Austin is right in the regard that his match with Lesnar should have been a PPV match. His statement doesn't mean he was against putting Lesnar over because he said he would do it on PPV. It put more money in the pockets of the 3 entities involved (Austin, Lesnar, and WWE) and it would have raised Lesnar stock more defeating Austin at a PPV than on free tv. The fact he is on this list when he literally stated he would do it when it would benefit Lesnar more to win on PPV is not selfish. It would be more money in Brock's pocket.

Another thing about the booking decision to have Austin lose to Lesnar in a first round loss kinda undermines Austin's accomplishments and his statis in wwe, so that's definitely not on stone cold that's clearly on Vince McMahon for making that decision

I agree with both of your statements it would have made Brock, Austin and WWE more money for being on a pay-per-view instead of live TV
@brandialexis7859
@brandialexis7859 Жыл бұрын
I don't think it necessarily undermines Austin's accomplishments, what it would have done is set up the shock factor. The problem is how do you then carry that over. Bearing in mind this was for the King of the Ring tournament and Austin was the top guy, so yeah, you score the upset win over him on Raw, but who do you face in the next round to keep that momentum for the final? Alternatively you have someone else do the job for Brock on Raw, someone else puts Austin over and they meet in the semi finals at the PPV.. the commentary can then use the shock win Vs one of the outright favourites earlier in the night to sell Lesnar in the main event. It's really not that difficult to see and tbh it was almost 100% Vince being stubborn and Austin being tired and beat up that meant the two just butted heads instead of figuring it out

They were greats, unfortunately, they were great enhancement talents. They really weren't the "stars" of the show. But moreso, the guys that helped US as fans, mentally view the stars as stars. The WWE consistently prioritizes letting their popular, older characters win instead of letting new characters gain popularity. This is an inherently unsustainable strategy, because old wrestlers like Goldburg or Hogan inevitably get to the point that they can't wrestle anymore. If all you do is let the legends win, by the time they decide to retire, there will be no one worthwhile to take their place. The fact that WWE today is so disappointing is a direct result of old WWE stars not accepting a loss to bring the new generation in.

What's funny is that Cena actually has quite a large list of people he HAS put over before, and even in the cases he didn't he wasn't necessarily pushing to stop them being put over...with one exception. From what I've heard, he was frustrated at the time because he felt his whole body just hurting constantly. This was just a few months before he had to retire in 2003, so it's safe to assume that he wanted to go out with a bang instead of being buried immediately by new talent.

Him walking out was built up frustrations with the direction of creative and other things, them not listening to him saying a built up fued is the way to go was the last straw that put him over the edge. I do agree it was a bit much to walk out the way he did and as long as he did but do also understand, it happens in our everyday jobs too. I feel if austin went through with the match it would not only hurt austin but would have damaged brocks push as the next big thing with the fans. Having a newcomer beat the top guy in an unannounced king of the ring qualifying match. Austin was looking out for everyone, himself, brock and the company
