I was brought up in Lechlade and still have family there. I went to school there too. The town is old with many of the buildings going up in the Georgian era. The history goes back further than that of course.. way way back in history. Queen Katherine of Arogan, Henry VIII's first wife, whom he divorced held the manor of Lechlade at one point and her emblem, the pomegranite of Aragan, i believe, is in St. Lawrence's church. A Saxon burial ground was discovered on the outskirts of the town in the 1970s. and other archeological sites have gleaned much about the past. Lechlade had and has many pubs, some have shut down since I was a child. this was because its a market town and was a coaching staging post where horses would be changed on commercial coaches, and accomodation and meals available for travellers. Two of the Inns as far as I mnow were coaching inns. In addition, the wharf held cheese warehouses from the days of the canals moving goods and the pubs came in handy for that trade as well. I used to know a very old lady when I was a child who was a bargees daughter. Her face was as brown as old leather and she told me many old stories of being a child on a working canal boat.

our historic buildings can only be added to or made to look modern.. its the planning laws. this is so it clearlly shows what is old and what is new. Some listed buildings have to be repaired in classic fashion with the right methods and materials used historically. Non listed buildings do not need to do this but its not possible, as far as I understand it, to build say a back on a building which is 'pretending' to look old.. that is why there are modern buildings at the back.. its not weird. I once saw a tv programme about someone renovating an italian castle.. and they made it look old. there was no way of knowing what was old and what was a year old.. so that is the reason. The town has expanded down the years and that is why there are modern buildings and estates, I was brouhgt up in a house built in the 1930s and much modern housing happened from the 70s, the 80s 90s and for all I know more recently. It houses a lot of people who work further afield. It was a wonderful place to grow up in the sixties and seventies and not as busy as today. People who live there at any point always keep a fondness for the old place. We don't thin k there is anything WEIRD or FUNNY about any of it - it just shows how history has evolved.
@MinimalList3 жыл бұрын
I seem to remember the only thing I described as "weird" about Lechlade was the notion of a year-round Christmas shop -- which certainly still strikes me as an unusual idea -- but it's interesting to hear that the planning laws require the differentiation between old and new work ... certainly explains the combination of a seemingly ancient stone wall with a modern structure. Reminded me of the movie set towns I've been to over the years. M

I think it is there that they in the TV-series Amazing Designs built a floating house of concrete positioned in what could be described as a constantly filled "dry dock" on the bank of the river having four huge poles fixating the house for sideways moves and all connections "water, electricitity, gas and so on made of rubberhose to be able to move with tha house after the waterlevels in the river.

@@MinimalList Funding IS arriving in fits and spurts. Some of the canal, some of the bridges and locks are now done. Give it ten years maybe. The Sapperton Tunnel and the Ewen Viaduct (demolished) will be the hard part, plus persuading some landowners to hand back the land, but I have a feeling that a couple of marinas will be built, plus housing, to 'compensate'.

Probably the same contractor that built the tuppeny (two-penny) tube, as the Central line was colloquially known when it opened as the Central London Railway in 1900. Tuppence it cost, to travel from anywhere to anywhere else on the line. Now there's a coincidence :o))

@paulroberts56776 жыл бұрын
Enjoyed that, thank you. The Thames and Severn Canal is very unlikely to get to Stroud due to a tunnel, that needs to be refurbished, being run through Fuller's earth. However, the other side of the tunnel has got £26 million pounds of lotterymoney to take the canal from there to the Gloucester and Sharpness canal. There was going to be a deal with the water companies to refurbish the canal so that water could be transferred from the Severn to London, but these have fallen by the wayside. It is ever such a pity because London and Stroud would have been a great route to travel. Anyway, the Stroudwater and the Gloucester and Sharpness canal WILL be connected. It will please me no end as my flat is in Stroud and Mrs Mouse lives in Saul, where the Stroudwater joins the G&S. There are so many wonderful restorations in this area waiting to be done. The North Wiltshire and the Wiltshire and Berkshire for instance.

Glad you enjoyed Lechlade, we love it here although we are looking forward to next year when we will be ‘of no fixed abode ‘. We left here at the end of June and arrived back a couple of weeks before you got here. There are some lovely circular walks, they are all George-friendly. The History Board was produced by the Lechlade History Society and there are a few around, you should have seen one by the Roundhouse. Great video as always. Do you travel all year or moor up for the winter?

@MinimalList6 жыл бұрын
We do not have a Gold License. We considered one this year, but as we weren't going to head further east and hadn't planned on returning to London we didn't think it would be worth it... in the end for a standard width narrowboat the price of a Gold is more than the price of a regular license plus 1x31 day short term EA license... if we'd been doing more than 1 month on EA waters the Gold would be the better option. Careful Michael, you are almost beginning to pronounce the word " Cows" like an Englishman. It is so funny as I never here it here in Alberta except when I run across fellow Maritimers who pronounce "Cows" almost like it is spelt "Caews" or some sort.
