When I studied in NZ my school prepared me for culture shock. What I found was a country that was truly loving and conscious. The only culture shock I felt was when I returned home. Love you NZ

Kia ora! Good morning New Zealand. I was watching this video and I started to cry because it is so beautiful, true, right, correct and how it has to be, how life should be and how we all have to think and value. I will be living in NZ one day. In this life or in the next one. But I will be there.

This is a beautiful way to "market" a destination by educating the world about the culture and its meaning. You've given people an insight into not just the landscape, but the connection between it and the people, as well as their life philsophy. That is the aspiration of People Are Culture! Kia ora from Boston!

The New Zealand surfer accent sounds like a chill and friendly version of the Australian accent. Damn, I wish that America was more like New Zealand sometimes, maybe I would already be fluent in my Native Inupiaq/Inuktitut tongue (also, no mass shootings anymore).

Correction: Hey guys ! I want some clarification here. I said this phrase - Kia kaha - to a Kiwi in Nam a year ago & I knew what it meant but the response from the guy was “never say that to me again”. Could anyone tell me is is wrong for a non-kiwi citizen to say it to a Kiwi or have I missed something ? I clarified it with another guy who said it’s perfectly fine and asked me who said that & I pointed out & I got a very strange vibe from the guy who said “never say that to me again”. Any clarification would be good to avoid future problems ...

the maori culture has been in my mums side of the family for literal generations, but i only just discovered that recently, and now i'm learning as much as i can about the maori culture. and all i gotta say is i absolutely love it. i love New Zealand and the maori people and the culture, and i love that it's my culture as well (also, kinda explains why i'm always trying to be so supportive and kind to everybody i meet. it's like my first instinct and seeing how most videos about the maori culture include people like that im gonna assume it contributes to why i'm that way)

Well then Kiwis , let your kia ora extend to our flora and fauna. It deserves the respect and protection that you would want to give to your immediate family and friends. Don't forget our fisheries either - they are still included in fauna.
@thisisoffbeat5 ай бұрын
It's wild that you would start the clip with two people mispronouncing the phrase.
@Amanda_AkinsulureАй бұрын
Maybe it's a way of showing inclusion. That all people are welcome. I come from a culture where everyone pronounces "R" that way.
@Amanda_AkinsulureАй бұрын
We aren't taught to roll our tongue or pronounce "R" with a "d" sound. As the brother in the video said, we "have a go".
@thisisoffbeat17 күн бұрын
@@Amanda_Akinsulure It's about respecting Te Reo by using the correct pronunciation. "having a go" is one thing, but showing a mispronunciation in a government funded video, is not cool.
@Amanda_Akinsulure17 күн бұрын
I am a white Australian, and we have people from so many different nationalities and cultures who have come to call Australia home. English is the dominant language here, and different people pronounce words differently. Do we get upset because the English language isn't being respected, or say that they can't appear in government funded videos etc? No... they are welcome and included.
@thisisoffbeat16 күн бұрын
@@Amanda_Akinsulure English is a dominant language, introduced through colonisation, often forced on communities, including here in Aotearoa New Zealand. Te Reo was marginalised, and even banned in schools for many generations, effectively robbing the indigenous people of this country of their language, and culture, as the two are so closely linked. Te Reo Māori has struggled to survive, and it deserves respect and honour. Somone new to this land who struggles to pronounce words correctly is one thing. But a Government funded video, opening on a mispronunciation is disrespectful and reinforces bad practices. As a white Australian, you should learn to understand your privilege.

how on earth can you have a New Zealand tourism ad buturing the pronounciation in the first scene
@subculturenz5 жыл бұрын
Much like how you can spell the word "Butchering" wrong... Prof Moon claims that constantly correcting people only serves to put them off trying and if we want Te Reo to survive, we have to lay off the pronunciation snobbery. "People get so dogmatic about it," he says. "'You must pronounce it this way, you must say it like that.' Those things serve to damage the language more than save it."
@mightymoaman24855 жыл бұрын
I have fat fingers and a small keyboard :( ... In most cases I would agree with your mentality, only this is the official channel of NZ tourism, not someone learning the language.
@subculturenz5 жыл бұрын
The people in the opening scene are tourists, the number of tourist using pronouncing it that was is pretty much 99% so I really don't see the problem here, unless you are going to teach them all about the rolling R. Most people will say it how it is spelt out in guide books.
@leeoleary33214 жыл бұрын
@@subculturenz I agree with you entirely. Lets bring Te Reo alive again, and not not be too down on people when they are learning. It is all about having the courage to start speaking
@sesescence Жыл бұрын
@@subculturenz Yeah, that's like when some police I rang when I was feeling threatened a couple of years ago didn't like the way I said Maori. I pronounced it the way that myself and my Maori friends said it when we were growing up together in Raglan, but he didn't like it, and actually put me down for my pronunciation, implying that I was a horrible person. I am far from it. The offending officer was a Maori officer. I would say that that officer is not only damaging his language, but also his culture... My opinion only. All I can say is, I was shocked.
