So many of you are commenting on the different widths of tires. Please READ our story on the site to see the actual widths: speed.academy/100-tread-wear-track-tire-review-nankang-ar1-maxxis-rc1-toyo-r888r/ Trying to say one tire is wider than another without actually seeing them is what we like to call keyboard racing and no one like a keyboard racer!

I ran the AR-1 on my Mk7 Golf R last summer and loved them. They were, by far, the best tire I've run on track and couldn't be happier with how predictable and consistent they were. From a sweltering Canada Day at TMP to a perfect August lapping day at Mosport DDT, these tires performed flawlessly and could have done even better with a drivermod. I do agree with how good these tires are under braking and the performance per dollar beats out all the other tires tested. Thanks for the review!

ps4s is good all around but doesn't last that long, continental is slightly better in the wet and hankook v12 is not as grippy and is more popular for people who stretch tires as the sidewalls are more flexible. I have v12's and they are great for daily commutes. and they don't break the bank. Really depends on your needs, weather where you live and what you do with the car. V12's lasted me 10-15k miles of decent hard driving while my buddies PS4S lasted about 7-8k miles.

Good test. Thank you. Something to consider... The tire may not have been the only thing contributing to faster laps. If you did progress through the tires in that order (Toyo first, Nankang last), you may have been benefiting from the previous laps of practice. The Toyo may have had better relative performance, had it been tested last. Doing science!
@NiSE_Rafter
@NiSE_Rafter 5 жыл бұрын
This is their home track and they've both had a ton of experience driving that car so I don't think the order would have played that much of a factor in the outcome. Especially since they have the most experience running the Toyo's you would expect them to do best on them but that wasn't the case either so it shows how unbiased the results are.

Thoughts on the NT01's compared to these?
@speedacademy
@speedacademy 5 жыл бұрын
Same compound as the Toyo (or very similar, same parent company) but different tread pattern, tread depth and carcass design. We wouldn’t expect to see a big difference between the two, but some have found the NT01 to be faster. The strength of the R888R and NT01 are their longevity and predictability and forgiveness of abusive driving, plus they works great in the rain.

Much more confident that I can pull the trigger on those instead. I have 18x10's in the back and their biggest tire will stretch which I don't like, rather have a more squared tire in the back but the AR-1's have a 295/30 available.

serious question... why would you NOT drive with the slow in / fast out style? Smoother and faster
@Dogzero33
@Dogzero33 5 жыл бұрын
it depends on the car setup and the track youre driving at. so if the track is twisty has has lots of chicanes and directional changes you want a neutral handling car that allows for you to take corners more confidently and allowing for less midturn understeer. Although if there are a lot of straight aways, or higher speed corners you generally want a car that takes the slow in fast out approach for better traction and exit speed.
@TheChannel1978
@TheChannel1978 5 жыл бұрын
low hp cars benefit from a wider radius generally as the engines doesn't have the power to regain lost speed on the straightaway as quickly. High hp cars benefit from a tighter arc as this maximizes breaking into the corner and accellerating out of the corner especially when the car is so powerful it can't put it to the ground if there is steering lock on. That's why you see guys in Hondas drive with momentum, gradual turn, ease out and people in turbo-charged 4wds with more pronounced brake, hard turn & hard accel. 4wds also understeer under power often, which is another reason to take tigher lines in it. So slow in /fast out is a good starting point, but depends on car also on the layout ahead.
@Dogzero33
@Dogzero33 5 жыл бұрын
@@TheChannel1978 very true, and i think one of the more advanced ways of driving once youve mastered that idea and understand it, is trail baking so as to make your slow in stage meld with your braking so you're doing two things at once and eliminating constant movement.
@HydeMyJekyll
@HydeMyJekyll 5 жыл бұрын
@@TheChannel1978 Nice, an actual response that I may have learned something from! I've only ever driven slower cars, and mostly FWD. Current car is a bone stock 1992 Honda Civic VX hatchback with maybe 95 hp and quite tall gearing. Nobody ever intended for this car to be quick, but it can be quicker than most in the mountains/canyons. Definitely have to conserve momentum, but thankfully it handles well enough to carry a lot of it through the curves. Even when I did track days on my motorcycle, I still took the slow in/fast out approach and did quite well. Was much more stable to be on the throttle the whole time, accelerating through the whole turn. I did brake super late though compared to most other people, maybe because I learned to ride on some gnarly mountain roads.

