WWE in the PG era basically was like SNL. The guest hosts era was basically a platform for big names who have something to promote can go to, and in turn WWE can leech a bit of their star power.

I wish WWE would circle back and publicly recognize Chris Benoit as the great sports entertainer that he was, but also mention that the actions that he has done to himself and his family are more than just frowned upon. Like make an official documentary about Benoit, about his tenure, about CTE, and about his relationships with the locker room during his time. Celebrate his work; shame his actions.

I agree. Cte studies have gone a lot further since then, and it affects athletes in mma, boxing, and even football
@claytonmize6159
@claytonmize6159 Жыл бұрын
@@HectorPryorYT Problem is WWE would have acknowledge their part in the CTE and they don't want to do that. Hell anyone should go back and look at Benoit's matches and look at the crazy bumps he took to his head. Including taking a suicide dive into a chair shot to the head from Edge at full velocity. The diving headbutt being another contender for also causing CTE especially since he did it off a damned Steel Cage. People demonize Benoit but don't want think that the Brain damage could have easily caused him to do what he did to his wife and kids, then when he came out of the fog he then ended his own life. Doctors looked at his brain and his brain was that of an 70 plus year old with either dementia or alzheimer's from the repeated shots he took to the head. Last I checked anyone that has had a serious brain injury has gone through similar things just not as extreme. Antonio Brown for example has gone through some insanely crazy antics after take the infamous hit that literally made him go completely limp from a cheap shot to the head from Vontaze Burfict. This is why I would like the wrestling business to retire the diving headbutt as well as the chair shots to the head before another situation like Benoit can occur. The thing is we may never know for sure how Benoit actually was behind closed doors but the repeated shots to the head most definitely doesn't help it. Demonize the actions of the murder-suicide while also understanding that he most likely was not in the right frame of mind based on Doctor's own analysis of his brain after his death.

Did you know that at one point, WWE was so distant on the whole Chris Benoit incident that any relatives of the family were banned from WWE outright, any references on TV made by the stars resulted in massive fines. And in a few reddit posts from 2015 to 2020 some WWE fans noted they had their Network accounts permanently banned because they searched up Benoit. Also when Daniel Bryan was using the diving headbutt as a signature move. WWE told him hes not allowed to use the move ever again. He wasnt given a reason why but fans speculated they didnt want another Benoit incident to happen

Conard Thompson read out a live account of what Jerry Lawler said before a match with Ahmed Johnson after IYH 8 (in what was actually *scheduled* to be a dark match) during his podcast with Bruce Prichard. Apparently, King called a black woman in the crowd "sambo", and told Ahmed that "it's a good job the lights came back on, or I would never have been able to see you", or something to that effect. A week later Goldust is suggestively eating a family sized chocolate bar while cutting a promo on Ahmed...

Ironically, WWE could have easily capitalized on Booker T beating Triple H in a big way. Having a black man as World Heavyweight Champion could have benefited them from a diversity standpoint. Having various champions from different backgrounds can definitely elevate the company. Booker T certainly had the charisma and the ring savvy to be a top star at the time. But instead, they put him in a storyline with racist undertones, and jobbed him at WrestleMania.

Some of these it used to be called getting heat. When you're a bad guy, you're supposed to be offensive and piss people off. Jim Cornett said it best. How can you be a good heel when you can't offend or piss anybody off? A few of these are a given Jared Benoit. But most of this video it should be more like segments. Today's weak society cannot handle. I used to love pro wrestling. Unfortunately it's gotten way over scripted way over censored and it's just not pro wrestling anymore. Just a horrible sitcom. I also miss storytelling in the ring. I don't care if you can do 5,000 flips in 3 minutes. That does not make a good match. They need to take a lesson from flair, less is more. Stop trying to do a million moves in 3 minutes. There is no selling and it just looks horrible.

As a huge Benoit fan I find it incredibly disheartening that the WWE abandoned Chris and did nothing about his obvious deteriorating mental health after Eddie passed away. He should be honored for his contribution to Pro Wrestling and remembered a an example of untreated mental health issues. Hindsight is always 20/20 but I believe the WWE missed a massive opportunity to at the time become a sports leader in head/brain trauma, addiction and be a key factor in "normalizing" mental health therapies. Instead they've erased his legacy, even though he was a key factor in the headshot chair ban, which should be named the Benoit Rule. Yes he did a horribly disgusting monstrous thing to which there is no defending those actions, but the WWE assisted in making the monster and their lack of preventative action cannot be ignored.

