to call them toxic for the Witcher. I think that applies here, too. It was always cool to see what unique changes each FF would bring and the FF VI director said that was always the intention that each one game would be its own thing but of course, an RPG (moving away from the job combat in V and making each character have unique abilities) The criticisms about 16 are valid though. It’s a good action game but an incredibly poor FF. it took out a lot of popular RPG elements that have been in most FFs. No Party based combat, no Gil you can actually spend on useful things, no element based effects, receiving items that are not valuable when exploring, no hidden bosses, brain dead side quests with no useful reward etc. Yoshida’s comment about Western gamers having short attention spans looks laughable now that Baldur’s Gate 3 is out, being so popular with all those slow traditional RPG elements FF16 gutted. It’s also a turn based CRPG. I hope Square take notice of these criticisms from a lot of the fans and people stop insulting those fans as “purists” or other nonsense terms. I hope Square notices why BG3 is doing so well. It’s clear FF16 is not a masterpiece and the result is it has no chance of winning GOTY unfortunately.

It is not. A masterpiece is "the best a game can be in and off itself". Like how a 10/10 shouldn't just be given to a game that is perfect, because no game is, perfection doesn't exist, but should be given to a game that is as close to the best version of itself that it can be. And on that account, even if you don't hold XVI up to its peers and cry fowl at the lack of turn-based combat, it still has a lot of missed opportunities. It's a GREAT game, yes. A masterpiece? Hardly.

I have the Switch version and I will say for a fact that What Culture Gaming are being idiots as per usual. I don’t hate Skyward Sword. Fi isn’t an annoying partner like Navi levels of annoyance. Fi is important to the whole Zelda franchise as she IS the Master Sword and she was designed to be robotic like. Players start to grow attached to Fi over the course of their adventure in Skyward Sword and are really sad to see her leave. And putting Super Mario Sunshine on the list when I grew up playing Super Mario Sunshine and when it was very close to my heart is something that I take as an insult because I have never heard anybody say anything bad about Super Mario Sunshine. Like it introduced fan favorite character Bowser Jr.

@11:02 The difference between TLOU2 and most others on this list is that the so-called "Critics" were just the usual self-fellating corporate types patting themselves on the back for the typical hollow soulless corporate diversity checklisting. It's a sequel that was never needed, that told a story no one wanted, that undermined and ruined characters people loved... so it could be a pretentious snob with the zero-subtlety "reveal" that everyone saw coming of the shock antagonist actually being elevated to sainthood levels of goodness. The thing that irks me about it is that it could've been salvaged just by being edited into a different order, it would still be rightly loathed for character assassinating Ellie and Tommy... but the devs were so far up their own butts with their "wow le epic surprise twist that Abby is the goodest good girl" that they never even considered largely making the game go in simple chronological order with frequently alternating perspectives. Instead they had to go for cheap Horror B Movie gore shock with Joel In One, when the narrative would've been better served by players spending time with Abby first and approaching the scene from a "Will she or won't she" knowing who she is. Just because it's a bad idea for something that shouldn't have been made at all, it doesn't mean you need to also suck at the execution and presentation. If a better experience was delivered, it would still be disliked but maybe not so rightly reviled.

I wanted to track down Abby and her crew and get them all. Perfect motivation indeed. I will always respect any franchise that is willing to take chances, try new things and not just repeat what worked. don’t get wrong it’s not a perfect game but few are. The pacing when they do the big switch is terrible and some of Abby’s play through could’ve been cut. And it went a little too long at the end. But man…..what a game. What a story.
