@@bjornolson21 it is annoying when the Patches clearly say do not pet (or distract, etc) my dogs Patches clearly has a stop sign that says SERVICE DOG DO NOT PET " on both sides of his vest. It's true some handlers don't mind if you pet there dog, however the ppl who really don't want it generally put on patches that say do not pet, or something along those lines, so we don't have so answer questions a thousand times a day on ppl asking to pet. But ppl can't seem to read Patches or follow them. 🙄 sometimes we want to go get a gallon of milk without being stopped every 3 steps we take! The general rule of thumb, is treat a SD handler like u would treat a person. If u wouldn't stop a stranger and ask to pet there kid, or start a random conversation, don't do it to a handler. And if someone really can't help themselves, they should at least see if the vest specifies do not pet before even asking! Because even with spefic Patches that say don't pet, ppl don't listen. Thats whats super annoying is it's clear as day marked on him!

No, and medical insurance do not cover them eathir because there a living medical equipment. It is extremely expensive too. The average service dog cost $250,000 - $500,000 depending on what your training them for and how fast the dog learns. A example a guide dog takes about 3-4 years of training. A PTSD service dog takes 1-2 years of training. The cost also depends on if your owner training or getting a program dog.

I am blind and have a wonderful golden retriever guide!! My biggest annoyance since becoming blind is the fact that no one will speak to me directly! They will always ask the person I am with..."Does she want this, does she want that?" It's a constant challenge for independence but in my pursuit of independence I got my guide dog!! He's change my life in the most positive ways!! People even talk to me more now.... but mostly to ask about my dog!! LoL Keep up the great work Molly!! Amazing is definitely the word, Molly. Before I became bed bound I had a service dog named Mattie. One of the most amazing things was the change in her demeanor which came over her when I put her harness on her. She would go from standard "I wanna have fun! let's go have fun!" dog behavior to 100% concentration in an instant. As long as she was in harness she had a laser-like focus on her job. When we got home, off would go the harness, and off would go Mattie, going in search of her frisbee which was her favorite possession. I had more to say, but I'll have to wait. Tears in the way.

This bothers me so much. Like even when people do this with animals that aren't service animals, but especially with animals that are service animals. I used to work at a petting zoo/pony ride place. People would try to feed our animals all the time, even with us politely asking (the first couple times at least, and then maybe not so politely anymore after that) them not to feed the animals. At least half the time they would get super annoyed at us and we would have to explain to them how the animals can only eat certain things or how they might be on a special diet cause of reasons and even then they would still sometimes be annoyed. It was so frustrating! I can't even imagine how much more frustrating it must be when you add in the the animal being a service animal.

Thank you for this video! I am blind since birth and traveled with four dog guides over 20 years. Your commentary is so well put! In addition to what you said, I don’t like it when people call me mom and treat my dog like it’s my little baby. That infantilizes her and demeans the team effort of our working relationship. She is my right hand almost. We are a team and a true partnership built a Mutual respect for one another. I think treating the dog like a child diminishes the relationship that really exist. She is more than just a pet and Our relationship has so many more dimensions to it. My dogs have saved my life! They have kept me from getting killed from oncoming traffic from drivers who run red lights, and from falling into open manholes in the street. I believe that a working relationship with a service animal is one of the deepest relationships that mankind can have with a dog. I feel blessed beyond words to have such a meaningful relationship with a dog! I asked the general public to give our dogs the respect they earned and deserved for keeping us in safe travel every day. And it’s a little known fact that these dogs work for us because they want to work, not because they have to work. You cannot make a dog guide a person if they don’t have the will to do so. Molly, thank you for what you do on behalf of our blind community.

I work at a vet clinic and obviously, we get a lot of dogs coming in that are fearful and jumpy. They actually had to fire a kennel technician that would walk up to random dogs in the lobby and start petting them and giving them treats without asking the owner first - and some of these dogs were visibly distressed.
@ReganFree935 жыл бұрын
Rebecca Abrams yea we recently moved and finding a vet willing to work with aggressive dogs is tough. We have to go in before they even open, I give him Benadryl to slow him down, then they sedate him, do the work/checkup, then we load him in the car while he wakes up. It’s a process and expensive but our old vet was amazing. She never charges for sedation or coming in early. She was just happy he was getting care despite his fearfulness. Our new vet has tried to blame us for him being aggressive and thinks she’s gonna magically change him with treats. I told her he will not take treats from a stranger and it will only get him stressed even more if you continue to try. He got his shots but we are still looking for a new vet. She also charges for 2 appointment since she had to come in early, sedation, and for a private waiting room. We find that rural/large animal vets are the best for us as they don’t nickel and dime and will let us do the shots ourselves to not stress him out so much.

