a very good French learning site.I particularly like the emphasis on pronunciation.The tips on slow speaking, pronunciation and practice are particularly good. French still drives me mad even after a year, some of the French word combinations are impossible to work out. Can I ever successfully translate English into French? thank you.

Thank you very much Rod. I have to admit that I love pronunciation and really enjoy teaching it. As for translation, it is possible. It just takes time. You have to understand that word-for-word translation doesn't always work. Learn phrases, not isolated words. Make the sentences you learn your own by changing part of them: for example, if one of my sentences was "je me couche tôt" (I go to bed early), but you're a night owl, look up how to say "late" in French (in a dictionary, not a translator!). Then, you'll be able to say "je me couche tard" (I go to bed late). You'll then have a grammatically correct sentence that you can memorise and use whenever you need it. Keep learning phrases and the translation will become easier and easier as you mentally replace the part you need. Writing helps with memorisation, but don't forget to revise your notes regularly.

@@LearnFrenchwithLexie Thanks Lexie.Will keep trying. Love France and French culture,(almost everything) remember I am English!! France is the closest country to me, so big incentive to learn French language/reading/watching films/ history etc. Additionally I love cooking and I want to be able to understand les 'carnets de Julie'. I love the cooking and the histoire, vraiment! I really do ,Sad or what??!!

There's nothing sad about that, Rod! I've always found that people who are interested in other cultures are great, maybe because I'm like that and we always end up liking people who are like us. Have you ever been to France? If you like history, you should check out this channel on KZbin: Secrets d'Histoire Officiel www.youtube.com/@SecretsdHistoireOfficiel

An important question How many words are enough for French b1 level?
@LearnFrenchwithLexie
@LearnFrenchwithLexie 10 ай бұрын
To be honest, I don't think that it's just a question of how many words. You could know 1000 of words but if you're not able to pronounce them properly or recognise them when people say them to you, you won't be able to reach a B1 level. Also, unless you need to pass a French test, I wouldn't really bother about A1/A2/B1... levels! What matters, to me, is being able to have conversations: make myself understood and being able to understand the person talking to me and for that you must focus on pronunciation and listening skills ;)
