Fun fact. Devil may cry already HAS an anime that takes place in the timeline between the events of two of the games (It’s actually what introduced me to DMC, and now I own all the games lol). So, The anime coming out is the SECOND anime to be produced about DMC.

1 AND 3-5. 2 is the only dud, and no one should play that, there is literally nothing in it to miss, but 1 is a wonderfully intense, atmospheric game with some really hard-hitting storytelling (when it eventually decides to do some storytelling, at least), it's honestly the best of the five in my opinion despite the severe jank.

The DMC lore is actually good. And unlike everything else in the series, it's subtle. You learn who a couple characters are by realizing they have the same combat moves as another guy, the game never tells you, just expects you to figure out that the muscle memory from boss A is kicking in for Boss W Also, thank god we're back to fictional lore and not real life sex criminal lore.

DMC having been haded off at one point and the difference In how media outside the games handles Dante has weirdly made him a bit more interesting in lore. Anytime we play him he's an unstoppable force of nature but in other stuff he's depressed and unmotivated because he doesn't really have to try as much and his family's dead. Kamiya the original director said Dante's scared when he fights so when we get to the big threats in the games it comes off as him playing a character to convince himself he can do it. The new anime and manga kind of go against the trend of outside media being a more depressed Dante. However the new manga is set around 5 and the new anime is young teenage Dante from around 3.
