In English, nouns are often accompanied by the word “the”. In Dutch, there are two words for “the”: “De” and “Het”. Most nouns are "de" nouns, but a few use “het”. The reasons why each word is “de” or “het” are somewhat arbitrary, so it’s best to use a list to memorize them.
