About 50 years ago an old bloke used to walk about here clearing sticks and stuff out of drains running under the roads. Though appearing to do very little I’d be curious if he was the cost effective option when you see what damage a few branches can cause. Thanks for the vids, always interesting.

I noticed a guy doing similar work around the outer-city main roads here in Chiang Mai a few weeks ago during the early part of the Rainy Season. Despite the large pools of water stretching out onto the road, he knew exactly where the drainage point was, and pulled out all sorts of junk with his bare hands ✋ 😳 Very important service to the Community, that.

That would help, I guess, but a truly cost effective measure would be to avoid bottle-necks. That is to raise *significantly* capacity and cross section of those drains. If this was a really fifty to hundred years event, than accepting to rebuild it that often is totally fine. But I have a feeling, that we get "hundred years" weather events every few years now :-D

That idea of yours to have the water fall expel all of its energy before entering the culvert is a brilliant idea. So just make sure that there are some very immovable rocks that won’t get dislodged. We had 100mm in one day in Gippsland Victoria and I thought that was insane. But we’re on top of the Strezleki mountain range so not much chance being flooded out. I wish I was there to give you a hand. Good luck Marty! 👍🇦🇺

As a engineer I used to design erosion protection at culvert inlet/outlet. This means boulders water will not move so easily. At several of yours culvert there is way to small fractions. Also vegetation is useful to give the dirt something to hold on to. You could also have a smaller culvert on the normal water line, then a bigger at a higher water line, that would help a lot in the future

Hi Marty. I've found my culverts are much less likely to block when the entrance is concreted in to cover sharp protruding end of the pipe. Having a slight radius at the entrance to remove the sharp edges works even better. Leaves and debris will tend to flow through the culvert instead of catching on the entrance, and sticks longer than the culvert diameter usually flow straight through. Concreting in the entrance also fixes up any broken concrete from digger bucket strikes. Hope this helps for future floods. Cheers, Neale.

First of all, I'm glad that you and your family are safe and healthy after all of that. 🙏 Looks like it was a bit scary. I really want to say that you are an absolute treasure, Marty. You are the epitome of what a good neighbor, father, husband, and friend should be. You have shown time and time again that you're willing to immediately step up and help friends, neighbors, family, etc, without ever being asked. You're constantly willing to help and put your own money into fixing issues and making things better and safer, a good example being the road and your driveway. Also, when you helped your friend set up his water turbine... You have some real talent and skills when it comes to machinery and fixing things and engineering stuff. It's a big reason why I subscribed to your channel quite a while ago. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I wish that you were my neighbor or friend because anyone who knows you is incredibly lucky to have you in their life in some way. I know you're not posting the videos to look for praise or anything, but you deserve it. Thank you for taking the time to videotape all of this, so that you can show the world the horrible situation that parts of New Zealand is dealing with right now. You should consider possibly creating a GoFundMe or whatever fundraiser site you prefer, so that people can help cover costs for all the repairs and anything left over could be donated to the relief fund or helping families out during their time of need due to the flooding and landslides. Just a thought. Stay safe over there! Sending lots of love and support from over here in Washington State, USA. 🙏❤️

Here in the mountains. We get much the same. The crews put giant welded grates on a angle made from old railway tracks. This stops the drains from branches etc. Maybe you could make something like that. To keep the trash from jamming up the drain pipes there. Maybe old chain link fence. I'm sure you engineering skills will come up with a plan.

on the steep edges for your 4 wheel drive entry et i think it would be worth hammering in some supports. if you buy scrap rail line, you should be able to drive them in just below the road at 30' off vertical heading into the hill. spacing will be very defendant on the size of rocks under foot etc but they should resist the landslide risk. you could also put some logs between them to help hold the edge together. if you can borrow a hammer attachment and sharpen the end they will go in pretty easy. i would also put some vertical between waterfall and the straight shot culvert to make a rock wall to dissipate water speed.

Marty I think you should over spec the culvert pipe (Double it) and where the intake is going back up a bit and design a cage (Weld it together with reinforcing steel rod etc) that captures/filters debris and thus allows sufficient water to pass until you can clear the effective filter. The cage if it roughly has 16x the surface area of the intake should give you 16x more time before it clogs.

Maybe also use culverts made of concrete with a smooth bore, narrow at the bottom and big and wide higher up. The narrow section keeps the flow speed up (to keep it from clogging up) when there is little water flowing through, the wider round section would be for excessive flow.

@@wideyxyz2271 1 year time to build a few cages is a plenty of time and time to collect scrap tubing to use for it to weld. The only real solution I can think of is to dig a river through instead, reinforce it so water wont dig it deeper, then build a cheap wooden bridge over it. Super rain seasons like this is only gonna become more common in the future as we see monster clouds carrying more fresh water than the entire world floating around the Pacific, and when they hit an area and rain, they hit hard, we seen this in Japan, Korea, China and even west coast of america.

Well, that front loader couldn't have come at a better time! Given the shape the planet is in and that you have had a once in 50 and once in 100 year flood within 6 months, rebuilding the damaged road with as large a culvert as you can possibly find may be a prudent way forward. Easier said than done of course and a bridge even might be better, but then cost and difficulty in building comes into play. I'm sorry that you have go through the process of rebuilding so soon again, but so long as you are safe, that is the most important.

That's what we get for employing selfanointed "scientists". If pollution in China hadn't melted the glaciers it wouldnt have been this bad, China is pretty much just one big sandpit so instead of pollution from their excessive industries getting absorbed there, it all goes to the Himalayan glaciers, ice melts, oceans rise, more rainfall, boom. It's literally the same as road-dust melting snow close to the roads before anywhere else, or throwing ash on snow around your yard in the spring, darker snow absorbs more sun and melts faster. If we had spread out our industries instead (as in, keeping it as it was) our fauna's environments could have more than handled the stress, and the Himalaya glaciers wouldn't have been so heavily taxed. We sacrificed 95% of our industrial capacities because our pollution laws are that much more stringent that our industries can't afford to keep up every year. So it all gets sourced out to China, because scientists "believe" instead of knowing for 100% fact.

Thank god you had the foresight (Or desire to scavange old equipment- my wife calls it hoarding) to salvage old the shovel and bulldozer and fix them up ..way before this flood. Can't imagine trying to do that with just the old Brownie. Thanks again for taking the time to film it.. stay safe please.

Oh Marty what a massive cleanup op, all the best, so good to see all your hard work on those beautiful motors paying, every bucket I was imagining what it would like with a small machine or god forbid shovelling by hand. Take care

Hey Marty, you probably have already thought of it, but fabricating a heavy metal grate out in front of up hill side/inlet side, of the problem culverts, will help a lot, and be easier for you to clear with your excavator.., also a hasty fabricated fixed “thumb” on your excavator will be a great help. Take care.

Hope you and your fallas holding up in Nelson. Hey, I just been to Scott Brown's channel, he's a kiwi carpenter whom I subscribed to for a while now, he also lives in Nelson and he had a link to Nelson Council's relief fund so I donated some money there. Dumb dumb like me just wouldn't have realised that there's a way to help those people until I saw something clear as, for example, a link. It didn't occur to me till I saw it, "ah yeah that's right I can donate." So I'm not suggesting anything but if you got a link I'm sure many people who watch your channel can help Nelson.

Your video brought back memories of 1977 when I lived in Johnstown, PA USA, we got 8 inches approx 20 cm of rain in 8 hours. The devastation was similar. I can't imagine what a meter of rain would have caused in Johnstown. Best wishes to you and your neighbors during the cleanup. Be safe.
