100 Tons of Coal Spilled on Track - Regulator to the Rescue

A hopper car opened it's doors and spilled over 100 tons of coal
on the track. With my ballast regulator we gonna shove it away from
the tracks today. Then Hulcher will come and clean up the big piles with
their grapple truck and after that bring their vacuum truck to get the fines.
Coal was taken back to the prep plant where it was ran back thru. There was
very little waste other than time and money for Hulcher to do the clean up.

In the first part of the video will provide a short discussion on why
these loaded hopper car doors are coming open when their is no air on them
that will include some visuals so you can see exactly what we are talking
about.
Hulcher was in here the day before with their grapple truck with a clam
bucket and had loaded this car. Backing down track the doors opened
up. The day this video was made, we took the locomotive up and
finished dumping the car on the track. I had to plow that coal away
from the track so Hulcher could get thru the spill and start the
clean up process once again.
These CYMX cars have been here since 1996. Most hopper cars on
most railroads get dumped once or twice a week. These cars get
dumped 6 times a day, 7 days a week, 363 days a year when we
are running good coal. They have a lot of wear on the moving door
parts.
We do not have a dedicated car repair crew here. We have 4 mechanics. 2
on day shift and 1 on afternoon and 1 on midnight. They are responsible
for everything at the harbor including all electric, the belts, feeders,
vehicles, water treatment plant, locomotives and a bunch of other stuff including
doing hopper car repair. There is just not enough man power or hours in the day to
get everything accomplished. These mechanics are swamped and do an
amazing job at trying to keep up with everything but again, not everything gets
done that could be done. But that's railroading.

Is there any preventative maintenance your hopper cars go through to identify worn latches or other problem parts that cause those hopper doors to fail and release ? Looks like a big mess when it happens. Thanks for another informative video.

Good question 47fireguy. Answer: we only have 4 mechanics here who have a plethora of other duties to perform besides rail car maintenance. They are responsible for everything at the harbor, including all belts, barge loading, all electrical, vehicle maintenance, water treatment plant plus a bunch more. Simply stated they don't have the time to do a routine car maintenance program like a big RR who has dedicated car repair men who that is all they do. We need a dedicated car repair crew to keep up with these cars for sure, but for now we don't have one. Our mechanics do the best they can with all the other stuff they have to deal with, but some things just don't get the proper maintenance such as rail cars that would help prevent some of these things from happening. With that said, it's certainly not that the company doesn't need and know they need more workers. Finding good workers to hire on is, believe it or not, a major challenge. It's sad because these are good paying jobs. The company is actively trying their best to fill numerous positions specially under ground where many workers are currently needed.

@@ccrx6700 With the complaints about the labor practices of the Class I roads, I'd think a bunch of mechanics would love to join your family at the mine. According to a 2022 article, the Big Six have lost 45,000 union workers in recent years, so it should be a buyer's market.

What a mess reminds me of the boiler plant we used to maintain everything was air operated the coal was pushed from the hopper into air pipes ,when an air pipe was leaking the amount of coal in the boiler house was phenomenal and it all had to be cleaned up,we used to be there all day and night.happy days😂😂😂 thanks for the ride Dave awesome vid.

The sight of that coal brings back memories from my childhood when we had a coal furnace. We got coal delivered in our driveway and had to load it into a wheelbarrow, take it around to the other side of the house and dump it thru a basement window into the "coal bin". My Dad could have had the driver use a conveyor to put it in the bin, but that doubled the price of coal, so we did it by hand.

Those were the days Rupert weren't they. A good many homes here growing up had coal and our school did too. I remember the big yellow dump truck that brought the coal with the coal chute and the driver's name was Ollie. Rolly polly guy with bib overalls and a train engineers hat. They're hoppers, not gons. Gondolas have no openings in the bottom, so they can only be unloaded with a rotary dumper. Cumberland Mine doesn't have one of those.

Likely they'd not be "gons" (gondolas) Pat, but rather hoppers, with much more depth, and thus capacity. Lower cube "gons" would take forever.

@@jacquesblaque7728 Huge amounts of coal is shipped in the US in gondolas. Typically, these are of the "bathtub" design, which look similar to a regular open hopper but without bottom doors -- it's the lack of bottom doors that make them gondolas, rather than hoppers. For example, if you look at any of the 150-car trains that UP or BNSF ship out of the Powder River Basin in Wyoming, it'll likely be composed entirely of gondolas. As I mentioned in my earlier comment, a gondola can only be unloaded with a rotary dumper (well, or with a shovel) so they aren't appropriate for Cumberland.

Great video Dave even though its a mess for you guys! I personally think that Trinity needs to explore a new design on those coal hoppers. Something that has a cradle that once they're closed to rest on steel shanks to ensure they won't open there's a problem with air pressure. Have the cradle design operated by hydraulic pistons. Air pressure 2. Safety latch 3. When doors shut the linkages "lock over" I put in the description about what all our mechanics do, please read that also. Nice clean up, Dave! They should have no trouble getting equipment in there to finish up. That seems to be happening more often lately. Might be time to retire, part out, and rebuild some of those hoppers or maybe pick up a few new ones. I know Iron Senergy is committed to the rail operation there but new hoppers probably aren't cheap.

