Cutting down government wage bill means many factors.. Our government is not paying civil servants competitive salaries ha ke bua ka central government employees eg. lowest salary scale A3, ke madi fela a lehuma. Cutting wage bill has always been a vexing issue for us. There are only two pathways to deal with this problem; cut salaries, wages and allowances of civil servants and/or reduce the staff count. Cutting down the staff count will go against UDC’s promise to create 100k jobs in the next 5 yrs. So the only option for Bo-Boko is to cut salaries, wages and allowances.

Wage Bill will only work in part in my view. Civil servants from D1 and below are underpaid , im not sure if this can apply to them. On the contrary, everyone from E2 and above (remember there's no E4 and E3) is overpaid, the gap from D1 to E2 is dizzying for a small economy like ours, and these are the people who never get to spend their money on ordinay bills every working motswana spends on as they sit on a myriad of allowances and royalties that come with these posts, free transport, free meals on never ending meetings and conferences that they always perform, not to mention external travels that see them rake thousands in Pula on pedium. This is really costly for a small economy like ours jaaka le bona.

When it comes to people coming forward for elections to be nominated, the truth is, the focus is on the salaries and allowances. Few dont come as candidates to represent people. The truth is, if you nominated as a member of parliament, you know you will have to sit in parliament and why should one be paid for part of the job requirements. I think all these allowances dhould be dropped. The minimum wage in Botswana is so pathetic. The masses are the ones to be catered for. Its a new government and people voted for change. Whats the point of cartying in from the previous government? People are surviving on combos, which consists of mainly starchy products, fatty and full if sugar like mayonnaise. Many Batswana are headed for being diabetics because thats alk they can afford, rice or pasta with mayonnaise and tomato sause. Its pathetic. Companies are not paying the low income earners in time, sometimes they are not paid and yet, the landlords expect them to pay rent. Companies exploit these workers and before you know it, the companies are closed and when these workers get to labour, that will be the last you hear if it. Labour officials are incompetent, or they are bribed. The Ministry concerned should start investigating how much back log of files are there and fir how long and yet these are some of the government workers being paid allowances, allowances for what? Freeze all increaments for most of these government workers and improve the lowest income earners first. No payments for sitting in parliament because you know uf you are nominated, thats what you are expected to do and most of the time with no good results. Our children have suffered enough and that's why they came out in thousands to vote like never before. I am praying that this time every Motswana should realisehas a part to play for the betterment of our country instead if being quiet and just be grumpy. Some government departments not performing well should be exposed like Burs.
