Totally agree about the wind being important. I learned that from a KZbin video years ago when I was researching how to grow tomatoes. Putting some wind on the seedlings helped them grow thicker, sturdier stems.

Hello there, Mr. Sheffield. You mentioned soil compaction. In your soil mixtures, you usually add perlite. As we know, perlite rises to the top of the soil over time. I've decided to use pumice instead because it's not going to travel upwards over time, and since it's staying where I've put it (like a good dog 😊), the soil remains well aerated. I understand that pumice is a bit more expensive than perlite but I believe that it's well worth it. Soil aeration becomes one less worry for me if I have a plant that's not behaving properly. The fewer variables, the better, right? I 💗, ❤, 💖 your channel. I watch many others, but when I have to figure out the nuts and bolts of a problem, I inevitably come right here for your take on the issue. Vicky, North Carolina, USA

I am glad I found your channel! I started with a Xanadu that was gifted to me almost 5 years ago. And over the last few years expanded the collection. I have a peperomia ruby glow, that when i bought it, it was in the tiniest little desktop pot. I was not very confident at the time about pruning, so after repotting it I just let it do its thing. And after a while it was starting to look like an octopus. But after watching some (okay, most) of your videos on propagating, I now have 3! So a very sincere thank you!

Wind is an essential part of a plants growth, can also help with the anchoring of the root system. It is why I don't stake trees anymore as when these are removed they become more susceptible to being blown over, due to the lack of lateral surface roots

Best think I've invested in for plants was two sansi bulbs, moisture meter and smart outlets to plug everything in. I can set the timer for longer or shorter etc on them and not only do I get more light in my space on gray days but my plants all get consistent light. The best part about smart outlets is I can see on my phone from anywhere in the house if my lights have come on etc so if I'm unwell or busy I'm not making the plants wait and I'm not having to schedule myself around the plants. I know if you work the same shift daily or have a baby etc you may have a very set schedule so it's not hard to remember to turn on lights, but I struggle with pain and PTSD and meds for both, the lights coming on automatically really helps both my mental health and my plants!

@@JH-lz4dh I am in Canada and right now it is bright from about 4am (not sunrise but before it) until about 1020pm (after sunset but still bright enough to see outside), so it can be very easy to forget to turn plant lights on in the summer! In the winter it is bright from about 730am until 4pm and if I don't have the lights coming on and off automatically it is very easy to just stay in the dark, go to bed early and be very lazy, which isn't good for mental or physical health, OR my plants! Even if you're someone who doesn't have plants, if you have big swings in the day light hours like we do I totally recommend the timers for as many lights as possible, it really REALLY helps with your circadium rhythm!!!

I always like to use a low dose of my favorite plant fertilizer for my outdoor and indoor. Tiger bloom is amazing. Mixed with aquarium water even when I'm being neglected on care. My plants seem to be happy.

All great advice. Spot on. For example, both my ZZ's (reg & raven) have been putting out new growth one after the other since the end of January, so 4 months, as it's now towards the end of May. Now, not as prolific as a pothos, but probably atleast 1 new one every couple weeks. They are in 4.5" reused plastic pots in a cache pot in a tropical plant mix, a bit of added bark & perlite, in good light (2 ft or 61 cm from a 10W Sansi). All my plants get harvested rainwater, and the ZZs are watered every 2 weeks or so + fish emulsion feed 1/month. While I gravitate to more low light tolerant plants due to my low-moderate light conditions, I do supplement with different grow lights, so all my plants get the best I can give them. I also do research on each plant, usually before I even decide to buy it, figure out where they grew naturally, which gives me a good benchmark to work with. What I like about the low light tolerant is their versatility, unlike others in my collection which require prime lighting real estate.

I drink lots of sparkling spring water and if there is any left in the glass in the morning, Itip this little amount intomy palm plant. It loves it! It is big and healthy with no brown tipped leaves. They all seem to like room temperature sparkling water. It must give them oxygen to their roots. I am a real softy when it comes to buying house plants. Lidl always have good examples at reasonable prices.

