When my now 34 year old son was young, we raced R/C cars. Electric cars indoors in the winter, "gas" (actually glow fuel) cars outdoors in the summer. Nothing even approaching this scale, of course, but a fantastic way to build a relationship with him, and instill in him some valuable life skills. The outdoor races were always in some hardware store parking lot or the like until, one day, one of the fathers did just this, but on an R/C scale. He figured a permanent track would be much better than chasing permissions in businesses' parking lots. Well, it didn't take long for the local Karen to shut it down, complaining about the noise. So we switched to electric outdoors as well. Didn't matter. She just couldn't stand to see kids and parents having fun together, and we couldn't match her funding, nor her tenacity in court. The world is full of people like her.

I'd investigate local rules and regulations for "hog farms." Here's a story...a friend had a mini farm. A contractor bought the land next-door. He found they were going to put the entrance to the subdivision right next to the driveway of his to his house. He politely asked them to put it at the far end of their property because of the traffic. They refused. He then installed a 4x8 sign saying, "future site of xyx hog farm" at his driveway. He found out he could legally put up the sign for 30 days, but would have to remove it after that. It'd stay up for 30 days, come down, then be put back up 30 days later. They took him to court and lost. Who would want to buy a lot thinking there might be a hog farm built next-door? The contractor relented and moved the entrance to the far end of the property. This guy might want to consider making it his driveway. I bet there's nothing wrong with a kid riding his go-kart in his driveway. The neighbors are being an azz in my opinion.

Better he have a racetrack in his own back yard than illegally racing on the streets like they do in Baltimore. Most areas have a reasonable noise ordinance that people have to comply with but as long as they are not disturbing people at night, people should put up with a little noise during the day. I’m sure every neighbor at some point is disturbing another’s peace with noise they make with their mowers, electric saws, leaf blowers, etc. Think about this before you complain about the noise your neighbor makes.
@jonathanpayne558826 күн бұрын
Sitting in the seat of a riding mower with the blades engaged is about 85 decibels of noise. That is right at the beginning of hearing damage level of noise with long term (15 plus minutes) exposure. An ATV, dirt bike, or go-kart, several hundred feet away, revving while racing, is closer to 120 decibels. That is hearing damage in seconds. These "I can do what I want on my own property" people are either too stupid to know how noise works or just so poorly raised they are fine with causing physical damage to another person. Yes, everyone creates noise that travels onto other people's property and some allowance needs to be made for those things. But construction of an addition, mowing, cutting up a fallen tree with a chainsaw, replacing a roof, etc... are all significantly quieter than racing engines and are usually very short term disturbances. I don't care what someone does on their own property, but if they aren't keeping it on their own property then they are really whining because they want to be able to do whatever they want on everyone else's property.
@Callsign_Sturm18 күн бұрын
@jonathanpayne5588 That's funny because I have a race header tuned go kart that gets raced around the neighborhood during certain hours and the noise falloff is about 30 feet if it's not WOT. Much less with the race muffler which prevents the go kart from cracking off the fences. My cammed 350 can't even be heard from inside a house and it's got a mean high flow on it.
@jonathanpayne558818 күн бұрын
@@Callsign_Sturm At testing RPM (not wide open), ATV exhausts should be around 95 to 100 decibels around 2 feet from the exhaust. If wide open, that will be higher, if older and worn it will be higher, if the exhaust has been intentionally altered it will be higher (unless the owner is actually trying to get the noise down to go on trails or with groups that actually implement sound restrictions). Some people are very proud of themselves for making 120 to 130 dB at full throttle. Decibels drop off at about 6 dB per distance doubled. To get from 130 dB to a non hearing damage level 85 or fewer would require about 250 feet. To get to a 70 dB at property line restriction that is in place in some areas would require about 2000 feet. If, at 30 feet away, your go kart is quiet, as in not causing hearing damage, while being raced around the neighborhood it is an anomaly.
@Callsign_Sturm18 күн бұрын
@jonathanpayne5588 Couple of things; I'm using a predator 212 at around 3400RPM with a 12" open flanged header pipe. (These can run 6000+ built so mine is very mild). The orientation and type of exhaust is important for how sound is transmitted. It's why muzzle brakes make everyone else deaf but not the person behind it. I have zero interest in conforming to public ORV requirements as I always operate on private property. It's tuned for torque. In testing, (And I have painfully sensitive ears), it's about the same as a moped but operates at much less annoying RPMs with a deeper tone. There's lots of trees and houses to trap the sound, but from letting other people run it and listen to them drive by, it's really not loud at all until you get about 15 feet because of how the exhaust is angled. I wouldn't want to drive it without earplugs or stand behind it coming out of a corner, but as long as you aren't directly in the path it isn't bad. Without the RLV open class can, it whips and cracks off the fences at WOT governed. I generally drive with the can on but it's really not that much different tone wise, Makes the bite less harsh, much less back pressure and faster torque response. Shocking really. Dads love to take their kids out on it and none of them bother to wear ear plugs. I wear plugs, it's definitely in the damaging threshold lol

Back when I was in highschool I had an old Karen neighbor always complaining about my "noisy bike" it was a 100cc 2 stroke moped that was my only transportation at the time, after she made a police report about it the police told her to never call about this on the emergency number again and told me the bike could be 10x louder and it wouldn't matter so that afternoon I sawed the end off the muffler and ripped all the baffles out of it and made it 10x louder just to spite her 😂😂😂

I had an uncle Lester also. Freddie, his son, who. was my cousin, had a go kart that they would let me use. This was around 1961. They had a fairly decent sized yard area that I would ride around on. There was a gas station next door, so one day I left the property and headed for the gas station to get a quarters worth of gas. Soon as I got off the property, the engine. stalled. I got off to restart it. Right. when I was getting ready to pull the cord. I heard Uncle Lester yell " Nooo!!" It was too late. When I pulled the cord the go-kart took off on its own. It had a throttle that would sometimes stick. I tried holding on to the cord, but it got pulled out of my hand. I was only 7 years old. It. took off down the road and kept going and went through a busy Miami intersection. Luckily it made it through the intersection without. causing an accident. It crossed the busy street and headed for the drug store, where it ran under a parked car and broke the steering wheel. It then hit the drug store curb and apparently the throttle became unstuck. It was sitting there idling. It was a close call, and we laughed about it for years to come. RIP Uncle Lester.

These are the same people who own horse farms and think it’s ok the neighbors have to smell shit 24/7.

Neighbors like that are the reason that there are so few Americans in the top levels of motorsports. Let the kid have his dream.

1000% great father. Don't miss the opportunity to teach your son to have a backbone, he'll need it on the track against other drivers who are just as determined and won't give in. You don't give in. Let them be mad. Pleasing everyone is impossible. Pissing off everyone is a piece of cake. Teach him to like cake.

Funny how people think their dreams or their kids dreams are more important than everyone else in the community. Maybe a lot of people have a dream of peace and quiet in their community!!!

Maybe they should mind their own business, then? LOL. If you want peace and quiet, don't live near other people's houses like in a neighborhood. You can't fix stupid.
