Natural Disasters, 1990's the Philippines easily comes to mind. I think it was 1991, they were hit with a huge earthquake and three consecutive hurricanes, decimating the country. No aid offered, and hardly a blip on the news. I only know about it because a mate of mine was Filipino, he lost his grandparents, two Aunts, and seven cousins in an earthquake in Luzon.

The Mt. Pinatubo eruption probably didn't make the list because of the relatively low death toll compared to others in the list.

Totally agree But the fact is that the Mt Pinatubo eruption had the greatest impact on the planet in that decade It lowered the global temperature by 1/2 a degree for 3 years And this was only a 6 on the Vei scale So what will happen when we have a Vei 7 or 8 The level of destruction will be of the scale and the modern world could come to a grinding holt ( Vei = volcanic explosive indexed) 5 Mt Saint Helen's 6 Mt pinatubo 7 Mt Tombora 8 Yellowstone eruption =The end So to cap up volcanos are deadly on a global scale Only Asteroids are in the same category

IM still surprised hurricane George isn’t in the list. This category 3 hurricane made landfall in Dominican Republic on September 22, 1998. Its sustained winds up to 195 miles per hour destroyed 60000 homes and radio communication systems, even the international airport of the Americas was affected with flooding. More than 1000 people died, 1053 injured, and 146 reported missing. All in all, this destroyed the nation’s economy almost 19 years after cyclone David in 1979 and tropical storm Federico just a week later in the same year.

I respect Princess Diana for her work to abolish the use of land mines and thought it was extremely heartwarming to see her holding the hands of people who had H.I.V/A.I.D.S and also holding babies whose parents had the virus. It is extremely surprising that Princess Diana was frequently depressed and bulimic as well as having made numerous suicide attempts while she was married to Prince Charles. The three most well-known suicide attempts by Princess Diana consisted of her flinging herself down a flight of stairs, hurtling herself into a glass cabinet and slashing her arms and chest with a pen knife belonging to Prince Charles.

Alright, Monserrat 1995-1997 deserved, IMO to be on the list for historical significance, because that (at that time) wiped out an entire island and affected several other Caribbean islands who were having to take in refugees, and led to the toppling of the Monserratian government at the time. And led to the world's only capital city with a population of 0, as well. No, it didn't kill thousands of people, but for sheer impact I feel like it should be there really. EDIT: Oh and Kobe clamed the world famous Barings Bank as well due to the financial impact. Short version was Nick Leeson made a bunch of ultra aggressive investments and the earthquake killed the markets and with it, Leeson's investments and the bank collapsed due to it. There's way more than that, so read up on it, it's fascinating stuff

If fatalities were less of a factor in the rankings and the list were a Top 20, one disaster that would be of note here was the 1999 Bridge Creek-Moore (Oklahoma) tornado, an F5 packing radar-measured winds of 301 mph at its peak. It caused $1 billion in damage, decimating several neighborhoods in the southern suburbs of Oklahoma City. 36 died (a few of which were to people who hid in underpass girders when the tornado sideswiped bridges and were severely injured or sucked out) and 583 were injured.