I always have a ceiling fan on for that much needed air circulation. I found that air circulation is key to helping my plants dry out! If you are struggling with over watering plants like orchids and air plants to try moving them to a full bathroom. They have moisture from the bath/shower to prevent them from drying out while trying to space out watering. Some plants are a little harder to find that Goldilocks water zone. Just moving the orchids I was struggling with to the bathroom while I figured out their watering needs as the game changer that saved those orchids. Once I figured out that Goldilocks watering zone, I was able to move them to a more preferred location 🙂. Having too much mulch and / or a tree planted too far down will also cause roots to strangle a tree. I agree that is less of an issue for indoor plants.

I so appreciate your videos! You answered so many questions I had about taking care of my plants! I just purchased a plant light and have had it on constantly! Now, I am so happy to know the correct way to use it. Also, the air to your plants I had heard about but wasn't for sure about it, but now I will be doing this! Also watering i have found to be very stressful because I don't want to overwater and lose any plants, and succulents are very tricky I've learned, so i want to purchase a watering meter, that is such a great tool! I have a Jade, and i can not get it to grow properly, and they are supposed to be easy to care for. It's just frustrating because I adore Jade plants! I also wanted some advice on what a good mixture of soil would be for my plants plus food! So you have really helped answer a lot of very important questions for me! My aloe doesn’t like light that much. She has found her favourite spot almost 4 meters away from the window in a semi-shady room. If I put her onto the windowsill (even now in November!) she loses colour and stops growing. I thought I had lost her when I just got her from a friend and it was the time of year with 30 degrees celsius and I thought “Hey! That’s a desert plant! The soil she is standing in is too wet for her so let’s change it and give her some light!”. She just turned brown. And when I left for two days and put her back on the table feeling kind of defeated I was baffled when I came home to a green plant. Two days. Crazy!

Great tips :-) Our relative was complaining that her ficus is not growing for years - she hasn´t repotted in about 10 years and never fertilised it, and still was suprised it isn´t growing anymore. Moisture meter: such a genious device. I only wish it was being widely sold in plant shops, and more people knew that it exists and what a difference it can make - so many plant lives could be saved 😀

I had a curious thing happen this week. I took my alocasia on the balcony for the daytime (balcony gets 0 direct sunlight and it's to the east so most of the daylight is also from behind the building). The temperatures were roughly 17...21 °C. When I took the alocasia back inside, all the leaves had light colored ovals in the middle of the "bump ripple" texture on the leaf. It doesn't look like infection, it looks more like "sunburn", but given the conditions it's hard to consider seriously. But maybe it's a "cold sore" from the sun going down in the evening and there being perhaps some wind before taking it inside? I'm sure the plant hasn't gotten too used to temperature variance inside (probably 22...24 °C without draft is the environment) but it's been out there occasionally on days that stay at least 20 °C. What could be the reasons alocasia gets light colored areas on those most protruding parts of the leaf?

@@SheffieldMadePlants hmm soil is what it came in, like all my other calatheas that seem to be doing well. It seems pretty well draining yet keeps moisture in. Moisture metre is on 5 reading, and humidity in room is 80%. It's 2 meters away north west facing window, with a weak grow light on it about a foot away, for 6 hours daily. Sometimes I bring it closer to the window and the leaf reacts by folding down, or if I put foil under it it does the same. What do you think? Siderant. Considering it hasn't got that dark red underside I thought it would require more light than my average calathea.

Oh my God! I saw a chlorophytum amaniense ( orange stem plant) I think thats the name. Help!!! Please help me!!!Mine was bushy beautiful and made two side plants that I dug out and potted up and gave away. Then it got brown leaves so I repotted deeper and bigger pot because the stem was getting bare. It got worse ..... I repotted again only one stem left, in a much smaller pot, now I have like 3 leaves that are ok and the rest have brown. It went from two feet across to a twig . As much as I enjoy the videos from the "experts", I don't have a $200 grow light, nor can I buy a different specified fertilizer for every plant I own. Lol. I appreciate knowing the ideal but providing that just isn't feasible. Also, I'm LOVING my water meter. I suggest anyone who doesn't have one to splurge the $5 because it's worth it.

I have seen recently a surge in just using regular LED lightbulbs. If you have a standing lamp or regular just replace the bulbs and you have a much cheaper 'growlight' alternative. When I turn on my bedroom lights the plants under them seem to thrive. I have been using slow release fertiliser pellets and I just add them to the soil and forget they are there.
