I have a slight feeling he ment a different gymnasium. In Germany the place to train is indeed called Gym or Fitness-Studio. But how he pronounced it, it sounds like the school form. Germany has basically three types of middle school after Elementary. Gymnasium is focused on higher linguistic, mathematic and science fields. So overall even if harry didnt know that - with the word chemistry, the Track had pretty much both meanings in it anyway. Thanks Cliff for your work!
