So "contemporary" is combining mid-century minimalist with a bold 70s-inspired cubist aesthetic with hints of Art Deco. The exterior shapes and treatments are pleasing enough; they just have all the hallmarks of being a fad. I hope they aren't, but I've lived through many fads. And even if it does turn out a fad, not all fads are bad. It's funny, twenty-some years ago people looked at my furniture, mostly made up of mid-century pieces I inherited from my parents and some kitschy pieces I fancied and purchased (or picked off the curb) myself, and felt sorry for me, now they envy them. Someone a couple weeks ago offered me $3500 for one piece that I'm sure didn't cost my parents more than $40. I thought he was joking, then he thought I was joking when I told him no. Vintage me and my vintage furniture are like marriages used to be, together until death do us part. Maybe I'll outlive the current mid-century revival fad and after I die my furniture will be thrown to the curb! That would be a shame indeed, but it's a risk I am willing to take!
