Ah, Populous... I actually played this with a friend, cross-platform over a modem. We said, well, what's the worst that could happen, it won't work? Yet it did. I played on my A500 and he on his XT (I think he had VGA at this point). Apparently the same modem protocol was used on PC and Amiga, so they speak the same language. I don't know if it was a selling point or anything, but it might possibly be the first modem-to-modem multiplayer game that worked cross-platform. Well, at least of the ones I played. Maybe Battle Chess also works like this; IDK. That would be older. That might be the first. There's an idea for a video - the history of multiplayer gaming.
@OldAndNewVideoGames
@OldAndNewVideoGames Жыл бұрын
WOW! That must've been something. Suddenly one of your favourite games became multiplayer and you could play it same way we play multi games today. You basically skipped few decades then and got to where we are now, multiplayer-wise that is. And yeah, that is an idea for a video. :)
@SeeJayPlayGames
@SeeJayPlayGames Жыл бұрын
@@OldAndNewVideoGames It wasn't one of my favorite games yet, and it didn't "become multiplayer." This was back in the day, like 1990-91 probably. Populous already HAD modem support in it, it's just that when we played it and it worked, that was the first time I ever played a modem game with someone running on a different platform. I had an A500, he had an IBM XT. The fact that it worked impressed me, between two computers that were otherwise incompatible with each other. I didn't "skip" any decades, metaphorically or otherwise; I lived 'em. I'm 51 years old, chief. I've had microcomputers of various types since I was like 10 years old. By then, I was about 20. And by the way, in case you're wondering, I won the game. And no, it's nothing like we do it now with modern games. Now it's over the internet whether you want to do it that way or not, and modems are relics of the past. You can't just direct dial a buddy and link modems, you gotta meet up on a server and make/join the same game or whatever. You wanna set up a LAN party and do it that way? Okay, but you're going to have to share the internet connection so everyone can pass a DRM check for their games in order for them to run. It is very different now vs. back then. Better, worse, yes to both. WOW. I've never had someone so thoroughly misunderstand a comment of mine outside of political discussions.
@OldAndNewVideoGames
@OldAndNewVideoGames Жыл бұрын
@@SeeJayPlayGames That's actually what I meant. Not that it literally became multiplayer, but you both had it on your respective (different) systems and could really only play it in single player (or multi but with others on the same platform but I figured out from what you said, that you didn't), but then decided to try modem connection and it worked. So, it suddenly "became" multiplayer (for you). I must've mis-explained myself on this one. xD And I understood everything perfectly, perhaps just did not give my best replying. I mean, I'm not a native English speaker, so from time to time (more often than not), what I say/write may sound a tiny itty bitty odd. ;)

Personally, I think the best Kick off game is "Goal!", it was also created by Dino Dini, and the major change is that it simulates inertia, so, people accelerate and slow down, and if you're good, you can do some insane stuff. The only problem is that it was released at the same time as Sensible Soccer, which was more accessible to most people, but I prefer Goal! for its deeper gameplay.

Interesting point. I won't try to fool anyone here and I'll admit that I sucked at both games. Big time. I was pretty decent at Sierra Soccer and there was another football game that I loved but cannot either remember its name now nor find it anywhere on the net, so I can even phantom a guess what it might've been. But I remember being it my absolute favourite.

Yeh, I loved Spy Vs. Spy on the Spectrum & was disappointed the Amiga version didn’t offer anything new. There was a quirky 3D game with maze elements to it on the Playstation that did try to brake new ground but even though my girlfriend & me had some fun with it, it was largely ignored. I love R-Type and the Amiga version both looks & sounds fantastic for the time, in fact it’s probably my second favourite version after the original Game Boy version that managed to give you the full gameplay experience on a handheld with a 4 colour display. Kick Off plays so well & looks so good on the Amiga! Silk Worm is awesom… but I’m playing the helicopter. 😄 Honestly I never got in to Sim City. I don’t get on with “games” that don’t have an ending. I don’t think I’ve ever played Battle Squadron? I’ll take a look. It came from the desert is one of the greatest games in the system & one that fully deserves the love it gets.