This as a good explanation of how the latches work. Similar to the way some of our switch rails are locked by hydraulic rams. It is a shame the spill happened on what looks like fairly clean ballast but maybe that was better than it happening on a wet spot where the ballast and coal would be harder to separate at the prep plant. As always, good stuff. Getting to see the ins and out of railroading but I don't have to do any of the actual work! It will admit, as tough as the work is it would be fun to spend a week as an "intern" getting some hands-on experience. Watching those chunks of coal fly there at the end kind of reminds me of an old manure spreader out working the fields around here.

Excellent video. Ballast regulators are amazing "little" machines to watch (and, I'm sure, to operate). During the Long Island Rail Road's "Third Track Expansion" (2022), I had a great opportunity to watch (and record) -- on an almost daily basis -- Quality Track Equipment / Delta RR regulators (under contract) "groom" that third line, "from the ground up". Very cool seeing your coal project from the operator's perspective. 👍👏

Seeing this, I had the some of the lyrics from the Rod Stewart song Infatuation going through my head. The part that goes "Oh no, not again..." The ones we looked at Scotty are longer than our now hoppers, and yes they will fit in our unloader. We just went thru a 2 month shut down with zero revenue coming in and a ton of expenses going out so cars are on back burner for now. Will be about 7 videos coming out on our long shut down work here in a few weeks they will start being shown. Always a pleasure to have you visit with us my friend.

The coal just gets put back through the prep plant. Coal is contaminated by bits of rock when it comes out of the ground, so they already have equipment to deal with that.

I really enjoy seeing the MOW at work. I got to see a scorpion tail work train. I watched them lower the tail and load the equipment on. I couldn't stay until the raised the tail as my crew was the relief crew for the train to be moved to the next area of work to be performed. I used to drive railroad crews all over OH, and into KY, IN, and PA. I met a lot of great people. The stories of the railroad mishaps and ideocracy. Have heard many horror stories of crew mates who shouldn't be (most are not anymore) working on the railroad.

Yikes, what a mess! At least this one wasn't in a tunnel - or did that make that cleanup easer? Can't remember. Luckily you got things cleaned up enough for Hulcher to get in there with their vacuum, and there weren't any derailments 😊 I liked the latch info as well. It's always more interesting to know the details. That latching system really has a lot of moving parts!

Yes it is Mojo, but that's railroading.... :-) Nice thing about the tunnel the coal was clean, no ballast in it. This had to get ran back thru the prep plant to get the ballast cleaned out of it after they vacuumed it up. Thanks for taking the time to watch the video. Jack of all trades here Robert. I do everything from road master to section foreman to tamper operator, to track inspector to common laborer. That's railroading at Cumberland Mine RR. I even find myself at times cleaning the toilets and emptying the garbage cans. My dad said, variety is the spice of life and variety is what I have. Dave. I have always loved trains and your videos have ignited my curiosity to learn more. I am going to call you the Professor of Rail Road Maintenance! I’m watching this video and had to go down to our local short run operation in town. What’s on a siding next to the maintenance building? A Kershawn - looks very similar to what you were using to clear the coal. Directly ahead of it was a Kershaw tamping machine! Look! You art educating me! Thanks, Professor!

Your Regulator makes nice, neat windrows. I wish you could have shown that area after the Hulcher and vac truck came through. I really love to see the new ballast. It is like a.spread out white table cloth. I really look forward to your videos, Dave. I was wondering if a longer pin that the latch closed on would be.more substantial. Thank you for sharing. Oh boy what a mess! The diagram and walkaround of the latching mechanism was really interesting. That's again something I would never have gotten to see without your video! Going with your recent video, these car doors seem like a good place to spend some money. Even worse than dumping perfectly fine coal on the ground and the immediate cleanup is all the cost incurred from the dust messing up your track and needing work for new ballast. No idea what the track work costs but I'm sure it can get pretty spendy pretty quickly.

Hell of a thing a coal spill Dave and dealt with in a nice professional way. Have you considered getting your contractor to use a vacuum truck, if used correctly it cleans up really fast in front of the vehicle no need to spread out etc.

Hulcher came in after I regulated and picked up the big stuff with a grapple truck with a clam bucket Ian. Then they came back later with a vacuum truck and got the smaller fine material, almost no coal was wasted. It was then taken back to the prep plant and ran back thru to get out any ballast stones that might have been in it. Thank you for watching and hope you have a nice day my friend.

@@ccrx6700 Glad it was reprocessed. Can’t waste black gold. On a side note, the coal train in my Cumberland area that heads to West Virginia has a graffiti ghost 👻 on almost every coal porter. That’s some serious dedication! Lol! I call it The Ghost Train.
