Idk, I usually buy unriped, and just wait a couple days and use them as they get riped through out the week. I'm Mexican and I love avocados on everything, I thinking being patient is the best way. Also I tend to buy them in Walmart which you have two choices either super ripe or green lol

Agreed. They travel better as stones. Once they are safe on the counter, they can become soft and delicate for eating once ripe or tucked away ripe in the fridge to last a few more days to a week for another time.

If I get any chance, and is sunny, i let them outside to ripen up. This actually works, it takes two or three days, but they're almost entirely and 100% naturally ripen. This trick works the best, especially for fruits like apples or bananas.

11th way? I specifically buy 20 rock hard avacados. Remove them from bag and place in refrigerator. Then, as i want to use them, i take out of refer and let them sit for a few days. It takes a bit of planning but it beats buying ripe avacados which are bruised, as i don't use ones that have discoloration (bad taste). I have kept them rock hard in refer for as long as 6 weeks. Don't know if they could keep longer. But am happy that i can have perfect avacados with a minimal of planning.

I had one the other day that was very green the day it was bought so I planned to use it in a few days accordingly and the next morning it was done. You will not know when an avocado is ripe until you press it lightly with your fingertips and it feels soft enough to mash. Could be overnight or it could be a matter of days. You will know when it is ripe by the way it feels. Over ripe avocados might as well be thrown away as they are brown and rotten. Sometimes you can salvage a part that has not turned brown. Do not buy over ripe avocados as you will be wasting your money. I don't understand how grocers can display these over ripe fruits or how people can buy them.

@@let_uslunch8884 Avocado goes with everything! If it ripens by surprise, all we do is putting it in halves on the table... But I'm in avocado land a.k.a Costa Rica, so that's kind of cheating. On the other hand, avocado is seasonal, so there's such a thing as too many avocados here. Knowing what to do with them when unripe is a welcome piece of information. unripe

I'd rather use microwave force softened avocados in my guac than too much cilantro. You can make up for the richness by incorporating a bit of olive oil. Up the garlic, introduce some cumin and you have something that will blow the minds of people who've only tasted store-bought guacamole without risking one in ten party people wondering why you added a bar of Irish Spring to the dip.

Hello Jared, i had to laugh at 15:00 ff when you said to give the pickle sauce drink to someone you don't like - Great Idea ! Maybe the salt method works better if you cut it in half and put the salt on the cut all around or remove the seed and fill it with salt you wash off before eating. With the Vegeta it is of Yugoslavian origin. The word and the Es are spelled similar to the word Energy with a fast V in front. Did you know there is a version of Vegeta with more vegetables and less salt in it? I wish you a nice and contemplative christmas time and thank you for the interesting test run.

I gave up because for now, I have to depend on Instacart shoppers and can’t really trust their avocado-assessing abilities. I’ve been fooled too often myself. So now I’m getting frozen diced avocados. They’re pretty good, actually. I repackage in 2oz portions so they don’t all fuse into one frozen glob. They thaw pretty quickly and the pieces can be easily pried off with a knife. I like to eat them by themselves or maybe sliced on crackers. I usually freeze avocados anyway since the alternative is to eat the whole thing. Have never managed to successfully store half an avocado in the fridge. Mash with lemon juice and freeze flat in zip sandwich or snack bags. They thaw quickly. Half a Haas avocado per bag for me. Another option is to get small sealed packages of mashed avocado. They can be kept in the fridge for a while, but I freeze those and they thaw pretty quickly. Kroger’s Simple Truth brand has them in 4-packs, probably about 2oz in each. There are other brands doing the same thing with guacamole, but a simple Truth is the only one I’ve found so far that just has plain avocado.

i used to freeze blended avocado with squash and bananas and chocolate powder/protein powder and put dollops of nut butter in there then microwave it when i took it out of the freezer to soften it up a bit. i think blended coconut shreds would go well in there too i know i used to add other things

Wow, this has been very useful. Really appreciate the comparison. My takeaway is just wait until they are ripe.

My parents use brown paper bags(or newspaper) , put the avocados in the bag or wrap it in a few layers of newspaper, with out cutting it and leave them in the pantry for 3-4 days until they ripen. During avocado season, i always make avocado toast for breakfast with lemongrass tea

Both the flavor and texture of avocados is directly proportional to the oil content, which increases as the fruit matures on the tree. The ubiquitous Hass is harvested over a 7-month period, the oil content increasing the longer the fruit remains on the tree. After harvest the fruit softens, but the oil content does not increase. If an avocado is harvested too early, it will not ripen into a delicious food no matter what you do to it. From the U of California avocado research station: "Fruit in commercial orchards is tested by determining the oil content at previously determined picking dates. Minimum standards for oil content have been set by the industry to assure high quality fruit on the market." ceventura.ucanr.edu/Com_Ag/Subtropical/Avocado_Handbook/Harvesting/When_to_pick_avocados_/

My avocadoes starting falling off the tree. They're not quite mature. Fried avocado with bitter gourd. Iron skillet. On a piece of toast. Tasty.

A possible solution, that requires prepping ahead of time, is to freeze ripe avocados. They defrost and are good for guacamole, not pretty enough for slicing as garnish, though. Freezing a bunch when you can get them on sale, is my m.o.

On the baked avocado, you should have used a couple quail eggs instead. They would fit better, and taste good too.