I wish your videos were captioned. As someone who talks a lot about accessibility, it hurts to know your videos are not accessible. d/Deaf people, HoH people, and those with auditory processing disorders rely on captions to consume auditory media. While many people argue that youtube auto captions videos, those captions often mess up and if there is ANY sort of background noise in the video, the captions won't even come close. I have a service dog and I have missed several very important doctor appointments thanks to Uber not being trained that they don't have the right to deny their services to me. My dog is a Siberian Husky who I have groomed and take excellent care of to be totally sure she doesn't shed because I am in medical facilities a lot. I'm hyper aware of whether she is shedding at all or if her paws get dirty or whatever might be the reason someone might deny me access with her, because of her so I stay very on top of those things. I called Uber each time I waited for my ride through them and they refused to take me. One day it happened 3 times in a row for the same appointment, 3 drivers came and all three refused to take me with my dog. I absolutely understand they are very concerned about the cleanliness of their cars but unfortunately it's their job and it's against the American Disability Act which makes it illegal. Punishable by really nothing because I lost certainly can't afford a lawyer to sure Uber so they can really do what they want. And Uber couldn't care less. They don't train their drivers, the drivers aren't typically aware of these laws and for some of them it wouldn't matter anyway. Uber won't punish them or even train them properly or explain what the ADA laws are. We are in a time period where nothing is really taken seriously. They hire anyone off the street who has a license, registration and proof of insurance and a decent driving record. They could be anybody, sex offender, drug addict, their who is willing to hurt someone to get what they want. Anyway, I have had to stop using them because they are so unreliable when it comes to my dog and it upsets me so much when I am discriminated against in that way. I can't miss these appointments. One of the ones I missed was for a genetic specialist who I waited 2 years to see and I was placed on the back of the waiting list again when I cancelled it at the last minute thanks to not having a ride to get there on time. Very upsetting.

My 6 year old daughter has an eye condition where she has a high probability of losing her vision in her late teens or early 20s so I really appreciate your videos. Her vision is actually very, very good for her condition right now. She uses a white cane but she also has level 1 autism and is a huge sensory seeker. She is obsessed with cats and dogs. It's very difficult to get her to leave dogs alone. We went on a field trip some months back and one of the dads, who was a veteran, brought his service dog. My child was having a very difficult time staying away from the dog. Thankfully, the farm we visited had farm dogs who love being petted and the owners have no problem with it so it was a good diversion, but still a problem because she was so focused on the farm dogs. When we got back on the trailer to finish the tour, the guy with the service dog came and sat right next to us. I really wanted to say something to him. It was obvious to everyone that my child was having issues staying away from the dog, why did the guy sit right next to us? He had already told her to stay away from the dog with a bit of edge in his voice. He knew it was hard for her. So frustrating. It felt like he was trying to test her or something. It's very hard for her to stay away from any dog, including working dogs. We talk about it all the time. I'm constantly reminding her to stay away. The last time we ran into a working dog, we were at the zoo and she made a bee line to the dog. Thankfully, I think my constant reminders to her are finally working because the second she headed towards the dog, I called my daughter's name and she changed direction away from the dog. I've been thinking about my daughter's future and the thought that maybe she'll have a guide dog some day is a possibility. I always wonder how she would handle people distracting her dog some day. I also wonder how she would handle losing a dog. I get extremely attached to animals and wouldn't allow pets in my house for that exact reason. I can't deal with their dying. I watched your video about Gypsy's death and that was rough. I'm sorry for your loss even though I know it was a long time ago. Clearly, she was extremely important in your life.

Omg girl I feel you on that outstretched arm issue!! I did a job that I held instrument panels for vehicles and my arm was outstretched like that 6 hours a day! I only did that job for 2 years but I have a permanent shoulder injury from it. I literally feel your pain but am grateful that I had the option to quit, you don’t have that luxury but you already know you’re a champ!

My service dog is a seizure alert dog and she gets very upset if she can not see me. So I think it so cute that you didn’t want Gallop to hear what you were saying. I agree having a service dog is a lot of responsibility and it took me a while to adjust to having my service dog. Now it is just part of my life. She is my child.

My favourite are the "oh, so beautiful" comments as I'm walking by. I've started owning those comments and I'm like "I know I am! I really should be a model."

I think you should do a video on the process a dog goes through becoming a guide dog. I'm defiantly interested in knowing the process! ALSO you are the best and i love watching your videos!

Molly your story is so inspirational to me. I have cerebral palsy and was bullied when I was younger too. I did have friends growing up but would always question their intentions because of my disability and why they’d want to hang out with me and even though I’m a very friendly person I don’t like to have too many friends and I’m very happy with myself and I love myself and if people can’t accept me for who I am then I don’t need that person in my life. I’m a very positive person and I don’t need negative energy in my life. I love the channel and keep up the great videos

I'm owner training my service dog right now. I appreciate your video! I think the biggest challenge I experienced at the beginning was feeling too anxious to go out with her. With the epidemic of "fake service dogs", I was so scared when she made mistakes. Now that she and I have a lot more experience, it's easier to be confident.

My daughter has the same issue. She’s three, so it’s such a struggle to control the “oh man, a dog in a place I don’t expect a dog! Letmeloveit!” So we’ve trained her to (very quietly) say “Good job puppy. You’re so good at working!” She can share the love and not distract the dogs from their work.

I think learning self restraint with dogs in general is important. My general rule is not to distract any dog (service or not) when they are clearing on a walk where the owner is trying to get somewhere. I will approach non-service dogs (and try my best to ask) if someone is just chilling with their dog, or it someone is standing stationary near me and the dog takes interest. When you learn to just respect a dog’s personal space (I know, seems silly when many don’t respect yours haha) and their owners, the service dog thing is less difficult. And it’s so important to teach this to kids so they don’t spook or overexcite a dog and get injured.