@OIF/OEF-0341 No on the daily. Usually people who have dual purpose cars go street tires or run separate sets of wheel/tire combo. Most of my friends run as dedicated track cars :) hope that helped. When my track car was still street car i ran multiple tire set up. And NT01 was by far the best out of RE71R, R888r, Hankook RS3 and RS4 Let me know if i can answer any other questions as well.

I must say i'm just more than happy with my AR-1 . I had the NS-2R ( not real semi-slicks ) on my FWD Megane RS. The NS-2R are more of a UHP street tire, but boy... those AR-1 ... I did some tests on a right hair-pin corner (very similar weather conditions, same driver, same car, same entry speed ) which has a much lateral G demand, and the difference based on the built-in car G-meter is: NS-2R : 0,5-0,7 G, and AR-1 easily, 1.0 G ... We talk about corner speed 60-70 km/h. The price of the AR-1 is 800 euro all in, here in Europe for 235/40 R18 XL .. Hope this helps for guys looking to buy a new set of semi-slicks... cheers

Informative video, in addition in to fastest lap - it would be great to see 5-6 laps, time discrepancies and patterns ie. which how do the tires respond to numerous laps, consistency vs outright speed, early vs late, etc

I wish they made the AR-1 in some larger section width sizes (i.e, 305, 315, 325) for a 19 in. Rim. I was excited to try them until I saw the lack of size choices.

Really good data, thank you. Would have been good to see the Federal RSRR and Yokohama A050 in there to compare them to a really cheap and really expensive semi. I run the AR1 and I drive like DP and throw the car in hard. They are quite popular in Australia. Good news is they get better when they are half shagged and last forever. I'm 50 laps in on mine and they are half tread. That's on a 180hp FWD

Are these types of tires more appropriate for track days vs. a 200 treadwear like the RE71-R? I know the RE71-R is great for autocross since they warm up fast but what about Time attack and lapping days? Maybe just do a video about what tire for what type of event.
@RotorJunkie
@RotorJunkie 5 жыл бұрын
RE71Rs aren't the best for open lapping track days necessarily. The heat up very quickly and have amazing grip but they tend to overheat in a open lapping situation where you're running for 30 minutes at a time. I have a video of me running them on a track day on my channel if you feel like checking it out.

Based on the footage and the fact that he started with r888, it seems like over the course of the day his driving was just getting more and more precise…he was pushing the front alot with the first two tires and he kept mentioning how he needed to dial down his entry…makes me think there would be less of a gap with r888 if he did it last. I feel like he’d need to go back to the r888 again to confirm the results because most people will get faster with more and more practice.

It'd be too cool if a normal person could pick 3 tires of their choice to give real test drives on their own car before spending the cash. I'd spend a couple hundred dollars extra for the experience. Great video. I'd be interested in a street tire comparison in the same format. Well done.

I've owned and weighed all three of those wheels in that exact 18x9.5 size on my cars. The ce28 (ar1) being the lightest at 17 lb 10 oz. The GT (rc1) being a pound heavier at 18 lbs 11 oz. And the 57xtreme (r888r) at 21 lbs 5 oz. It's interesting to see how those weights just so happen to correlate with the produced lap times. I wonder if weight of the wheel started to play a big role on how these tires performed based on your braking data?

The RE71r is technically a 200tw tire but it wears as fast, and grips as well as a 100tw tire when cold. They offer great grip right off the line at autox events, but don't hold up as well as a true 100tw tire once warmed up.
