Ladies, wear modest clothes and do not be afraid of the heat. The more you cover the body, the more it will be protected from the direct heat of the sun. And she's right, the choice of material is the most important. This is a sincere advice of a veiled girl from a country where the temperature in the summer rises to 45 degrees. Your speech is very wonderful and sane Anna.

This is what people fail to understand! They think exposing more will keep them cool but in reality it is actually the exact opposite. The reason why the locals of dessert always cover up from head to toe.

So true. As a pale redhead, I can't expose much skin without getting sun poisoning anyway. The few times I tried to "get a tan" -- can we say "lobster girl?!" -- I was so much hotter than when I cover up.

It’s such a myth that wearing less clothing in the heat makes you cooler! Recently amidst the NYC heat wave I began to wear longer sleeves, pants, and maxi skirts in breathable fabrics (for modesty & sun/ pollution protection)- I’ve actually been more comfortable and cooler than I ever was wearing shorts and tanks.

Anna, thank you for educating me on linen years ago. The majority of my summer wardrobe is linen and it is fantastic for keeping me cool and looking a bit elevated (much classier than a cotton t-shirt). I also find it very disrespectful when tourists wear inappropriate attire in places of worship. We should think of ourselves as representatives of the country, city or town we are from when traveling, so dress well.

Love the point about churches, unfortunately this common sense and courtesy is not so common! It's also important to note that in many of the bigger cathedrals in Europe, the staff will not let you enter if you are wearing inappropriate clothing and they may ask you to buy a covering for the duration of your visit - i've seen this many times. So it's better to be respectful and prepared rather than be embarrassed at the entrance!

I think linen is seen differently in different cultures, because I was raving about how posh linen looks to my friend from Indonesia and she said in her culture linen is mostly worn by the servants and help staff of rich families. I was a little bit surprised, but it makes sense as it's a hardy, rough and cooling material that's perfect for work attires in the tropics.

Your advice is always so refreshing! Do you have any advice for younger ladies? Say between the ages of 14-18? It’s so hard to be classy as a teenager while retaining that youthful teenage look. How do I find that balance? As an 18 year old I do find myself dressing in a manner that ages me which is a shame because I would like to look young while I am young if that makes sense

@@a.b.2405 I did try that for a while! It was cute but not really my style, at the end of the day I do tend towards a more classic, timeless look but it can be hard to dress in such a way with some of the things I do with friends and whatnot. For example today I am going bowling and will probably end up wearing a pair of paper bag denim shorts and and a cropped linen top. Would I like to wear something a little different? Absolutely but I have no clue how to balance it out like that in these kinds of situations

I try not to dress up or look “expensive” as a tourist. I try to blend in with the locals as much as possible. Many places I visit are impoverished (but very beautiful) countries. As such, the people are poor and need only an excuse to mug you or worse. Leave jewellery at home and don’t look “expensive” unless you want to be a target. PS pants and leggings are harder to remove if someone attacks or attempts to r*pe you. Function over fashion unless you’re vacationing on a private yacht! Please

@@fluffytail6355 Nobody said that, but you don’t have to be underdressed just because a crime may occur. Crimes occur anytime, anywhere. Better stay home according to that logic. And I’m from Rio, Brazil, so I know what I’m talking about. I was never mugged in Rio de Janeiro in my life and I dress like “an European tourist” daily. Btw, we wear bikinis in shopping malls. Of course you can’t do that in India, for example, but Europe? Common sense, please. Anna isn’t saying “wear all your expensive jewellery”; she’s saying “wear this hat, wear that midi dress”… in Europe! I did a road trip in Italy for a whole month and, honestly, pretty much every Italian woman would wear the most expensive items walking the streets. Fancier stuff than what Anna suggests.

These are all great tips, Anna. I have "touristed" a lot in Europe in summer and usually manage to look so much like a local that tourists ask me for directions and locals speak in their own language to me. Your advice about elevated warm weather looks was spot on. To a summer festival I recently attended, I wore a sleeveless white blouse (tip: wear it buttoned lower than the right button, use a small 🧷 safety pin to secure the low cut look) and high wasted skirt in a beautiful red and gold print fabric…giving leg, carrying a fabulous bag and well chosen jewelry, and my big shades. I stood out from the booty shorts, tank top wearing women. My upscale look pulled a fine looking well-heeled Man. We had a great afternoon listening to the live performances and talking. We have been spending time ever since. First impressions! 😉

I agree with your tips. I think it’s about time travelers start dressing like adults and not overgrown children. People need to stop saying they will be hot and uncomfortable if one dresses with dignity. Thank you for the plug about the shorts and tanks in places of worship. It’s totally inappropriate. 💕💕

Thank you for yet more wonderful advice, Anna! I especially loved how your emphasize wearing appropriate clothes for places of worship. I agree that linen and A-line dresses are a fabulous summer choice. I'm not so keen on sneakers with dresses--flats or canvas shoes with foot support tend to be a more flattering and upscale combination, especially for those of us who are not long-legged. Thank you again for helping to make the world a more graceful place!

What a refreshing outlook! Feminine , classy appropriate for occasions, quality fabrics, respectful of other cultures and the way they live, worship, etc...AND you always look beautiful! It's funny, but today I was looking at backpacks and fanny packs for future travel, and I immediately thought "Would Anna term these as classy?" the answer was NO, and I kept on walking ,LOL. Besides they were far from being attractive. Although young moms do carry them when they have little ones because it leaves both their arms free, understandable. I am always thinking, wallet, phone, comb, lipstick, compact, and wonder if it all fits in the small bags? I love the look of linen. The blue linen dress looked stunning on you. Thank You Anna. And please keep expounding on NO leggings and athletic and athleisure wear, and running, shoes, It looks boring, everyone and their aunt is wearing them, looks unoriginal, all look the same, and plain, NO one, dressed like that stands out for looking beautiful and classy in a sea of leggings. I am thankful for young women like yourself who care about themselves!

i agree with everything except choice of bag=s.. It will look good in pics. But when travelling its necessary to have a spacious bag. The bags that mention here cannot even hold a water bottle.. There are super cute medium size bag packs out there which hold travel essential. Chanel ,Fendi , prada backpacks are my favorite out of them all.. These bags are not so bulky as a school bags. perfect size

Thank you. This video is exactly what I've been waiting for years from you Anna. Living in Bali where it's "summer" everyday and moving around on two wheels everywhere.. I don't have any problem with dresses to wear to stay neat & classy around Bali. Besides the culture prefers anyone to dress modestly anyway, so I'm comfortable with that. Footwear; now that's tricky for me. Riding scooter, walking on uneven pavement, going to somebody's house which only access is the dirt road, buying groceries in pasar (local market).. Heels sometimes won't do

My thoughts exactly. My grandmother was the most stylish lady I've ever known, and her advice was, "Some pick-pockets are truly desperate. Never travel with anything you aren't willing to lose." She would always leave her better jewelry, bags, and shoes at home during travel for safety reasons.

I will wear backpack when I take on Everest Base Camp Trek. I love your suggestions: bright colored small bags. Shorts are good for beach strolls. I think denim shorts are okay when you hike up Santorini or cruise on catamaran on Santorini caldera. When you take off your denim shorts, you still have your bikini swimsuit. So jump right off into the caldera.