Oh, before I used someone else's recording for R-Type I've probably wasted like 2 hours trying to get anywhere in it. I just suck at it so badly. xD Also, no, I'm playing the helicopter! ;) I play Sim City/Cities Skylines to this day. xD Battle Squadron and Hybris blew my mind. I have no choice now, I will have to re-make my best shoot'em ups video. Not changing the first spot but I feel these two will both end up in top 5. They are so unexpectedly good. Funny enough I didn't appreciate It Came From the Desert years ago, I just felt back then that there was too much too read and not enough action. I wasn't the sharpest tool, it seems. ;)

Batman: The Movie - I only ever had a pirated copy of this game. I could do the first level, but I could never get past the second level where you drive the Batmobile. I always ran out of time, no matter how perfectly I drove. Maybe my copy was bugged, or maybe it wasn't properly patched for NTSC machines. I always had to turn on unlimited time to get any further into the game. Test Drive - I never really cared for these games either. Rick Dangerous - I liked this and I could complete the first level, but since you had to go all the way back to the start when you ran out of lives, I never had the stamina to memorize the second level. I always wished for a trainer that would let you choose the starting level. R-Type - The only way I could get through this game was with unlimited lives. Note that when you die, you either go back to the start of the level, or the halfway point, so I still had to do at least half the level without dying. Even with unlimited lives. it took me a long time to get through the game. Populous - I liked this one, although the sequel was better. Stunt Car Racer - I loved this game! I could never get the hang of the Drawbridge track though. I'd always go over it at the wrong time and end up crashing. I once had the opportunity to hook up two Amigas and play against a friend. There are a couple hacks of this. There's a TNT version, which stands for "The New Tracks", and a turbo version, which has a smoother framerate on faster machines. Also, the WHDLoad for this game supports applying the turbo patch to the TNT version as well. It Came From the Desert - I liked this one, but I couldn't complete it. I was never entirely sure what I needed to do. I once got far enough that I was commanding a tank in the middle of town. Then the game crashed. :(
@OldAndNewVideoGames
@OldAndNewVideoGames 2 жыл бұрын
Batman I played the most on C64. On Amiga I had it but it was a game I already "knew" so I preferred checking new titles out. Rick Dangerous II actually allows you to pick the starting level. Not the screen but level. It's not a great help but at least allows for trying all of them out. R-Type seems like a game for Souls-like lovers. It's a game that punishes a player who has not mastered it. It's not an incentive for me to carry on. I believe that most of us had similar problem with It Came From the Desert. We were to young back then, either to comprehend some of the underlying themes, or to care when we could be playing Mortal Kombat, Lotus, Moonstone or any other infinitely easier and more action packed game.
@lurkerrekrul
@lurkerrekrul 2 жыл бұрын
@@OldAndNewVideoGames I had Batman first on the Amiga, so that was the version I played most. R-Type, even when I had the levels memorized perfectly, it would take me dozens of tries to get through them. I think the only action game I was ever able to complete on the Amiga without chating, or using continues was Robocop. I memorized the whole game, so that I could be ready when each enemy came out. I knew the basic idea for It Came From the Desert, I just didn't know the mechanics of what to do. Apparently, the hive only opens up under certain conditions on certain days, and I never figured out how to find it. Plus, I didn't really like the day/night cycle of the game. Most of the time I'd get to a place and be told that it was closed and to come back in the morning, which wasted a lot of time. I liked Wings a lot better. :)

@@lurkerrekrul Well, if I can recommend two action games that are not only completable without cheating but also incredibly fun, and fun of hidden areas and secrets I would suggest both Super Frog and Fury of the Furries. You've indicated many games as requiring 1MB RAM but most did not in 1989. Box covers on MobyGames suggest that Shadow of the Beast and Batman the Movie did not. The Amiga 500 didn't get 1MB until 1991 I think, when first a RAM expansion was provided for free with the A500, then the 500 Plus was released in December with 1MB chip RAM built in. Batman came with the Amiga 500 in 1989, so it'd be a bit awkward if it couldn't be played😁

You may be right there, sir. Akthough I believe Dungeon Master from 1988 may have required 1MB of RAM. That said, whether it's the case or not, thanks for pointing it out, I'll look into it. Thanks! And yeah, I fear so myself. Especially that I know how many how great games I've planned for 1990. I might cut each mini review for games a sentence/two short just to save up that little time and will try to shave off some extra titles from the planned list. But I don't want to sacrifice the greats for the sake of video length. And yeah, I realise long videos are neither very popular, not digestible for most but I really don't wanna compromise the quality. It's a no win situation, it seems. So yeah, the 1990's video may break the 60 minutes mark but I'll try to keep it under...
