Pepsi came out with Slice in the mid 80s. It was their answer to Sprite, but it was made with real juice. I loved Slice. Eventually they came out with their own line of Slice products including an apple soda. I wish they would bring that back. Making it with real juice makes a huge difference.

@@lennyo5165 So far, the only good tasting energy drinks I found were G-Fuel canned (also a clean lift and not as much caffeine), Bang (for taste, EXCEPT Chocolate and Birthday Cake) and Bucked Up. 4:22 - I loved Tab. It was the taste of my teen years. When they took it off the market, I bought all the cases that the local stores had. The problem with that plan is that, while the soda itself doesn't exactly go bad, the cans have a definite half-life. I noticed the soda was starting to taste "off," but then when I was finding empty, unopened cans, with the bins the cases were stored in were filling up with soda, I knew the cans were failing. I also loved 6:34 Jolt. I kind of wish I'd gotten to try Aspen.

"New Coke" was not a failure; it instead was one of the most brilliant marketing ploys in history. "New Coke" was never intended to be sold for the long term, but to make the public cry out for the original formula - immediately thereafter rebranded as "Coke Classic." Coca Cola was falling out of fashion with the MTV generation and this stunt brought it back to the masses permanently; in fact the masses demanded it!! Coca cola, I salute your marketing genius!!!

It was also a way to mask the shift from sugar to HFCS. All other sodas could make the transition in a single day without anyone noticing, but Coca-Cola could not. By keeping Coca-Cola off the market for a few months with this stunt, they accomplished the switch. You can see exactly what I mean about the HFCS not tasting right by comparing side-by-side a regular Coke and a Mexican (or a Passover) Coke.

Been drinking soda for almost 70 years. Difference between Coke and Pepsi is Coke uses orange as fruit base, Pepsi uses Lemon. Mt. Dew normally uses orange. I prefer orange. Dr. Pepper claims 23 & I'm sure different 'flavors' change around but I suspect plum. Plum is good but no sane person would make prune soda. Fresca is still around but if like me you live in a Pepsi area it can be hard to get. I like grapefruit somewhat, but if you do not I get it.I RC was still around a few years ago but I don't shop much now It's part of Dr pep-7 up partnership if it is. With Vernor's-I like Vernor's because most ginger ale, you just can barely taste anything. I'm fairly sure Pepsi owns most rights to Dr. Pepper across the country When I grew up you could barely get any Root Beer around here except for Hires or Dad's. I may not have seen Hires for decades I got some Dad's at a local chain up to a few years ago but then they stopped getting it. I liked blue Pepsi. But you can figure out why lemon coke went bust, & you never hear pepsi going orange. You know there's nasty orange disease, if it gets too bad I suspect Pepsi will go to watermelon Dew, just add sugar...

@@clydekimsey7503 Speculation: Bubble tea came along with general acceptance of Chinese food nowadays. So the path to people gradually accepting it was carved out well in advance, as it were? The sodas came out of nowhere with no supporting customs or culture around them? Also tea or coffee with milk is a very traditional drink in the west in a way that sodas are not, might have had something to do with it? I do remember, when I was in Taiwan, I immedately took to bubble tea but hardly tasted the fruit sodas with jelly in them.. The milkiness of the tea seemed to be more in keeping with finding unusual tapioca balls in the drink where I seem to recall finding it in a soda was a little weird. We add milk to cornfakes, porridge and other foods so maybe our psychology is more in tune with milky drinks mixing with other foods rather than sodas? For a long time the Eastern peoples didn't drink much if any milk so they added water for example, to rice as they still do, to make a porridge. Sp perhaps when the jelly-mixed sodas began, they were better attuned to finding other foods in watery drinks than we would be? As I say just speculation but it's interesting how culture influences people.

I worked in a grocery store in the 80's when the Coke rep came in with some New Coke. He gave me a can, put some ice in a glass and poured it in. Took a big gulp and then spit it on the floor. He looked at me like I had ran over his dog. I told him how nasty it was. He got mad and said "Well get used to it because that's what Coke is switching to". We couldn't give that stuff away. Pepsi started selling more than New Coke. Six months later, Coke Classic was on the shelves. Coke picked up all the New Coke and gave us credit.

Part of the reason Crystal Pepsi failed is that Coke introduced a Crystal version of Coke and intentionally made it bad. This helped end the Crystal soda pop idea.

Other defunct (or mostly...) sodas that were popular (or at least had a niche market): 1. Clearly Canadian (1987-2009; apparently it has existed again since 2012 but I have not seen it...) 2. Fresca sweetened with saccharin [my late mother's preference in it] (1969-2004) 3. Pepsi Blue (2002-04; why, just why?) 4. Sierra Mist (1999-2023; what will Taco Bell do?) 5. Slice (1984-1999; yes, Pepsi Co's attempt at competing with 7-Up & Sprite before Sierra Mist [see #4], which replaced their earlier attempt "Teem" [1959-84])

If you're going to call it "Worst Drinks", then there MUST be mention of Canfield's Chocolate Soda. That stuff was an affront to the laws of God and man. It wasn't like YooHoo or Chocolate Soldier - no, this stuff tasted like chocolate Faygo. It was awful. Truly awful.

If I am not mistaken, the New Coke/Coke Classic episode was when the soda companies started to put high fructose corn syrup into the products rather than cane sugar.
@dearthditch

Yeah. When they brought back “Classic Coke” along side “New Coke”’for awhile they used cane sugar but eventually made it like “New Coke”, with corn syrup. At some point later they even sold a Coke that advertised that it used cane sugar. Cant remember what they called it

@@dearthditch I think it was called Crappa-Cola. I remember New Coke in the 80s, it sucked! Dumb idea on their part because people started drinking Pepsi instead. So Coke brought back Coca-Cola and called it "Classic" GTFOH!

It was debated at the time whether the introduction of "New Coke" was just a marketing ploy to drum up enthusiasm and publicity for regular Coke. Unlikely; but there was certainly a lot of publicity at the time: taste tests, audience surveys, New Coke v. Pepsi, etc.
