The greatest part about bloodborne, besides being the greatest iteration of lovecraftian lore, is the fact that you never knew it was lovecraftian to begin with until half way through the game. You go around as a beast hunter, during a full pale moon, fighting all sorts of beasts and monsters. Blood is a huge part of the game, but in the early stages you just assume blood is what turns man into beast, not realizing that it's gods, and the experiments of those gods, that turned man into beast with ancient cosmic blood. Insanely cool and interesting story line, with a big reveal of a night of hunting monsters, into the realization of cosmic entities and finding out the real truth of the world

@CeaselessPounding4 ай бұрын
@kingdoom5022 true, the entire game takes place in one night, but it's a night that doesn't end, until you either get cut out of it by Gehrman, or kill the moon presence, becoming a god yourself. Laurence and the healing church were giving people blood to "relieve them of any ailment" but it was transforming people into hideous monsters. Gerhman hunts those monsters but being only human, makes a pact with the moon presence, who doesn't like the other gods itself. Thus making the hunters dream, which links you to it making it so you can't leave unti the night is over. It's just an infinite loop pretty in one night.

Nux got a lot wrong during your analysis, but I feel like the biggest part of the lore that he misunderstood is usage of blood. The Healing church did not take the blood from people as a sacrifice to commute with the Great Ones, but rather the opposite. They would commute with the old ones, steal its blood, and give it to the people in hopes of evolving the human species. The beasts scourge was caused from the over consumption of the old blood, a failed attempt at evolution. The reason you fight the humans at the beginning of the game is because they are mad from their slow transformation into beasts. All those who partook in the old blood eventually turned into beasts, and those who over obsessed over insight were transformed into the more eldrich enemies you fight. Blood is the perverted understanding of of a god, insight is the true understanding of a god.

Something you miss from going straight to the lore, and part of the genius of the game, is that it’s a cosmic horror game disguised as a gothic horror game. When you are playing you are in the mindset of Victorian London fighting werewolves and then you start uncovering things that are strange and off, until you finally gain enough insight or the blood moon looms low and you come face to face with the eldritch truth. None of the original advertisements showed any of the more lovecraftian elements.

Okay Nux, you got some things wrong, but that's fine. Here's some things that should clear things up: 1: the whole game isn't set in a nightmare/dream realm, but most of it is set in "the waking world" or real world. There is the hunter's dream(basically where you upgrade and buy gear), the nightmare of mensis and Mergo's nightmare, which are the dream realms. 2: they're not using the old blood(the healing blood of the great ones) to summon great ones, but BECOME great ones. That's all I personally had, but if anyone else wants to add more context, feel free. Oh, and the great ones don't really want to take over/destroy reality, but they want to have a child. Yes, really. Every great one loses their child and yearns for a surrogate.

The thing almost no one talks about when talking lore is Echoes. They seem like a gameplay mechanic to level up and buy stuff, but like Souls in the Souls games they have a root in the story and lore of the game. Echoes of Blood are a source of power found withing blood, especially within the Old Blood. When the Church practiced Blood Healing what they effectively did is overcharge poor common folk with eldritch power, with the breaking point being the transformation into beasts. The Great Ones of Bloodborne are heavily implied to be ancient people who first discovered and mastered the Echoes of Blood, using both those and Insight to become the greatest of beasts and ascend. This would be why Kos (DLC material, you'll see), the most powerful Great One found in the story of Bloodborne, has multiple human features, such as hands a face, but also why they are compelled to have children with humans, probably a leftover instinct of their previous lives. The folly in Willem's plan is fearing that power, which is necessary to ascend, and the folly in Laurence's is trying to force a transformation into a Great One through power alone, without Insight to control it and ascend in mind as well. Both factions end up having a Great One on their side: Ebrietas for the Church of Laurence, attracted by the Echoes, and Rom the Vacuous Spider for Willem's Byrgenwerth, a student who manage to grow eyes within her brain, but severely lacks in power due to their fear of blood and the Echoes within. Overall, unlike in Lovecraft mythos, blood isn't used to bind the Great Ones to this plane of existence, but the large quantity of Echoes going around thanks to the Church attracted their attention anyway. The Great Ones are a lot less interested in the physical plane than the Outer Gods of Lovecraft, they just hang there, in the sliver of reality humans can't normally perceive, and periodically check on their old home when they feel a shift coming.
@acrab65274 ай бұрын
Nah Kos and the old ones want kids because they always lose their kids. Ants live for a year, have a billion kids. Elephants live for 100 years, have maybe 3 kids. Immortal beings are sterile, see also elves. The only way to get a kid is to adopt one and ascend them.
@leonnewkirk17134 ай бұрын
That's an interesting take. The echoes themselves are a factor everyone overlooks. Maybe that's the missing ingredient. Both Willem's and Laurence's methods are incomplete. One evolves one part of a being but leaves the other part behind. So it'd make sense for the great old ones to have been people once; they perfected the process and manage to do blood transformation and insight simultaneously. It would explain their interest in humans. Why would an other worldly, powerful being need a child for? Afterall, humans are social creatures.

For the love of god, please say "vore the lore" instead of "consume the lore". It sounds so much better and its more on brand for you.

The bloodborne lore runs so deep nux there is still lore for you to consume so you may line your brain with eyes, i reccomend smoughtown who has a few different videos diving into different sections & factions of the game its highly interesting. Lord nuxalore consumer of all lore, dive deeper into bloodborne.

Bloodborne is masterpiece , one of the few games that have atmospheric horror and creepiness instead of just random jumpscare

The sad part is the fact that the lore from the dlc isn’t included. Neither is the actual story from the game (minus the ending stuff).

Finally! Bloodborne lore react! Im sure so many of us have been waiting for this one! 😅 To state how much Bloodborne is special and beloved is an understatement.

another thing that nux didn't understand is that the game doesn't take place in lovecraft's dreamland, but in the real world, and you enter a couple of nightmares during the game, such as the hunter's dream