To me, all the racist segments (not the black face) were great and yeah, it was a different time. You see... To me, villanous people do bad things and they were all heel characters (racism is a bad thing). The reaction from Booker was always comic and great because he was great. In the Triple H match though all would have gained a lot of meaning if Booker would have won the match against the racist HHH. That was the mistake.

He's said on his podcast that in summer of 1999 he said to Vince that he couldn't remember where he lived anymore and would be circling the block trying to find his house and was having trouble remembering basic things. For as much as the Rock has cultivated the lovely, ‘nicest guy in Hollywood’ persona, he will always be the guy who took liberties with someone else’s health in that 1999 match. You didn’t need to be a CTE or brain damage specialist even back then to know that smashing somebody on the head with a chair multiple times was batshit. The fact Foley agreed to 3 and The Rock decided to nearly quadruple that will always show just what kind of person he can be. I’ve always held a little bit of contempt in my heart for him after that match.

Apparently it was a timing issue where they weren't where they needed to be for the planned finish, so they had to extend that moment much longer than it should have been, but Rock could have done literally anything else instead of wailing on his head.

@@spacequack5470 WWE didn't know much more about CTE than the wrestlers did. So how can anyone get sued over it. Unless WWE knew about it, and kept it from wrestlers, I would argue that it is just as much the responsibility of the wrestlers to educate themselves about it as for the medics and the company. Also, there was always more chance of getting head trauma as a wrestler, than say, as an office worker. They chose that profession, because it is their dream. They should be protected, but also need to take personal responsibility for their job choice. Ask any wrestler, if they had their time over, would they choose to be a wrestler again, or have a safer, albeit boring profession, a normal 9 to 5 job with little chance of CTE. Most would still want to wrestle, as they are doing their dream job. Society is too quick to sue and blame everyone else for their own choices and not take personal responsibility for their decisions, Also, wrestlers make enough to be able to cover their own medical expenses. Or they can get insurance. That is the test. Will insurance companies cover CTE and to what extent? That should tell the client how dangerous their sport is perceived. The only people who win in lawsuits are lawyers. CTE is serious, but wrestlers need to protect themselves as well. What's next? Suing for arm injuries, neck injuries. Wrestlers should get insurance (which WWE might contribute something to) and then they are covered and it can be kept out of the courtroom.

Why everyone has became so insensitive? Wrestling is like a movie. Where there is a villain and a hero, a underdog and a bully. It’s all well if it ends well means if in the story a hero has overcome the villain and the underdog has overcome the bully with all the crowd behind him gives a fine message to the kids and audiences just like movies do. Jindar and tripleh meant to be heel what they did was to generate heat. Clearly they were showcased as villain not hero but yes triple h should have lose after that storyline that’s where the problem lies. In movies you can show dark characters you can twist and turn real life events, you can clearly show a real life villain as hero. You can glorify taboos like incest yet you can’t do it in wrestling why?? It’s also a art of storytelling so why not I never understand.

You def need to make longer lists. You missed 2 gimmicks that have aged terribly. Maybe make a follow up list with 10 more. One thing to add is Zach Gowen being senslessly beaten by Brock Lesnar & abused by Vince McMahon. It was a story angle that dealt with Zach being an amputee. Being bullied because of a disability is terrible and would not work in today's wrestling. Secondly would be Eugene. His character being "mentally challenged" would be horendous now. But it was extremely distasteful back when he wrestled too.

You are correct, sir. I am a 90's kid and I have come to appreciate my childhood so much more in the past 7 years or so and videos like this warm me up with so much awesome nostalgia of the great MAINSTREAM entertainment of the 90's. There was no Cancel Culture even just 15 years ago, so Wrasslin' in the 90's was Cool and Counter Coulter. I remember in the 8th grade, DX t shirts were BANNED from school because of their iconic catch phrase Suck It! (But of course banning us from wearing DX stuff only made us rebel and wear them more.) Let me finish my point by asking this: If there was a Degeneration Z faction, what would their catchphrase be? "Suck It...or Lick It...I don't know. I haven't decided yet. It's complicated."
