Great work. One step I would add, Before applying bondo, Apply wood petrifier, I was a Contractor in Seattle for over 20 years, its a great wood preserver and makes old, soft wood hard, also prevents future rot. Thanks for posting the video. Maybe Customers will start to understand how much actual work goes into these projects.

Very nice craftsmanship! And you didn’t ask for my opinion, but a cranky old carpenter taught me years ago the reason these old doors last as long as they do relies on drainage of the stile-to-rail connection; any moisture that gets into the joints between bottom rail, stiles and panels (and it will) drains out if the stiles (vertical members) run past the ends of the rails (horizontal members)... if the rails run past the ends of the stiles the drainage path is blocked, water can’t get out, rots the rail, stiles, panels faster than before... same with windows. That said, please keep the videos coming! Thx

I think most anyone with half an appreciation for how the original door was constructed could have done a better job. The tenon should have been blind. No screws, NO BONDO, and the replacement wood and veneers should have been quarter sawn. It could have been done right for the same amount of money and a little more time. This is a goombah job that wouldn’t weather well after that latex paint fails.

Polyester filler is not a good choice. It is hygroscopic. Should have used epoxy. The bottom of an exterior door is subject to a lot of weather exposure, as evidenced by the damage that needed to be repaired, so you should have used vertical grain veneer glued and coated with epoxy for maximum durability. Would have only cost $50 more.

You guys do good work. So many comments, here, about what you should’ve done. I think minimizing repair work on painted antiques is good, because you don’t know what condition the wood is under the paint, so sometimes out-of-site-out-of-mind is a wise thing. Also, not sanding it down completely preserves the amount of original wood still left in the door for the next repair “100 years” from now.

UK health and safety would have a field day in this workshop, no riving knife on the bench saw and so much more. The end product looks fine, but laminating this way leaves end grain exposed on the sides, there is a reason doors are constructed in the way they are as it allows for unequal expansion and contraction, as soon as heat or moisture get to that bottom lamination it will expand across the width of the door and lock it into the jamb. This is a cosmetic repair rather than a restoration, there's a big difference in the two.

I agree completely! Some things look good from a distance but don’t go too close. This looks like a botch repair and quick fix. That softwood will need replacing in 12 months unless it was accoya. Just tubing in mastic round the beads made my blood boil. Do it properly or don’t do it at all... a decent company will have to go back and put this right

This is great. Thanks so much for making this video. I really needed to see the part starting at 7:00 ish about repairing the bottom of the door.....I had been wanting to get doors put back into the opening on our first floor between the front room and the dining room and just in the last few days realized the pair of doors were still in the house but had been redeployed by previous owners each to single openings elsewhere and one had been trimmed top and sides to fit one of the openings. I'm really hoping to be able to fix it and bring the pair back together to their original location. At least this is some inspiration!

I watch and watch and the main thing that makes me wonder is where is the threshold in this door? What happens when it rains on the street? Does water flow directly into the apartment? That is why these doors are damaged because water "attacks" them from bottom I would add a threshold and install seals around the door. This will mute the noise from street. Additionally: At 13:02 we can see where the elements are connected. This is unacceptable. Bunglers.

Why so many people are obsessed about old stuff is beyond me. If this was my door and it broke? I would have sold in on ebay to someone who would pay WAY too much for it.
