This is why complaints of hangars being "too expensive" are often short sighted. Yes, hangars are expensive, but what's more expensive is your airplane dropping 150k in value because it rotted out sitting in the elements.

My much smaller plane lives IN a hanger. Talked to my mechanics about this, he said there are big differences even after a year outside and he treats outside planes differently. I don't believe what was said about the paint on this. I wouldn't believe much on it in general unless I see it myself. 421s have monster geared engines, almost turboprop maintenance costs, a beautiful plane but it will eat your lunch and dinner too.@@spoze171

Great video Jimmy. Walk away, but I said that about Mighty Mouse. Loved flying the Aerostar. I think ours was a 601. It was so fast that the airline owner tore the gear doors off. Those are 777X folding wingtips. Most airliners (aluminum) pressurize to 8.6psi 8000 ft. Cabin altitude. The 787 (carbon fiber) pressurizes to 9.2 psi which gives you a 6000 ft cabin at altitude. 43,000.

Now that was a great ending on two fronts, you dumped the over priced, bad deal of an aircraft and jumped into an Aerostar. I grew up and lived in Santa Maria during the years when TSI came in to town and started manufacturing aircraft again. It was an everyday thing to see one zipping by on departure or approach. A guy I went to high school with was one of the test pilots and I was in awe. At the local airshow a bad a$$ Aerostar named "Zar" painted sinister black was flown by Jimmy Franklin. It performed aerobatics with smoke billowing from both engines. It was a sight to see. Thanks for the renewed memory of my home town involving the Aerostar. Bravo Jimmy!

Buck, thanks for clarifying, you may be right, I was in my teens back then, it’s been 40-50 years since that time, I just remember the Black Aerostar coming out of nowhere, doing low level, 300 mph passes on flight center, smoke billowing from both engines then going vertical, into a split-S and rolling out, that plane was so graceful and flew like it was on rails and the sound of the engines screaming in sync was exhilarating.

You’re going to have a few of the cylinders corroded because the valves remain open when the engine was shut off. The corrosion probably came from a high humidity area and all that humidity crawls right up the exhaust and right into the cylinders. I expect that if you get it started the corrosion on the valves will disappear and the rings will get some oil bringing the compression up. You did say the engines only had 520 hours or something like that.

I've worked on airports for over 25 years ago. There are two main ways I've seen this happen. 1. Change in circumstances (loss medical, loss of income, etc.) so it becomes a "well, we will get around to it once the circumstances change back" l. Meanwhile the aircraft basically rots and becomes a bigger and bigger burden to being back. I know of plenty of good flying airplanes that have now sat for a decade or two and would need work to even be a "plane on a stick". It's sad, especially because the owner still sees the beautiful flying machine they bought, not the reality of what it has become. 2. The owner passed and their estate wasn't set up to handle the plane. Whoever inherited it knows nothing about planes, literally Googles one and sees it sells for a certain amount and they will never budge from that price. I've also seen one where the family didn't know about it until we sent a certified letter for failure to pay rent. They never paid so it became abandoned and went through the long legal process of becoming airport property. Once that was done we auctioned it. Three times it never hit enough to pay it's cost, so it kept sitting and racking up cost. Eventually,it was sold for scrap and the airport got maybe 5% of the cost the airport had in it.

It's a shame he let that 414 rot away outside, but it's basically a parts plane at this point. It's too far gone to save. Being pressurized it's not worth what it would take to put it back in flying condition. All of the moisture infiltration means that the seals are gone and it's just done. Sad, but it should have been stored inside. The moisture certainly did its share of damage, but what the moisture didn't ruin, the sun baked the rest of the way to past the point of rescue. Honestly, a 414 is full of too many compromises, in my opinion. The fuselage is larger than the 340, but it's underpowered and you seriously sacrifice range with passengers and baggage. You can't fly it full fuel with 2 people on board, let alone bags. The 340 and 421 present far fewer compromises between range and payload. The 414 has great ramp presence, but it's kind of the red-headed step child of twin Cessnas. That's why I went from my A36TC Bonanza into a 421 Ram conversion before moving to the Conquest II I own and fly now. And you DON'T want an Aerostar if you aren't prepared to pay for the prodigious maintenance. Yes, they are wicked fast and fun to fly, but speaking as someone who had a low-time well sorted one years ago, I was happy to pass it along to the next owner once I got owning one out of my system. It was a maintenance queen and very expensive to maintain. Very finicky to maintain to my standards too. My mechanic spent more time working on mine than I spent flying it. There is a definite price for that performance. But when it was dialed in, it was invigorating and addictive to fly. It's definitely NOT the airplane to do "Jimmy Style". It will certainly bite you, if not kill you. It's a very unforgiving airplane if you do something stupid. It will bite you before you realize what you did.

Cessna T303 Crusader, one of the last ones manufactured would be an excellent choice. But you need to state more of your metrics for a better suggestion if that would not suit. The t303 has excellent handling characteristics and decent speed at altitude. The engines are flat rated so you can fly them balls to the wall all day long and easily cruise 190 knots plus

$100,000 for a $250,000 airplane means you'll put most of the %150,000 to get it in the air again. You may be able to find a flying one for less than the $150, 000 needed for repairs

Jimmy the ticking you are hearing are fuel pumps that are in the tip tanks. All the tip tank 400 series Cessna's have them. They come on anytime the master switch is turned on. Their purpose is to pump fuel from the back of the tip tanks to the front where the engine fuel pick ups are. In the early days these pumps were not installed and during high angle of attack climbs if the tip tanks were not full the engine fuel pick ups would become un-ported and engines starved of fuel. The pumps were then installed to prevent the engines of being starved of fuel.

“You can see the nose gear in the spinner” - this is what experienced pilots can teach any of us. One of the best instructors I ever flew with said to me one day while turning base “can you see our shadow on the ground, (i say yep, how cool), he responds “can you see any other aircraft shadows near us?”…… now, I always look even 15 years later.

Hi Jimmy. For a world tour airplane I doubt you will find an old general aviation recip you will want to do that with. Maybe a well kept King Air. Among other reasons, Avgas is getting scarce in many countries. Was recently discussing this very problem with some friends from across the "pond."

Jimmy, some altimeters had a vibrator in them so as to avoid stiction. That is probably the noise you heard and couldn't track down. Also, the big Boeing sitting out there is a 787-9 Dreamliner. It's the only one with fold up wing tips. They had to build it that way to fit in the terminal slots at the airports around the world.

1:07:20 static wicks , the aircraft on the Airfield where I work have these and they are so precious about them as they cost a shed load of money . Every time we do Aircraft familiarisation they make a big thing of don't twang those things ....Kill joys . We also have the Embraer Phenom 100 and we practiced gaining entry and lift out training of aircrew of said aircraft , any one that has been in one will know they are tight for space !!! . Well after us Firefighters broke several aircraft , being more fixtures and trim inside .....well it got expensive . So now we have a purpose built trainer for us on a trailer to use so we don't break the real thing . This thing has all the switches and levers etc we need for the shut down plus half the cabin , amazing job done by our Station work shops . I was tasked with asking Embraer if they had such a training aid ....a year later I was offered sales of second hand Phenoms on my email , I guess some thing got lost in translation .
